Is the Loom & Leaf Mattress For You?
Who’s Going to Love the Loom & Leaf Mattress
- Back sleepers of all body types—lightweight (< 130 lbs), average-weight (130–230 lbs) or heavyweight (> 230 lbs)
- Side sleepers over 130 lbs
- Stomach sleepers under 230 lbs
- Those looking for a lower cost Tempur-Pedic alternative
Who Should Steer Clear of the Loom & Leaf Mattress
- People looking for easy mobility or a lot of bounce—instead, consider the Saatva Classic mattress, which has a base layer of springy coils and a polyfoam (not memory foam) pillow top.
- Lightweight side sleepers—instead, opt for a softer memory foam mattress, like the Helix Sunset.
- Heavyweight stomach sleepers—instead, look for better support in the best mattresses for heavy people roundup. The Titan mattress is one of our top choices in this category.
The Loom & Leaf by Saatva focused squarely at dethroning Tempur-Pedic as the main name in memory foam mattresses. Of all of the direct-to-consumer mattresses we’ve tried, the Loom & Leaf feels the most like Tempur-Pedic and at a fraction of the price.

Loom & Leaf Firmness and Feel
Loom & Leaf Firmness
The Loom & Leaf comes in two firmness levels: Relaxed Firm and Firm. The Relaxed Firm option is about a 6/10 on our 1–10 firmness scale (with 10 being floorboard firm). In other words, the softer version of the Loom & Leaf has a medium-firm feel, which is the best fit for back or side sleepers.
The Firm option is an 8/10 on the scale, or extra firm. This firmness level works best for stomach or back sleepers. It’s also the better choice for anyone who needs a supportive mattress for back pain.
What Does the Loom & Leaf Feel Like?
Both versions of the Loom & Leaf have the close, contouring feel of a traditional memory foam mattress. The two top layers of memory foam hug your body, so it takes more effort to change positions than it would on a latex or innerspring mattress. The Firm version is easier to move around on because you won’t sink as deeply into the top foam layers. In both versions, the extra lumbar support foam under your hips adds noticeable support for your lower back.
What Sleeping Position Is the Loom & Leaf Best For?
Body Type | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers |
Lightweight < 130 lbs: | 5 | 5 | 3 |
Average-weight 130–230 lbs: | 5 | 5 | 4 |
Heavyweight > 230 lbs: | 4 | 3 | 4 |
1 = Very poor 2 = Not good 3 = Fair 4 = Good 5 = Excellent
Back Sleepers
Most back sleepers will be comfortable with either Loom & Leaf firmness level. Heavier back sleepers will likely prefer the firmer option, while lightweight and average-weight folks could go either way. For other constructions that support the spine, see our list on the best mattresses for back sleepers.
Stomach Sleepers
For those under 230 lbs, the Loom & Leaf keeps the spine aligned and prevents pressure on the lower back. Heavyweight stomach sleepers may experience some hip sinkage on the Relaxed Firm version, but should get decent support with the Firm model. Still, there are better firm mattresses for stomach sleepers over 230 lbs. If you’re looking for strong support at the hips, look through the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
Side Sleepers
The Relaxed Firm Loom & Leaf is a good mattress for side sleepers over 130 lbs. With either firmness level, most lightweight folks will experience some discomfort around the shoulders, but they’ll still have enough support to keep the spine aligned. A medium or soft mattress would be a better fit.
Combination Sleepers
Since the Loom & Leaf is a memory foam mattress, you’re more likely to feel “stuck,” so deciding if it’s the right mattress for you will come down to how often you change sleeping positions. If you move around a lot, but love memory foam, you may want to look for a hybrid mattress with memory foam comfort layers.
Loom & Leaf Performance
Is the Loom & Leaf Cooling?
Most layers in the Loom & Leaf include some material or construction element that counters heat retention. For example, there’s the cooling gel and breathable micro-perforations in the top layer and cooling gel laminated right at the lumbar region of the back.
With that said, the Loom & Leaf is a memory foam mattress, and it doesn’t have the breathability of a mattress with coils. We also noticed some heat buildup during testing. Overall, the average person shouldn’t need to worry about overheating, but those with naturally higher sleeping temperatures will want a more cooling mattress.
Edge Support
