Sleep Number beds are built with firmness adjustability in mind. Each bed has 20 firmness level options, called Sleep Numbers. Sleep Numbers range from 0 to 100, with the higher numbers being firmer. You can easily change the Sleep Number using either a remote control or the SleepIQ app, which adjusts the amount of air in the bed’s air chambers to create a firmness level suited to your preferences.
Despite the fact that you can change the firmness of this mattress, the feel of this adjustable is always going to be on the plush side because of the bed’s six inch comfort layers. These plush foam layers incorporate Sleep Number’s softest foam to create a lush cushioning, memory foam feel.
Body Type: | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers |
Lightweight< 130 lbs: | 4 | 5 | 5 |
Average-weight130–230 lbs: | 4 | 5 | 5 |
Heavyweight> 230 lbs: | 3 | 4 | 4 |
1 = Very poor 2 = Not good 3 = Fair 4 = Good 5 = Excellent
A mattress that is on the firmer side is usually a safe pick for back sleepers. The firmer mattress surface helps keep the spine propped up–if it sinks too far into the bed, it can cause the back to shift into an unhealthy posture that can result in morning aches and pains.
Although you can inflate this air mattress to give you an ideal amount of support for your body type, the super soft feel of this bed may be a bit uncomfortable for heavyweight sleepers, who may sink too deep into the bed for comfort. Average-weight and lightweight back sleepers, however, may find this bed comfortable as long as they prefer a contouring, memory foam feel.
The best mattresses for side sleepers typically have a balance of contouring pressure relief and support. This mattress’s plush foam layers provide plenty of cushion for the hips and shoulders as they press into the bed, while the adjustable air chambers allow you to pick the ideal firmness level to provide support you need to keep your spine in a neutral, healthy posture throughout the night.
This bed’s plush foam and versatile firmness options make it an ideal pick for lightweight and average-weight, and heavyweight side sleepers alike.
When shopping for a mattress for stomach sleepers, you should look for a bed that provides enough support to keep the core propped up instead of dipping too far into the bed, but also has some light cushioning to pad the shoulders and chest as they press into the bed. This bed’s six inch comfort layer has an ideal amount of cushioning for lightweight and average-weight sleepers, but heavyweight sleepers may sink a little too deep into the bed for comfort.
The squishy soft foam in this bed may make it more difficult for average-weight and heavyweight sleepers to move on the surface of the bed as they change sleep positions throughout the night.
Lightweight sleepers may not have this issue. Regardless of body type, the iLE mattress’s automatic adjustability feature will keep you at your ideal sleep number throughout the night as it will adapt to your movements and new position.

The Sleep Number iLE mattress is set apart from the rest of the innovation series mattresses because it is built with Climatemp foam, which is designed to be temperature balancing and extra breathable. The bed’s air chambers also help facilitate airflow to move body heat away from the surface of the bed to keep you sleeping cool all night long. For more, see our picks for the best cooling mattresses.
Sleep Number beds are built with foam side and edge walls to provide reinforced support to the sides of the bed. This feature will keep you from slipping off the edge, whether you like to sprawl as you sleep or occasionally perch on the side of the bed to tie your shoes. Looking for more info? Check out our edge support page.
The Sleep tracking technology built into this smart bed monitors your sleep position and automatically responds as you move around to ensure that your side of the bed stays at your chosen sleep number throughout the night.
Bed reviews say that it takes a few minutes for the bed to adjust, the inflating and deflating of the air chambers is fairly quiet and won’t wake you up.
Since the sizes of this bed designed for two people (Full size or larger) are designed with dual air chambers, each side of the bed has a separate air chamber. This means great motion isolation: your movements stay on your side of the mattress and won’t disturb your partner—a useful feature for those who toss and turn.
As the bed adjusts throughout the night—whether you tapped a button on the remote control or because it is automatically adjusting to your movements—it makes a soft humming noise. Although the noise is muffled by the thick layers of foam, it may irritate extremely light sleepers.
The iLE mattress is built with a six inch comfort layer that has five-zoned pressure relief. Foam doesn’t just cradle your pressure points—it also helps redistribute your weight evenly along the length of the bed to relieve point and back pain.
Although you can adjust this mattress’s firmness level to create a sturdy surface for your adult activities, some may find it difficult to move around, since you’ll tend to gently sink into this plush bed. Check out our best mattresses for couples for more options.
Since this mattress is made with layers of foam, you may experience slight off-gassing when your new bed first arrives. This means that you’ll smell a faint odor, but this smell is harmless and will dissipate within a few hours or days.
Sleep Number beds are designed to last. The iLE is backed up by a 15-year limited warranty, but some bed reviews note that components of the Sleep Number bed may break down after a few years and these aren’t always fully covered by the warranty.
This bed’s blend of ultra-soft foam and supportive air chambers makes for a cozy sleep experience for those who prefer the feel of a plush bed.
Polyester/polypropylene mattress cover: The iLE bed comes wrapped in a breathable cover that is designed to wick away sweat and keep you cool.
3” quilting foam layer: This duvet-style pillow topper is so fluffy that it gives you the feeling that you are sleeping in a cloud.
3” exclusive foam layer: This foam layer is what sets the iLE apart from the other Sleep Number beds. It is designed to be ultra breathable and cooling so you can benefit from cozy foam layers without waking up sweaty.
Air chambers: Depending on the size of the bed, your iLE mattress will have either one or two air chambers. Hoses connect these chambers to a pump that inflate or deflate them to adjust to your chosen Sleep Number firmness level.
2“ base pad: This dense foam pad cushions the air chambers and increases the overall durability of the bed.

