I’ll break down how the Purple RestorePlus mattress performed in each type of category including pressure relief, cooling, durability, motion isolation and more.
The Purple RestorePlus comes from Purple’s premium collection. It includes the patented Purple Grid, plus coils to deliver a plush, yet supportive feel. Read on to find out if it will work for you.
The soft version of the Purple RestorePlus is a medium-soft mattress that supports all sleeping positions. The breathable gel grid and pocketed coils make it a good choice for hot sleepers. However, it lacks the edge support seniors need to easily get in and out of bed.
Financing options are available for this mattress.
Watch me test the RestorePlus in the Nerd Lab, so you can see firsthand how it performs.
The Mattress Nerd firmness scale ranges between 1–10, with 10 being firmer than sleeping on the floor. We tested the soft version of the Purple RestorePlus, which is a medium-soft, 4/10 on our scale. A medium-soft mattress is typically best for side sleepers because they require a bit of cradle from the mattress. We estimate that the firmer version will be more like a 6 or 7/10, best for back and stomach sleepers.
However, sleepers that weigh under 130 lbs (what we call lightweight sleepers) may experience the feel as a bit firmer, and heavyweight sleepers (those who weigh above 230 lbs) may think it’s even softer than a 4/10 because they sink deeper into the comfort layers.
When I initially lay down on the Purple RestorePlus, the first thing I felt was that Purple Grid. This version of the hyper-polymer grid is very soft and plush, but also super bouncy. Despite the plush feel, expect to stay elevated on the mattress. The grid is designed to buckle strategically at your pressure points, so it offers overall elevation despite the soft feel.
Body Type: | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers |
Lightweight< 130 lbs: | 5 | 4 | 4 |
Average-weight130–230 lbs: | 5 | 4 | 4 |
Heavyweight> 230 lbs: | 5 | 4 | 4 |
1 = Very poor 2 = Not good 3 = Fair 4 = Good 5 = Excellent
The best mattresses for back sleepers eases pressure off of the lumbar area and keeps the spine in its natural alignment. The Purple Grid perfectly aligns the spines of lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight back sleepers. The grid evenly distributes your weight, so pressure stays off of your low back.
The most reliable way we test if a mattress is good for side sleepers is by using our pressure relief map. Our results show that the soft layers and Purple grid evenly distribute the weight of side sleepers and ease pressure off of their hips and shoulders. We typically see different results for lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight side sleepers, but this time around, the results were positive for all weight categories, making the soft version one of the best mattresses for side sleepers.
Stomach sleepers just need a bed that keeps the hips from sinking too far into the mattress. Usually firmer mattresses support stomach sleepers the best. However, I was surprised to find that the Purple Restore is a good option for stomach sleepers looking for a soft feel. It’s rare to get this level of elevation on a softer bed.
If you want more of a firm feel, lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight stomach sleepers can try the firm version of the Purple RestorePlus or you can check out our list of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
The best mattresses for combination sleepers are responsive and work for each sleeping position. The Purple RestorePlus checks both of these boxes, so combination sleepers of all sizes can find comfort on the mattress.
The Purple RestorePlus contains breathable layers, like the Purple grid and pocketed coils, which allows your body heat to flow through the bed. This makes the RestorePlus a cooling mattress that should keep you from overheating throughout the night. For more choices like this, visit our list of the best cooling mattresses.
Now, let’s move on to edge support, or how well a mattress can hold up weight on the edges. A mattress with good edge support is more durable, which is especially important for seniors, couples looking for extra mattress space, or any brave people who like sleeping on the edge.
The edge of this mattress is not a place to securely lie without fear of falling. The way the grid buckles under your weight makes you feel as if the bed is slipping from under you on the edge.
A responsive mattress is a bed that is easy to move around on. The Purple grid provides a lot of bounce and responsiveness and the coils reinforce this trait. Thus, this mattress should be a good option for combination sleepers and sex.
If you ever get woken up by your sleeping partner moving, you’ll wanna pay attention to this section. We’re gonna take a look at the Purple’s motion transfer, or how well it muffles any unwanted movement on the mattress.
To test this factor, I placed a beaker of water on one side of the bed. The liquid in that beaker represents how much movement you’ll feel. I dropped a weighted ball on the mattress to simulate someone tossing, turning, and getting in and out of bed. The test revealed the motion transfers quite a bit, which is understandable given the level of responsiveness.
During testing, we noticed a bit of noise from the air “whooshing” through the Purple Grid, but nothing more.
The best mattresses for back pain keep your spine in proper alignment. The Purple RestorePlus keeps back sleepers’ spines in their natural curve and helps keep side sleepers’ spines straight. If you have hip or shoulder pain, our pressure maps showed that Purple does a good job keeping pain and pressure off of these areas.
Plan on using your mattress for more than just sleeping? It’s crucial to have a bed that’s easy to move around on, cooling, durable, and quiet for sex. The RestorePlus checks all of these boxes, so it should be a solid choice for you and your partner.
Off-gassing is a smell you may experience after unboxing a mattress containing foam. Since the Purple doesn’t have many foam layers, there was not an overwhelming off-gassing scent when we unboxed the mattress.
Hybrid mattresses have a reputation for being pretty durable, and the Purple Restore is no expection. It utilizes the Purple Grid, which is made of durable hyper-polymer material (seriously, have you seen the videos where the brand runs it over with a car and it maintains its shape?) and supportive coils. However, we did give it one point off for lack of great edge support, which is a marker of durability.
How a mattress is constructed says a lot about who it’s going to be good for. It’s my job to cut into the mattresses to get a good look at the layers and how they perform. Don’t try this at home unless you plan on voiding your warranty. Let’s take a peek inside.
SoftFlex Cover: The mattress cover wicks away moisture and moves easily with the Purple grid.
GelFlex Grid: The GelFlex Grid is specific to Purple mattresses. It’s made of hyper-polymer and buckles strategically at your pressure points. This layer is also surrounded in edge support foam.
Ultra Comfort Foam: Next, there is a soft, pressure-relieving foam comfort layer.
3 Zone Responsive Coils: The support layer is made of responsive pocketed coils for extra bounce, breathability, and durability. They’re also zoned, which keeps your body perfectly aligned.