The Loom & Leaf isn’t outstanding when it comes to edge support. When I laid near the edge or sat on the edges to get in and out of the bed they compressed a lot. That’s not a huge deal for most shoppers, but it could make a big difference for those with mobility issues.
Responsiveness
With the Loom & Leaf, you won’t experience the bounce or responsiveness of a mattress with coils or naturally buoyant materials like latex. Since neither version of the Loom & Leaf is super soft, you won’t sink too far into the bed, which should make moving around easier. But if you’re a combination sleeper who tosses and turns a lot, you may want a more responsive mattress.
Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?
The Loom & Leaf has great motion isolation, since memory foam is so dense and slow moving. We hardly noticed any movement from one side of the mattress to the other during our testing process. For other mattresses with great motion isolation, see our recommendations for the best mattress for couples.
Noise
We didn’t notice any noise coming from the Loom & Leaf during testing, so we consider it to be a very quiet mattress.
Pain Relief
The Loom & Leaf offers the best pain relief to those with lower back pain who weigh under 230 lbs. The Firm option is supportive enough to keep these folks situated on top of the mattress. That means their spines will stay in a neutral alignment—with the shoulders and hips at the same level.
Those with shoulder or hip pain may want a softer mattress, but they should still look for one that keeps their spine aligned. For side sleepers, that looks like a straight line from head to tailbone when viewed from the side. The Loom & Leaf helps you maintain spinal alignment, but there are even more pressure-relieving options out there. See the best mattresses for shoulder pain and the best mattresses for back pain.
Sex
The best mattresses for sex keep you cool, quickly respond to changes in position, and stay quiet. The Loom & Leaf is quiet, but it earned only average scores for temperature regulation and responsiveness, so there are better options out there for intimate activities. Look for mattresses with coils, since they’re both breathable and bouncy.
Off-Gassing
All-foam mattresses off-gas during production, but sometimes they are packaged before they get the chance to fully air out. When you unbox them, they often have a chemical odor (a new mattress smell) that’s similar to a freshly painted room or the inside of a new car. This odor is non-toxic, especially since Saatva uses CertiPUR-US certified foams that have low emissions and no harmful chemicals.
Also, Saatva doesn’t compress and roll the Loom & Leaf mattress for shipping, so it should be fully aired out by the time it reaches your bedroom. If there is an off-gassing odor, make sure your room is ventilated and leave your sheets off for 24 hours. The scent should be gone after a day.
Durability
High quality memory foam is a durable mattress material, but it is prone to forming body impressions over time. If you use a supportive bed frame and rotate your Loom & Leaf mattress once every few months (for even wear-in), it should last you eight to 10 years. Also, Saatva covers the Loom & Leaf with a Lifetime warranty.
Loom & Leaf Mattress Construction: What’s It Made Of?
The Loom & Leaf is made of memory foam comfort layers, polyfoam support layers, cooling gel, and an organic cotton cover. Both firmness options are similarly constructed.
Layer #1—Organic Cotton Cover: The Loom & Leaf is wrapped in a breathable, organic cotton cover that’s treated with a natural thistle flame retardant. The fabric on top is quilted with plush foam for extra comfort.
Layer #2—Spinal Gel Layer: This layer of cooling gel only covers the center third of the mattress—under your lower back and hips. It’s meant to improve your spinal alignment in every sleeping position, and the gel is also temperature regulating.
Layer #3—Gel Memory Foam (2″): The top layer of memory foam is infused with cooling gel and perforated for better airflow.
Layer #4—Premium Memory Foam (2.5″): The second comfort layer is high-density, high-quality memory foam that contours to your body shape. Saatva calls this the “body-hugging layer.”
Layer #5—Foam Transition Layer (2″): This layer of polyfoam determines the firmness of the mattress; it’s softer and easier to compress in the Relaxed Firm version, and firmer in the Firm version. Regardless of its firmness level, it keeps you from sinking too far into the mattress.
Layer #6—Foam Base Layer (5.5″): A thick layer of high-density foam supports all the layers above it.