The Sleep Number 360 iLE mattress comes with a 15-year warranty. During the first year, after the purchase of your new mattress, Sleep Number will cover all the cost of repairs. After that, the cost of repairs is prorated with your cost of repairs increasing each year. You’ll need to make sure to keep your receipt, use an appropriate, Sleep Number-approved foundation to keep your warranty valid.
Your Sleep Number bed comes with a 100-night sleep trial period, where you can sleep on the bed in the comfort of your own home and return it if you decide it doesn’t work for you. Sleep Number iLE Mattress Is Best For… | Sleep Number i8 Mattress Is Best For… |
Shoppers who want a unique bed | Those who want an easy shopping experience |
Those who live in warmer climates | Side sleepers |
Sleepers who like a softer feel | Sleepers who want more zoned support |
The Sleep Number iLE and the Sleep Number i8 mattresses are similar models from Sleep Number’s Innovation 360 smart bed series–but these beds have some key differences. Although they both are built with a 6 inch comfort layer, the foam in each of these beds provides a unique sleeping experience. The iLE is built with temperature-regulating, ultra-breathable foam that is softer to the touch, making this bed a better pick for those who tend to sleep hot or like a more plush feel.
The i8 bed, on the other hand, has a comfort layer with 7-zone support to cradle sensitive areas such as the head, shoulders, lower back, hips, knees, lower legs, and feet. The iLE’s comfort layer is also supportive, but is only zoned to 5 areas of the body. This bed also provides a balance of support and contouring comfort that is ideal for the average side sleeper. Also, if you want to see your bed in store, there’s no guarantee that the iLE will be in stock. The i8, however, is one of the brand’s most popular beds and is a typical fixture at Sleep Number stores.

Sleep Number iLE Mattress Is Best For… | Sleep Number i10 Mattress Is Best For… |
Those who want an exclusive mattress | Heavyweight sleepers |
Those who want an ultimate plush sleep surface | Combination sleepers |
Hot sleepers | Those who want to see a bed at a Sleep Number store before purchasing |
The i10 and the iLE are both the top-of-the-line models in the Sleep Number Innovation series. If you’re looking for plush comfort balanced with support, the i10 is a great pick with 7 inches of comfort foam layers, compared to the iLE mattress’s 6-inches. The foam in the i10 is a bit more supportive and substantial, making it better suited for heavyweight sleepers. This foam also responds quickly to movements, making it a great pick for combination sleepers.
The foam in the iLE mattress is designed to be super soft, giving it a more fluffy feel than the i10 bed. This foam is also more breathable, which adds extra temperature regulation to an already-cool airbed. Also, the i10 is a staple in Sleep Number stores, but the iLE is a limited edition bed, making it harder to find and more exclusive.

Sleep Number iLE Mattress Is Best For… | Sleep Number c2 Mattress Is Best For… |
Luxury shoppers | Shoppers on a budget |
Side sleepers | Back sleepers |
Average and heavyweight sleepers | Lightweight sleepers |
The c2 mattress is Sleep Number’s base air bed model from the company’s Classic series of beds. The Classic series models provide sleepers with Sleep Number adjustability and SleepIQ technology, but come without the bells and whistles that drive up the price point for many Sleep Number mattresses.
The c2 mattress also differs from the iLE in that it is built without a plush comfort layer, so the surface of the bed has a medium-firm to firm feel at every Sleep Number setting. This makes it a great pick for back sleepers or those who prefer a more supportive-feel to their mattress. This bed does not have much pressure relief, so it may be uncomfortable for heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their sides. If you’re on a tight budget and want a Sleep Number bed, however, you could add a pillow top to the c2 mattress save a few bucks without sacrificing contouring comfort.

