The Loom & Leaf from Saatva and the original Layla are both well-made memory foam mattresses. In this comparison, we’re breaking down the good and bad so you can make an educated decision about which memory foam mattress is right for you.
The Loom & Leaf is a premium memory foam mattress with two firmness options. It’s a more budget-friendly alternative to Tempur-Pedic, but it’s still an expensive mattress. The original Layla mattress is a flippable memory foam with cooling foam and a price tag that’s definitely easier on the wallet.

Side sleepers | Memory foam fans |
Couples | Shoppers on a budget |
Both the Loom & Leaf and the Layla mattresses are made with memory foam, but that doesn’t mean they have the same feel.
The Loom & Leaf has a choice of firmness. Relaxed Firm is a medium-firm feel, about a 6 on the 1-10 firmness scale, which should feel soft but supported to average-weight sleepers. It could feel a little firmer to lightweight sleepers. The firm option is noticeably firmer–around an 8 on the scale–but heavyweight sleepers over 230 pounds will sink in a little more deeply and should find it feels a little plusher.
The Layla mattress has soft and firm sides. The soft side is medium-soft–around a 4 on the firmness scale–and the firm side is medium-firm, or about a 6.5 Lightweight and average-weight sleepers will find the plusher side quite soft, while most sleepers should find the firmer side pretty universally comfortable.
Regardless of the firmness option you choose, the Loom & Leaf mattress has the close, contouring feel of memory foam. It’s dense and slow-moving with the “hugged” sensation of this material, but the firm will be a little easier to move around on.
The soft side of the Layla mattress has the traditional sensation of memory foam. Flip it over, and you’ll notice a little more bounce and responsiveness.
Side sleepers will find the Medium Firm Loom & Leaf cradling, and back and stomach sleepers should be comfortably supported with either firmness. Depending on the side of the Layla mattress you sleep on, it will feel softer or firmer. The way you sleep also matters. It will feel cushioning for side sleepers, and supportive for stomach and back sleepers.
Loom & Leaf Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 3 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 4 | 3 | 4 |
Layla Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 4 | 5 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 4 | 3 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 2 | 2 | 3 |
Average-weight back and stomach sleepers will be comfortable on the Medium Firm version of the Loom & Leaf, and side sleepers should also have the cushioning they need in their hips and shoulders. Combination sleepers may find it a little difficult to comfortably switch positions, just because the memory foam is so dense.
On the Layla mattress, average-weight back sleepers should snooze comfortably on the firmer side. Sid sleepers in this weight range will love the softer side, but even average-weight stomach sleepers may find their hips dip too far to be comfortable. Combination sleepers should be able to move comfortably on the firmer side.
Heavyweight back and stomach sleepers should opt for the firmer Loom & Leaf mattress to ensure they’re sufficiently supported, and side sleepers in this weight range will probably sink in enough to feel comfortably cushioned. However, heavyweight combination sleepers who move a lot in the night will likely find they feel too “stuck” to easily change positions.
The Layla mattress isn’t a great pick for heavyweight back and stomach sleepers–it just doesn’t have the support they need for proper spinal alignment. Side sleepers in this weight range should find the firmer side works well, however, and combination sleepers could go either way. If they change positions often at night, they may find they feel a little trapped, even on the firmer side.
Lightweight back sleepers could opt for either firmness on the Loom & Leaf, and stomach sleepers should get all the lumbar support they need on the softer pick. Side sleepers, however, may find they experience a little discomfort around the shoulders. Combination sleepers, even in the lighter weight range, may find they feel a little too stuck to be comfortable.
Lightweight back and stomach sleepers should be supported well on the Layla, and combination sleepers should find it really easy to move around, especially on the firmer side. Side sleepers will likely find the softer side really comfortable.

The comfort layers in the Loom & Leaf are made with memory foam. Upper layers are infused with gel for cooling benefits, while deeper comfort layers are high-density for pressure relief and contouring.
In the Layla, the comfort layers on both sides are copper-infused memory foam to minimize heat retention.
The support layers in the Loom & Leaf are made with durable polyfoam for structure and stability. The Layla’s central support layers include polyfoam and a thick core base foam.

The Loom & Leaf has cooling gel and perforations in its memory foam, but it doesn’t have the breathability of coils. If you sleep hot, there are better options–and the Layla may be one of them. Between the cool-to-the-touch cover and the copper-infused foam, it sleeps cool for a memory foam mattress. For really hot sleepers, however, a hybrid is probably a better option.
Memory foam mattresses generally have great motion isolation, and the Loom & Leaf is no exception. The same is true on the Layla, though the softer side does have a touch more movement than the firmer side.
Edge support isn’t typically a standout feature of all-foam mattresses. The Loom & Leaf compresses quite a bit along the edges, but the Layla is pretty decent. You should be able to sleep comfortably all the way to the edges.
Memory foam contours closely to the body, which helps relieve pressure pain and ensure spinal alignment. That makes both the Loom & Leaf and the Layla a good pick for people who are struggling with pressure point pain.
The Loom & Leaf should be supportive enough for most sleepers, assuming they choose the right firmness for their sleep style and body type. That will help relieve lower back pain. However, those with hip or shoulder pain may want to look for a softer mattress. The Layla is a great option for general pain relief as well, especially since sleepers have two sides to test out.
The Loom & Leaf is a durable mattress considering its materials, and you can reasonably expect it to last between 8 and 10 years. The Layla offers decent durability for light and average-weight sleepers, but heavyweight sleepers shouldn’t expect long-term durability.
The Loom & Leaf mattress comes with a 365-night home trial. It ships free with white-glove delivery, which means it’s set up in the room of your choice, and it has a lifetime warranty.
The Layla mattress comes with a 120-night sleep trial. It ships free, and like the Loom & Leaf mattress, it also has a lifetime warranty.

Both the Loom & Leaf are memory foam mattresses with a choice of firmness. The Loom & Leaf is a luxury pick, with a price tag that reflects it, but it’s a great alternative if you want something similar to Tempur-Pedic. However, it will likely sleep warm and it may not have the support heavyweight sleepers need in certain positions.
The Layla mattress is a better pick for hot sleepers and it has the advantage of two firmnesses on either side. It has a lower price point, which can make it a great option for people who are exploring memory foam and aren’t sure which firmness is best for their needs.
The Loom & Leaf comes in two firmness options, and the firmer version can be a good pick for heavy sleepers. However, depending on your sleeping position, even the firmer feel may not offer the right level of support you need to keep aches and pains at bay.
The Layla mattress is made with copper-infused memory foam, which helps prevent heat from building up. It also has a cool-to-the-touch cover. Mildly hot sleepers will likely fare well on the Layla, but those who really overheat should probably investigate hybrid mattresses and temperature-regulating materials.
The Layla mattress has a firm side and a soft side. However, the firmer side has a medium-firm feel that’s around a 6.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale. That firmness works well for many sleepers, but if you’re looking for a true firm mattress, there are better options.