Addressing Loom & Leaf Mattress Complaints
Too Firm
Some customers complained that the Loom & Leaf mattress was too firm for their liking. They didn’t specify whether they bought the Gentle Firm or Firm option. Regardless, if your mattress is firmer than expected, you can return or exchange it during the trial period. After the trial period, consider adding a soft topper.
Caused Back Pain
A small number of reviewers said that the Loom & Leaf began causing back pain after the trial period ended. This is definitely the exception, not the rule. When ordering your new mattress, make sure you factor in your primary sleeping position(s) and body type. Stomach sleepers need a firm mattress, and side sleepers need extra pressure relief.
Comparing Different Saatva Mattresses
Loom & Leaf vs. Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic is a pillowtop mattress made with a foam topper and two layers of coils. It’s offered in three firmnesses: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. As a coil-based mattress with no memory foam, it has a very different feel than the Loom & Leaf. It’s springier, sleeps cooler, and doesn’t conform as closely to the body.
The Firm versions of either the Saatva or Loom & Leaf work for stomach sleepers and back sleepers who like an extra-firm feel. Lightweight side sleepers probably won’t get enough pressure relief on either bed, but average-weight folks should do well with the Plush Soft Saatva or Gentle Firm Loom & Leaf. Heavier side sleepers should stick with the more supportive Saatva.

Loom & Leaf vs. Zenhaven
The Zenhaven is a flippable latex mattress by Saatva. It has a Luxury Plush side and Gentle Firm side. The Luxury Plush side is softer than the Relaxed Firm Loom & Leaf, and the Gentle Firm side is a touch softer than the Firm Loom & Leaf. Also, the Zenhaven is less conforming and more buoyant, since latex is a lighter, springier material than memory foam.
The Loom & Leaf is the clear choice for those who want the contouring of memory foam. Hot sleepers will appreciate the naturally cool, temperature-regulating properties of latex in the Zenhaven. Latex is a more expensive material than memory foam, so the Zenhaven costs around $600 more than the Loom & Leaf. However, latex is more durable..
Made by Saatva, the Zenaven mattress is a unique latex mattress, unique because you can flip it to change the feel of it. One side is a plush, soft layer and the other is a gentle firm layer.

Loom & Leaf vs. Saatva Solaire
The Solaire is Saatva’s airbed mattress. It’s the most customizable mattress offered by the brand, coming with 50 different firmness settings. The base is a vulcanized air chamber (two chambers for couples with the Queen size or larger). The comfort layers include a 3″ pillow top, a 1″ latex layer, and a 2″ gel memory foam layer.
With so many firmness levels, the Solaire works for all sleeping positions and body types, but it’s not cheap. The Loom & Leaf costs over $1,000 less than the Solaire, so it’s the clear choice for budget-conscious shoppers. The Solaire is better for those who want to invest in a luxury mattress that will last decades.
The Saatva Solaire is made for sleepers who want customizable firmness to suit their specific sleeping preferences. With 50 unique firmness settings and pressure absorbing memory foam, you'd be hard pressed to not get a great sleep on this bed.

Comparing Loom & Leaf to the Competition
Loom & Leaf vs. Casper
The original Casper is a memory foam mattress by bed-in-a-box brand Casper. It’s a low cost alternative to luxury memory foam beds. On average, the Casper is around $400 cheaper than the Loom & Leaf, though it’s simpler and made with standard materials (i.e. no organic cotton or fancy gel lumbar pads).
Even with a simple three-layer construction, the Casper performed well in our lab tests, and matched the Loom & Leaf for motion isolation, temperature, and pressure relief. As such, it’s a great option for those who want a reliable memory foam mattress at a budget-conscious price. The Loom & Leaf is better for luxury shoppers, those who want higher-end materials, and those who want a longer warranty (Lifetime vs. Casper’s 10-year warranty).
The original mattress that made the brand famous, the Casper is known for suiting all sleep positions. Casper's Zoned Support feature is engineered to support the hips, shoulders, and back to keep the spine aligned. And at an affordable price point, this mattress is hard to beat.
We recommend this mattress for the following sleeper types: Financing options are available for this mattress. "From the delivery of the box to the magical unfolding of the king size mattress to the first time laying on the bed, all smiles here! I have traveled for work for years, often sleeping on different beds at different hotels night after night."