Sleep Number iLE Mattress Is Best For… | Purple Mattress Is Best For… |
Heavyweight sleepers | Budget shoppers |
Couples | Sleepers who need back pain relief |
Senior citizens | Those who prefer an all-foam bed |
The Purple mattress and the iLE are both responsive beds with thick foam layers that provide plush contouring comfort. The Purple mattress is a memory foam bed and does not have the responsive air technology of a Sleep Number bed. The Purple, however, is built with a grid-shaped layer of gel foam that responds quickly to your movements and cradles pressure points to provide pain relief to your back and joints. Since it doesn’t have smart features or other high-tech accessories, the Purple is several thousand dollars cheaper than the Sleep Number iLE.
The iLE’s responsive air chambers, however, provide more support for heavier sleepers. Sleepers over 230 pounds may sink uncomfortably far into the Purple mattress’s soft foam layers. The iLE’s adjustability also may be helpful for senior citizens, who can choose a softer firmness level to cradle aches and pains, then choose a firmer setting or pair the bed with an adjustable base for help sitting up or getting out of bed. Also, the iLE adjustable bed’s dual air technology may benefit couples who can set each side of the bed to their unique firmness level.

Sleep Number iLE Mattress Is Best For… | Saatva Solaire Mattress Is Best For… |
Lightweight to average-weight sleepers | Those who want an eco-friendly bed |
Sleepers who want a simpler experience | Sleepers who want ultimate adjustability |
Shoppers who want a smart bed | Shoppers who want a lifetime warranty |
If you’re shopping for a luxurious adjustable air bed, both the Sleep Number iLE and the Saatva Solaire mattress would fit the bill. However, these two high-end beds have some key features that set them apart. The Saatva Solaire bed has 50 firmness options, while the Sleep Number bed only has 20. Some sleepers may like having a wider array of firmness options, but others may find them overwhelming. Both beds are built with eco-conscious CertiPUR-US certified foam, but the Saatva Solaire is also made with environmentally-friendly materials such as organic cotton, wool, and natural latex. Saatva also offers a lifetime warranty, compared to Sleep Number’s 15 year coverage.
The iLE, however, has softer foam layers, making it a better choice for average and lightweight sleepers who like a fluffy and cozy feel to the bed. Also, unlike the Saatva Solaire, ,the iLE includes SleepIQ technology, which collects health data that can be used to learn about your sleep needs and preferences.

Sleep Number iLE Mattress Is Best For… | Eight Sleep Pod Pro Mattress Is Best For… |
Sleepers who want to adjust the firmness of their mattress | Sleepers who to adjust the temperature of their mattress |
Couples with different sleep positions. | Those who want a vibrating alarm clock built into the bed. |
Heavyweight sleepers | Sleepers who want an all-foam bed |
The iLE and the Eight Sleep Pod Pro are both luxury smart beds that track biometric data such as your heart rate and sleep patterns. The Eight Sleep Pod Pro, however, is an all-foam bed with a medium-firm firmness level. Although this bed’s firmness level isn’t adjustable, the temperature is. Sleepers can set each side of the bed to a different temperature setting. This bed also has a unique option of allowing you to set a vibrating alarm clock, which is useful if you regularly sleep through an alarm.
The iLE, however, has adjustable firmness with 20 firmness level options, and each side of the bed can be changed to suit a different sleep position. The iLE mattress also has the option of providing firmer support, which can be better to help heavyweight sleepers stay propped up comfortably on top of the bed throughout the night.

Sleep Number beds are adjustable air beds topped with foam, providing a uniquely customizable experience. The actual “Sleep Number” refers to the setting you can set your bed at, from 1-100, 1 being the softest, and 100 being the firmest.
Unfortunately, no. Sleep Number recommends using one of their Sleep Number bases, but if that’s not an option, look for a solid, firm platform bed frame. If it has slits, they should be no more than two inches apart. Because of the bed’s unique air chamber construction, this will ensure everything is properly supported.
Yep! Make sure you have an outlet available within 5 feet, so your bed can remain inflated all night.
The ILE Limited Edition Smart Bed is best for couples, combo sleepers, and those who want to try out that patented Sleep Number technology. It may not be best for people on a budget and those who prefer a traditional mattress feel.
