The original Purple mattress cushions your sensitive pressure points with a gel-like material called hyper-elastic polymer that’s molded into a pressure-relieving grid. The TEMPUR-Adapt—which is the Tempur-Pedic mattress we’re focusing on—is a memory foam mattress that supports your curves with high-quality Tempur material.
If you’re here, you’re probably having a hard time picking between the two. But don’t worry—by the end of this review, you’ll know which mattress suits your needs and preferences the most.
We test all of the mattresses in our reviews firsthand in our sleep lab. If you’re curious to know how we do it, here’s our testing methodology.
The Purple and Tempur-Pedic are both popular mattress brands that accommodate different types of sleeping positions and body types. In this section, we’ll be going through the strong points of each mattress.
Purple is best for… | Tempur-Pedic is best for… |
Back sleepers (<230 lbs) | Side sleepers (<230 lbs) |
Side sleepers (<130 lbs) | Back sleepers |
Hot sleepers | Those with shoulder pain |
Watch Corey and I duke it out in our review of the Purple and Tempur-Pedic mattresses. In this video, we’ll go through everything you need to know about the two popular mattress brands to see which one is best suited to your needs.
Here’s how the Purple and TEMPUR-Adapt compare when it comes to firmness and feel.
Knowing a mattress’s firmness level will give you a good idea of how it feels to sleep on them before buying. It’s also important to know whether the firmness of the mattress will suit your sleeping position and body type which can greatly affect your entire sleeping experience. For this section, we’ll be rating the two mattresses using our firmness scale that goes from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest to 10 being the firmest.
We rated both mattresses a 6.5/10 on our firmness scale which means that they have a medium-firm feel. But despite having similar firmness levels, these mattresses feel different to sleep on because of the difference between the materials and construction.
The Purple has a distinct feel because of its responsive gel grid layer that collapses in response to pressure. When lying down, you can feel the gel-like layer, but it’s not all uncomfortable. In fact, it feels like you’re sleeping on an even and sturdy surface. We also found the Purple very breathable and cooling because of the gel grid layer.
The TEMPUR-Adapt has a classic memory foam feel—slow sinking and body contouring. It feels very supportive, even around the edges. It feels cool to the touch, but like many memory foam mattresses, it tends to soak up body heat through the night.
Overall, the Purple mattress is best suited to lightweight or average-weight sleepers. We find that it offers great contouring features for the shoulders and hips, while the foam layers underneath provide great support for the back. Heavyweight sleepers will probably sink through the shallow comfort layer to the firmer layers below.
TEMPUR-Adapt works for all body types, though heavyweight sleepers may have an issue with excess sinkage, and some lightweight sleepers may find the mattress to be too firm. On the other hand, its firmness level is great for stomach sleepers who need good support for their hip area. Some side sleepers will probably sleep comfortably on the TEMPUR-Adapt, but others may find that its firmness puts excess pressure on their side.
Purple Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 3 | 4 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 5 | 2 | 3 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 3 | 1 | 3 |
TEMPUR-Adapt Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 3 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 4 | 4 | 4 |
Both mattresses are fantastic at maintaining the natural “S” curve of the spine. Average weight back sleepers only have to choose based on their feel preferences.
Average weight side sleepers will probably have a more comfortable time sleeping on the Purple’s cushioning and conforming gel grid layer. The majority of side sleepers will find the TEMPUR-Adapt too firm.
The TEMPUR-Adapt outperforms the Purple when it comes to accommodating average weight stomach sleepers because of its firmer memory foam layers. Stomach sleepers will find their hips sinking in too much on the Purple, which may lead to lower back pain.
Average weight combination sleepers are better off with Purple’s responsive grid layer, especially those who change positions a lot. The Tempur-Pedic mattress is more sinking than responsive, so they may have trouble moving around on it.
The TEMPUR-Adapt accommodates heavyweight back sleepers very well, unlike the Purple mattress. The latter sinks more the heavier the pressure on it, so heavier sleepers probably won’t get the support needed for their back.
We don’t really recommend either mattress for heavyweight side sleepers. Heavier side sleepers will probably sink too far into the Purple, and the TEMPUR-Adapt will probably be too firm for comfort.
Some heavyweight stomach sleepers will likely be more comfortable on the TEMPUR-Adapt, but others may feel like they need more support. The Purple will be too soft and sinking, unable to keep the hips elevated and aligned with the spine.
Heavyweight combination sleepers should go for the Purple over the TEMPUR-Adapt since the former offers more responsiveness. However, the heavier you are, the more you’ll sink into the TEMPUR-Adapt, which may hinder your movement.
Both the Purple and TEMPUR-Adapt mattresses are fantastic choices for lightweight back sleepers since they both offer great support and ample cushion for the spine.
For lightweight side sleepers, we recommend the softer and more responsive Purple mattress over the TEMPUR-Adapt since it does a greater job at cushioning and conforming around the hip and shoulder areas.
Lightweight stomach sleepers will be comfy on either mattress, but the TEMPUR-Adapt has the upper hand since it provides a firmer and more supportive feel for the hips, keeping it aligned with the spine.
Lastly, we think lightweight combination sleepers should go for the Purple mattress because of its inherent responsiveness. While the TEMPUR-Adapt may also work well, its foam layers are more sinking than responsive.
The original Purple is a 9.25” hybrid mattress that has three layers, while the TEMPUR-Adapt is a slightly thicker 10” all-foam mattress that also has three layers. Here’s an in-depth look at each mattress’s makeup.
Purple Mattress Materials | TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress Materials |
Viscose, Polyester, & Lycra Blend Cover | 360° Stretch Cover |
Purple Smart Grid | Tempur-ES Comfort Layer |
Soft Polyfoam Transition Layer | Tempur-APR Support Layer |
High-Density Polyfoam Base + Non-Slip Bottom Cover | High-Density Base Layer |
Purple has a viscose, polyester, and Lycra blend cover that’s soft to the touch, flexible, and has the ability to regulate temperature. The TEMPUR Adapt has a 360° Stretch cover, which is made from premium-knit fabric that’s soft and cooling.
The Purple’s Smart Grid layer is made from a Hyper-Elastic polymer gel material that provides ample pressure relief and support, while the TEMPUR-Adapt uses its patented Tempur-ES foam that gently contours the body for deeper sleep and pressure relief.
Both mattresses have high-density foam layers that add to the mattresses’ firmness and durability.

