Deciding between an innerspring mattress and an all-foam mattress? The WinkBed and Puffy are great options! Find out which is the best one for you in this comparison review by Mattress Nerd. Make sure to check out what others are saying in our testing methodology.
The WinkBed is an innerspring mattress with a foam pillow top. The Puffy is a relatively simple all-foam mattress with gel-infused comfort layers.
WinkBed is best for… | Puffy is best for… |
Hot sleepers | Lightweight and average-weight side sleepers |
Combination sleepers | Couples |
Back sleepers | Back sleepers |
Firmness and feel can make or break a mattress so it’s important to consider it, read on to know more.
The WinkBed and Puffy mattresses are both medium-firm. They provide a good balance of support and cushioning comfort. The Puffy feels denser when you press into the mattress, while the WinkBed feels more springy.
The softer WinkBed is best for side sleepers who need their shoulders and hips to sink in more to maintain their alignment and prevent pain in those pressure points. The Puffy has a soft and supportive feel rather than feeling “stuck” in the mattress, it also has a balanced yet responsive foam feel, meaning it’s a good choice for combination sleepers who move around at night.
The springy feel and breathable construction of the WinkBed are best suited to back sleepers, hot sleepers, and combination sleepers. The Puffy is a relatively simple all-foam mattress with gel-infused comfort layers. It’s a better choice for side sleepers and couples concerned with motion transfer.
WinkBed Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 4 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 4 | 4 | 3 |
Puffy Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 4 | 3 | 5 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 3 | 3 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 2 | 2 | 3 |
If you’re an average-weight back sleeper, you’ll probably prefer the luxury-firm or firmer WinkBed. If you’re an average-weight stomach sleeper, you’ll probably prefer the firmer or plus WinkBed. In the same way, average-weight side sleepers will appreciate the softer WinkBed that relieves pressure. Average-weight side sleepers will find the medium-firm Puffy to provide pressure relief and a gentle hug around the hips and shoulders. The upper layers of the Puffy will cradle pressure points and conform around the natural curves of the body.
Heavyweight side sleepers might need a little extra firmness to prevent sinking too deep, so the luxury-firm WinkBed is a good option. If you’re a heavyweight stomach sleeper, back sleeper, or combination sleeper, the Puffy mattress will likely not be firm enough and cannot provide enough support.
Lightweight back sleepers will probably be most comfortable on the luxury firm or firmer WinkBed. And if you’re a lightweight side sleeper, the Puffy should be a good fit for you thanks to the foam layers that provide pressure relief and a gentle hug around their hips and shoulders.
The WinkBed is a hybrid mattress, meaning that it is constructed with both coils and foam and measures a total of 13.5”. Meanwhile, the Puffy is an all-foam mattress with three layers dedicated to providing superior pressure relief and a “cloud-like” sleeping experience, it is slightly thinner compared to the WinkBed with only 10” in height.
WinkBed Mattress Materials | Puffy Mattress Materials |
TENCEL fabric | Cooling Cloud foam |
Euro pillow top | Climate Comfort foam |
Pocketed coils and Extra-Edge Support System | Climate Comfort foam |
13.5” | 10” |
The exterior of the WinkBed is made of TENCEL, which is a performance fabric made from eucalyptus wood fiber designed to keep you cool and dry as you sleep by absorbing moisture. The Puffy’s cover consists of standard polyester that has some stretch across the surface, a thinner cover that feels cool to the touch.
The WinkBed has a quilted pillow top which makes the WinkBed cushioning and supportive. The top layer of the Puffy is made of two inches of Cooling Cloud foam with gel infusions that are meant to pull heat away from your body and promote airflow, so you don’t get too hot.
The WinkBed’s support layer utilizes a coil system which helps to promote airflow in the mattress, which is one of the benefits of a hybrid mattress compared to traditional memory foam mattresses. The Puffy is designed with six inches of Firm Core foam support layer, which adds structure and durability to the mattress.

The WinkBed is a solid mid-range hybrid mattress. With some great features like temperature regulation, strong edge support, and responsive materials. Having a variety of firmnesses to choose from, the WinkBed will work well for a wide variety of sleepers.
The Original Puffy is a three-layer foam mattress made with cooling gel-infused memory foam and motion-isolating base foams. It has a medium-firm feel that blends contouring support with cushioning comfort.
The WinkBed mattress incorporates both a breathable construction and temperature-regulating features like gel-infused foam. The coil base layer enables lots of airflow, and the foam pillow top is infused with cooling gel. Puffy aims to keep their mattress cool by adding gel to both the first and second foam layers. Still, our team thinks the WinkBed is the cooler option. If you are a hot sleeper, check out our picks for the best cooling mattresses.
In this comparison, the Puffy reduces motion transfer the best, which makes it a better choice for couples or light sleepers who share their bed.
We didn’t feel like we’d roll off either mattress, but we felt especially well supported on the WinkBed, probably thanks to heavy-duty coils around the perimeter of the mattress.
Even though both of these mattresses are medium to medium firm, the top layers of the Puffy allow for a little more sinkage, which is better for side sleepers.
The firmer WinkBed options are great for those with back pain, especially lower back pain since they keep your hips lifted in alignment with your shoulders. The Puffy mattress is a lot like sleeping on a cloud; however, some sleepers may want more firmness and less fluffiness. For better options, see the best mattresses for back pain.
The Puffy is the more durable option, but mattress durability also depends on the frequency of use. Additionally, both mattresses are protected by Lifetime warranties, both of which protect against various manufacturing defects that can crop up with age.
The WinkBed brand ships its mattresses for free and offers white glove delivery for $149. Your 120-night trial period begins on the day your new mattress is delivered. As long as you’re the original owner of the mattress, you’re protected by WinkBed’s Lifetime warranty.
The Puffy brand offers free shipping of its bed-in-a-box mattresses in the contiguous U.S., but they don’t offer white glove delivery. They give you a 101-night sleep trial to test out their mattress, plus free returns and a full refund after 14 days. After the trial period ends, Puffy’s Lifetime warranty begins and extends through the entire period of original ownership.

Overall, we’d recommend either bed to back sleepers, but only the WinkBed to hot sleepers and combination sleepers. On the flip side, we’d only recommend the Puffy to couples and side sleepers (unless you consider the Softer version of the WinkBed mattress). Neither mattress is ideal for stomach sleepers, but the Firmer WinkBed could be a good fit. If budget is important, remember that the WinkBed is a luxury mattress, so you’ll pay less for the Puffy.
WinkBeds mattresses are handmade to order in the USA. WinkBeds has two factories, one in Watertown, Wisconsin, and another in Orlando, Florida. All their materials are American-sourced, and WinkBeds uses CertiPUR-US certified foams in all their mattresses to ensure that their products are high-quality.
No. But if you wish, you can use a box spring with WinkBed mattresses. WinkBed sells their Adjustable WinkBase 2.0, platform foundation, and heavy-duty bed frame that are designed to support the WinkBed mattresses, but any sturdy bed frame or box spring should work well with your WinkBed.
The Puffy is a single-sided mattress, so it doesn’t need to be flipped top-to-bottom. However, to ensure your mattress wears evenly, rotate it head-to-foot once a month for the first few months and then once every season (every three or four months) for the rest of the mattress’s lifespan.