The Purple RestorePlus will ship free to the contiguous U.S. (if you live in Alaska or Hawaii, the delivery fee will be calculated at checkout). It will arrive at your door in a box or you can pay an additional $200 fee for white glove delivery and in-home setup.
If you decide to unbox, use a partner. When our team unboxed the RestorePlus, we noticed it was pretty heavy. Open the box, lay the mattress on your foundation, and unroll the plastic until the mattress is free. Allow it to spring to life, and you should be ready to dress it up with sheets.
Purple offers the industry-standard 10-year limited warranty. It covers any workmanship defects such as excessive indentations, cracks, and splits. It does not cover abuse, neglect, or firmness changes. Be aware of the type of foundation you set your mattress on; using an incompatible base can void your warranty, so can removing the cover.
A sleep trial is essentially your window for free returns. During this timeframe, you take the mattress into your home and sleep on it as if it is a final purchase, except if you don’t like it, you can return it for a full refund or exchange it for a different Purple mattress. Purple offers the industry-standard 100-night sleep trial period.
If you wish to return or exchange your Purple RestorePlus, you must wait at least 21 days to ensure you’ve broken in your bed. Contact their customer care team at 1-888-848-2305 and they will walk you through the process.

The original Purple mattress uses the Purple grid over two foam layers to create an all-foam bed with great alignment. Because the RestorePlus has supportive coils, it works better for heavy people and hot sleepers. The Purple has a firmer feel that stomach sleepers may enjoy, while the RestorePlus has a soft option that suits side sleepers.

The extra foam isolates motion better than the RestorePlus, so it’s better for couples. It also has really solid edge support, crowning it the winner for seniors as well.

The Purple Grid is made to ease back pain by providing near perfect spinal alignment to side and back sleepers. This quality makes Purple mattresses a good choice for those with back pain, as spine alignment is key to preventing kinks in your back, and thus, back pain.
Purple mattresses are some of the most durable beds we’ve come across, specifically because of the Purple GelFlex Grid. The Purple grid isn’t as prone to sinkage as a foam comfort layer would be. However, be wary of the edge support—they are not super supportive in most Purple mattresses.
We think the softest Purple mattress is the Purple RestorePlus (soft version). We put this bed at a 4/10 on our firmness scale, or medium-soft. The original Purple mattress is a medium-firm 7/10 and the Purple Rejuvenate mattress is a 6.5/10, or medium-firm as well.
