The Puffy mattress and Tempur-Pedic’s TEMPUR-Cloud are both popular memory foam beds from major mattress brands.
Each of these mattresses have great reputations—so how do you know which one is best for you? We’ll show you in this easy-to-follow mattress review where we unpack the details of how each bed performs for different body types and sleeping preferences.
Puffy is best for… | Tempur-Pedic is best for… |
Light and average-weight side sleepers | Back and stomach sleepers |
Combination sleepers | Couples |
Budget shoppers | Heavyweight sleepers |
Each of these two all-foam beds has a unique firmness level and feel.
At Mattress Nerd, we measure mattress firmness on a scale between 1-10. The softest mattress is a 1, while a 10 would feel like sleeping on a wooden plank. Both of these mattresses have a medium firmness level. The Puffy feels like a 6 out of 10, while the TEMPUR-Cloud is a slightly firmer 7 out of 10.
This firmness level generally works for most sleepers, although it may feel firmer to lightweight sleepers whose bodies aren’t heavy enough to sink fully into the comfort layers. Likewise, this bed may feel softer to heavyweight sleepers who will sink deeper into the mattress.
When you lay on the Puffy mattress, you’ll feel deep pressure relief around your joints and areas of the body that tend to push further into the bed. This cushioning is balanced with a supportive and responsive sensation that keeps the bed from feeling too doughy.
Unlike Puffy mattress’s instant pressure relief, the TEMPUR-Cloud feels a bit firmer when you first lay down. You’ll gradually sink into the bed and will feel the pressure-relieving qualities.
The Puffy mattress has a deep cushy surface that is well suited for side sleepers—the bed’s comfort layers cradle the shoulders and hips as they press into the mattress to prevent morning aches and pains. Light and average weight back sleepers may find the support they need in this mattress but stomach sleepers of all body types should steer clear.
The TEMPUR-Cloud bed has a firmer level of support that helps keep the spines of back and stomach sleepers in a healthy, neutral position throughout the night. Side sleepers, however, may feel some stiffness and misalingment because this bed doesn’t have enough give to provide the pressure relief they need.
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 4 | 3 | 5 |
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): | 3 | 3 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 2 | 2 | 3 |
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 3 |
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 4 | 4 | 4 |
1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent
Average-weight side sleepers who sleep on their sides should be able to get a good night’s sleep on the Puffy’s deeply cushioning surface, but back sleepers and stomach sleepers won’t like this bed unless they prefer an extra plush feel.
The TEMPUR-Cloud has a balanced level of support to keep back and stomach sleepers in a healthy posture while still gently conforming to their curves, but side sleepers should steer clear. This bed will likely feel a bit too firm on your shoulders and hips in the side sleeping position. Either of these mattresses will work for combination sleepers—they should go with the mattress that best suits their predominant sleeping position.
While the Puffy doesn’t have enough to keep sleepers over 230 lbs supported, the TEMPUR-Cloud is a solid pick for heavyweight sleepers in any sleep position. Side, back, and stomach sleepers alike will be both cushioned and supported by this medium-firm foam bed, and it’s durable layers will support heavier bodies over time.
Lightweight back sleepers and combination sleepers will be happy with either mattress, but side sleepers should stick with the soft Puffy bed to ensure they get the pressure relief they need on the hips and shoulders. Stomach sleepers should opt for the firmer TEMPUR-Cloud, which will keep the midsection cushioned without allowing uncomfortable sinkage throughout the night.
Even though both of these mattresses are built with memory foam, they have some unique materials that set them apart.
Puffy Mattress Materials | Tempur-Pedic Mattress Materials |
Polyester cover | Premium knit fabric layer |
Cooling cloud foam | TEMPUR-ES foam |
Climate-adaptive foam | Adaptable TEMPUR foam |
Foam support layer | High-density foam |
The Puffy mattress comes wrapped in a stretchy thin polyester cover, while the TEMPUR-Cloud bed comes with an ultra-breathable moisture-wicking that you can remove and wash.
The Puffy bed has two comfort layers: a gel-infused Cooling Cloud layer, and a climate adaptive layer that helps provide consistent support in every season. The TEMPUR-Cloud has a layer of Tempur-ES comfort foam, which provides a balance of firm support and soft comfort as you lay on the bed.
The Puffy has a 6 inch layer of support foam at the base of the bed. The TEMPUR-Cloud also has a layer of firmer support foam to add extra stability and durability to the bed.

If you tend to sleep hot, neither of these memory foam beds will help cool you down. All-foam mattresses can tend to trap heat, so you should opt for an innerspring, hybrid or latex mattress if you need a cooling mattress.
When you sleep with a partner or a pet, you’ll want a bed that will help limit motion transfer so you won’t be disturbed if your sleepmate tends to move around at night. The Puffy’s thick layers do a great job of absorbing movements to help even light sleepers get a restful night’s sleep.
Edge support adds durability to the bed and prevents you from slipping off the sides if you like to perch at the end of the mattress or need extra support as you get in and out of bed. Neither of these all foam beds have above-average edge support.
If you have sore joints or sleep on your side, you’ll want a bed with ample pressure relief. The Puffy bed’s thick comfort layers go above and beyond in this department—they’ll cradle your curves and help redistribute your weight along the length of the bed to keep stress off pressure points. The TEMPUR-Cloud also has a moderate amount of pressure relief that will work for the average sleeper.
A bed that supports your sleep position and body type can help prevent pain. If you are a lightweight sleeper or sleep on your side and weigh under 230 lbs, the Puffy mattress’s fluffy sleeping surface may be a good fit to keep you comfortable. If you sleep on your stomach or are a heavyweight sleeper, the TTEMPUR-Cloud’s firmer level of support may be a better fit to help you wake up without aches and pains.
Both of these beds are made of high quality materials, but the TEMPUR-Cloud’s multi-layer construction will likely hold up for slightly longer.
Puffy offers free shipping through FedEx for those in the contiguous United States, but you can have a Puffy bed delivered to Alaska or Hawaii for a fee. You’ll have a 101 night sleep trial to test the bed and a lifetime warranty if you decide to keep it.
The TEMPUR-Cloud also ships free within the contiguous United States and ships for a fee to Alaska and Hawaii. This bed comes with a 90 day sleep trial period and a 10-year warranty.
Each of these all-foam mattresses is suited to a different set of sleepers. If you have a lightweight body type, are a side sleeper under 230 lbs or prefer a fluffy and plush sleeping surface, the Puffy might be a good pick for you. If you like an all-foam feel but need a firmer level of support, the TEMPUR-Cloud is a good choice. Its firm support layer also makes it a good pick for stomach sleepers, heavyweight sleepers, and senior citizens.
No. The Puffy mattress is designed so that the comfort layers are positioned closer to the surface of the bed and the support layers are close to the bottom. If you flip this bed, you won’t be able to benefit from the pressure relieving qualities of this mattress.
Both the Puffy mattress and the TEMPUR-Cloud mattress will have a break in period. It typically takes between 2-4 weeks for your mattress to break in and soften. Take advantage of your sleep trial period to completely break in your bed before you decide whether it is right for you.
Tempur-Pedic’s great qualities make it one of the most popular mattresses on the market, but it does have a few cons. These mattresses are on the pricier side, and they don’t offer the deep and fluffy pressure relief that many expect from an all-foam mattress.
