Side sleepers need all of those characteristics because the bed must curve around their shoulders and hips, the widest and heaviest parts of the body, while still supporting the lower back. Too plush and the lower back may sink. Too firm and you’re feeling too much pressure at the shoulders and hips. Anything that disrupts the straight line of your spine is bad for business. Side sleepers generally like a foam-coil hybrid when it has a medium feel. The 8-inch version is medium-firm while the 10-inch version has a medium feel. Depending on your weight, either could work for a side sleeper. The Latex hybrid, another medium-firm mattress, may also work, especially if you’re a side sleeper carrying more weight on your body.
Back Sleepers
RECOMMENDED: 8-inch Linenspa Memory Foam Coil Hybrid or Latex Hybrid
Sleeping on your back is best for your body since your spine can rest more naturally. Back sleepers specifically need contouring for the neck and spine and support at the lower back and posterior to keep that healthy position. Medium, medium-firm and firm (for heavier sleepers) can work for back sleepers because they can keep your spine from dipping too low into the mattress. You run the risk of putting too much stress on your back when you sleep on your stomach. It’s an unnatural position since your weight rests on your chest (lungs), stomach and hips (spine) all night long. Hips especially should not too far down or you run the risk of creating an arch in your lower spine.