Temperature plays a big role in mattress comfort, especially for memory foam, since it gets firmer in colder temperatures. Once it’s warmed up, the memory foam in the TEMPUR-Adapt retains quite a bit of heat. In contrast, the Purple mattress sleeps decidedly cooler between the two. The Purple Grid naturally improves airflow, especially as you move around on the mattress. For even cooler options, see our list of the best cooling mattresses.
If you sleep with a partner or pet, you probably want a mattress that effectively reduces motion transfer, otherwise, you may be woken by movement on the other side of the bed. Neither mattress performs poorly in this category, but the high-density memory foam in the TEMPUR-Adapt reduces motion transfer better than the foam and hyper-elastic polymer in the Purple.

Edge support is often overlooked, but it’s important if you find yourself sitting or sleeping near the edges of the bed. Both of these mattresses provide above-average edge support, but the Purple has a high-density foam perimeter that provides better edge support than the Tempur material on top of the TEMPUR-Adapt.
Pressure relief is a favorite category for side sleepers, who need to avoid putting excess weight on their shoulders and hips. The Purple Grid relaxes in response to pressure, so your inverted curves are supported and your pressure points are cushioned.
The same is true for Tempur material, though it has a more conforming feel—sort of like being hugged by the mattress. We think the TEMPUR-Adapt provides a little better pressure relief.
A mattress’s pain-relieving abilities are dependent on the sleeper’s sleeping position and body type.
Purple does a fantastic job at relieving pressure off heavier areas, so we definitely recommend it for sleepers experiencing back pain (especially lower back pain). However, those experiencing shoulder pain may find it a bit too lacking when it comes to support and cushion. Also, folks who weigh over 230 lbs may also want to think twice about getting the Purple, as it’s probably not supportive and cushioning enough.
One of the huge benefits you get from an all-foam mattress like the TEMPUR-Adapt is that it cradles the body’s natural curves well which can help relieve body pain. For back sleepers, the TEMPUR-Adapt is an easy recommendation since it offers plenty of support for the back. However, the mattress falls short when it comes to supporting side sleepers because of its firm foam nature.
Mattress durability depends on materials and frequency of use. Typically, memory foam lasts for around six to seven years and up to a decade. The hyper-elastic polymer material used in the Purple mattress is designed never to break down. With that said, regular use may cause shallow indentations to form on either material. Fortunately, both mattresses are protected by a 10-year warranty.
Purple provides free shipping across the contiguous U.S. and paid shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada. You’ll also get a 100-day sleep trial and a 10-year warranty that covers material and workmanship defects.
Tempur-Pedic comes not only with free shipping but also free white glove delivery (which includes mattress removal). They ship across the contiguous U.S., but you may have to pay extra if you live in Alaska or Hawaii. Each mattress also comes with a 90-day sleep trial and a 10-year warranty.

The TEMPUR-Adapt is our choice for side sleepers and those with back pain. Hot sleepers and combination sleepers fare better on the Purple, and back sleepers can take their pick of the two. Couples will get better motion isolation on the TEMPUR-Adapt but better edge support on the Purple. As for pricing, the original Purple is more budget-friendly.
Both mattresses have devoted fans and critics, but they each come with standard mattress industry trial periods, so you can see for yourself in the comfort of your own home.
The Purple is a great hybrid mattress, but we’ve heard some customer complaints about early sagging and indentations and poor customer service. Some owners also feel like it’s firmer than expected and that they had difficulty moving on it (but that depends more on the body type).
Tempur-Pedic mattresses will probably last you around seven to ten years, depending on how much daily wear and tear you subject it to. To prolong your mattress’s lifespan, it’s best to practice proper mattress care and maintenance regularly.
The Tempur-Pedic mattress is a fantastic foam mattress but not without complaints. We heard some owners complaining that it’s too firm and that it’s too hot, but those are common complaints for most foam mattresses.