Loom & Leaf vs. Tempur-Pedic
Tempur-Pedic offers a large collection of luxury memory foam mattresses, and we’ll focus on the TEMPUR-Cloud here. The Cloud is Tempur-Pedic’s only bed-in-a-box mattress. It has a medium firmness and can be ordered as either an all-foam or hybrid mattress (with coils at the base of the bed).
The biggest difference between the Loom & Leaf and TEMPUR-Cloud is construction. The all-foam Cloud has a simple three-layer foam construction, while the Loom & Leaf has four foam layers, an extra lumbar support pad, and foam quilted into the cover. Performance-wise, the Loom & Leaf competes with Tempur-Pedic’s other models, like the Adapt or PROAdapt, but it’s pricing more closely resembles that of the Cloud.
Overall, the Loom & Leaf is an excellent lower cost alternative to Tempur-Pedic’s more expensive models. The TEMPUR-Cloud is fair competition for the Relaxed Firm Loom & Leaf, but it doesn’t come in a firmer option. In this comparison, we say go for the Loom & Leaf unless you’re committed to the Tempur-Pedic name.
The Tempur-Cloud is a more affordable Tempur-Pedic mattress. The foams are slow moving, so side sleepers will sink into the memory foam layers. It will easily absorb motion so couples sleep undisturbed.

Loom & Leaf vs. Nectar
Nectar is a budget-friendly bed-in-a-box mattress brand. Their flagship mattress, the original Nectar, is a memory foam bed with a medium-firmness. It’s an excellent choice for side sleepers under 230 lbs and back sleepers who like a softer, more conforming feel. However, it’s firmness and basic construction aren’t quite supportive enough for heavyweight sleepers, who should go with the Loom & Leaf. The Nectar is also more affordable than the Loom & Leaf.
The Nectar is a value memory foam mattress that excels at providing pressure relief and minimizing motion transfer. The medium-firm feel is ideal for cradling pressure points. Plus, it comes with a yearlong trial period and Lifetime warranty.

Loom & Leaf FAQs
How Durable is the Loom & Leaf?
According to Saatva's website, their mattresses are constructed to last anywhere from 10-15 years. Each mattress is made to order and delivered directly to your home.
How is Loom & Leaf less expensive than Tempurpedic?
Since Saatva is the only retailer, there is no additional cost for rent, commission, traditional marketing, and inventory inefficiencies.
How long will the Loom & Leaf last?
Saatva estimates that the Loom & Leaf will last you 10 to 15 years, which is longer than average for memory foam mattresses. They warrant the Loom & Leaf for a Lifetime, which tells you how long they think this product should last before showing signs of wear, like permanent body impressions.
Does the Loom & Leaf work for heavy people?
Technically, yes, the Loom & Leaf works for heavy people (which we define as those over 230 lbs). We even recommend it to heavyweight back and side sleepers. It's not the best fit for heavier stomach sleepers and those who want a really durable mattress, since it lacks support coils.
Is the Loom & Leaf mattress flippable?
No, the Loom & Leaf is a one-sided mattress, but it's offered in two different firmness levels: Relaxed Firm and Firm. If youu're interested in a flippable memory foam mattress, check out the Layla mattress. Also, Saatva offers a flippable latex mattress the Zenhaven, which has medium-soft and medium-firm sides.
The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?
The Loom & Leaf feels like a traditional memory foam mattress: it conforms closely to your body and cushions pressure points (especially in the Relaxed Firm model). Side sleepers should go with the Relaxed Firm, though lightweight folks will need an even softer mattress to get sufficient pressure relief.
Stomach sleepers will get the support they need on the Firm option, but heavier individuals will probably need an even firmer mattress, particularly one with a coil base layer. Back sleepers will fare well on either firmness option.
The Loom & Leaf isolates motion really well, which is a plus for couples and those who share their bed. It does retain some body heat, so hot sleepers may want to choose a hybrid mattress with memory foam comfort layers instead. While the Loom & Leaf isn’t a budget item, it’s durable, is warranted for a Lifetime, and comes with a 365-night trial period.
