The Mattress Nerd’s Take: The Level Sleep Mattress is designed specifically for those sleepers who wake up (and go to sleep) with back pain. Here at Mattress Nerd, we think this is a great mattress to try if you’re looking for back pain relief. Back Sleepers
The Level Sleep mattress should be a great fit for those who sleep on their back because the zoned mattress layer will support their spine and keep their hips elevated. For back sleepers, it’s important to maintain spinal alignment by ensuring that no part of the body—especially heavier parts like the hips and shoulders—dip too deeply into the mattress. The Level Sleep is specifically designed to ensure spinal alignment. It’s also backed by chiropractors and real-life customers who say it works wonders for their back pain. Whether you’re a lightweight, average-weight or plus-size sleeper, you should be able to rest easy on your back with the Level Sleep.
Stomach Sleepers
Though this mattress is specifically designed to help ease back pain in most sleeping positions, we’re concerned that the layers of foam in the Level Sleep simply won’t be enough to support the hips of some stomach sleepers. Stomach sleepers need adequate elevation of their hips throughout the night to encourage spinal alignment, and the hip and leg zone of the Level Sleep’s TriSupport foam comfort layer is not firm but rather a “medium” firmness. Especially for heavier and average-weight stomach sleepers, we recommend finding a firm mattress that will offer support and spinal comfort. For lightweight sleepers, this mattress could be enough to keep your hips elevated and your spine aligned.
Side Sleepers
We’ll be honest: It’s a bit unusual to find a mattress that works great for both back sleepers and side sleepers. But with its signature TriSupport zoned support foam, Level Sleep has managed to accommodate both back and side sleepers of all body types who need both support and pressure relief. Sections like the head and hip areas are a little softer to allow more cradling, while the torso zone keeps you elevated with an extra level of firmness.
Combination Sleepers
If you’re a combination sleeper—meaning you toss and turn into different sleeping positions throughout the night—the responsiveness and all-around support of the Level Sleep TriSupport mattress should leave you feeling refreshed and aligned. The mattress offers lumbar support for the time you spend on your back, and it’ll cradle delicate pressure points when you switch over to your side. Though you shouldn’t choose this mattress if you’re a heavyweight sleeper who spends any part of the night on your stomach, lightweight and average-weight combination sleepers should enjoy this bed.
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs.) | 5 | 3 | 5 |
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs.) | 5 | 2 | 5 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs.) | 4 | 2 | 4 |
1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

How Does the Level Sleep Mattress Feel?
Responsiveness, Bounce and Ease of Movement
The two foam layers in the Level Sleep are responsive, meaning that you won’t get a sinking feeling when you lie down on the bed. With other materials—memory foam, for instance—that might be more of a concern. The responsiveness of the Level Sleep mattress means you’ll be able to move around easily, change positions, and get up in the morning without feeling like you’re stuck in the mattress.
How Firm is This Mattress?
Here at Mattress Nerd, we’re usually able to put a finger on the exact firmness level of a mattress. But the Level Sleep is built with three levels of firmness throughout the length of the mattress, each designed to accommodate different zones of the body. It is softer around the head, neck and shoulders where you need more contouring. But it’s firm along the torso to support your spine, and medium-firm to cushion the hips and legs. This makes the mattress a good choice for pretty much all sleep styles. Still, plus-size sleepers should probably choose a mattress that has some extra support.
Does It Sleep Hot?
The memory foam in the top layer of the mattress is made in an open cell construction, which facilitates airflow and enhances the breathability of the mattress. The denser foam base is also breathable, as is the fabric cover. Still, any all-foam mattress (especially memory foam mattresses) will tend to sleep hotter than an innerspring or a hybrid bed. If you tend to sleep exceptionally hot, or if cooling capabilities are your No. 1 consideration in a mattress, you should take a look at other cooling mattresses.
Is the Level Sleep Mattress Good For Couples?
If you sleep with a partner, child or even a pet, it’s important to select a mattress that isolates motion and keeps you from being awakened by someone else’s mid-sleep shifting (or midnight snack runs).
Because the Level Sleep is an all-foam construction, it dampens motion transfer well. Unless you’re an exceptionally light sleeper, there’s little chance you’ll lose sleep over a partner’s tossing and turning.
How’s the Edge Support?
One primary complaint about the Level Sleep is that the edge support isn’t top-notch. For those who aren’t familiar, “edge support” is how well a mattress supports body weight at its perimeter, or around the edge of the mattress. When a sleeper sits right on the edge of the Level Sleep—for instance, to tie their shoes or get out of bed—they may notice some sinking.
However, edge support typically gets better when someone lies on the edge of the bed rather than sitting on it. The Level Sleep is no exception here, and we don’t think sleepers will feel as if they’re about to roll right off the mattress when they lie on the edge.
Construction: What’s Under the surface?
The Level Sleep uses a fairly simple construction, with just two layers of foam protected by a fabric cover. But it’s the detail of the Level Sleep’s top layer of comfort foam that gives this bed its back-cradling, chiropractor-approved characteristics. That 3″ performance layer is made with different thicknesses of foam that cradle and support parts of your body precisely.
Layer #1: Breathable Fabric Cover
Though this fabric cover doesn’t have any extra cooling measures, it feels stretchy and is removable for easy washing.
Layer #2: 3″ Performance Layer
This layer of open-cell memory foam is made up of three zones: For the head and shoulders, the foam is soft to cushion the shoulders. For the torso, the foam is firm so that it supports your lower back. For the hips and legs, the foam is medium firm, which has enough cushion to cradle the hips to keep them aligned with the rest of the spine, which is especially crucial for side sleepers. This zoned support design can help reduce back pain by supporting the parts of the body that need it, while allowing other areas to sink into the mattress. Of note, Level Sleep uses CertiPUR-US certified foam, which means it has been tested to meet CertiPUR-US rigorous standards for emissions, content, performance and durability. Specifically, it’s made without chemicals such as ozone depleters, flame retardants, mercury, lead and other heavy metals.
Layer #3: Base Layer
This dense, sturdy 7″ layer of high-resilience polyurethane foam will keep the mattress supported as you sleep and prevent sagging over time.
How Much Does the Level Sleep Cost?

How Do the Policies Measure Up?
Shipping & Unboxing
If you decide to order a new mattress from Level Sleep, shipping won’t cost you a dime as long as you live in the contiguous United States. If you live in Alaska or Hawaii, you’ll have to pay an additional fee. Financing is also available through Affirm, which you can decide to take advantage of during the checkout process.
The Level Sleep comes shipped as a bed-in-a-box mattress and comes delivered straight to your door. You may need a few extra hands to help you unbox it and set it up, especially if you already suffer with back pain.
Warranty
Level Sleep offers a lifetime warranty, called the “Forever Warranty,” that protects the bed against damage and defects in construction and materials. The warranty lasts as long as the original purchaser of the mattress still owns it. Here at Mattress Nerd, we consider it one of the most competitive warranties in the mattress industry. It’s an exceptional warranty that backs up a high-quality, well-respected mattress.
Trial Period & Returns
The Level Sleep comes with a 365-night sleep trial period. This means you have an entire year to test this bed and see if it’s right for you before deciding to keep it. If you want to try a different mattress during that year, you can return the Level Sleep for a full refund. The company will pick up the mattress from your home for free. If you need to start the refund or exchange process, call Level Sleep customer service at +1 (888) 618 2622.
Comparing the Level Sleep Mattress
Level Sleep vs. Casper
Just like the Level Sleep, the original Casper mattress also boasts three zones of support: softer foam around the shoulders to provide relief for pressure points at the top of the body and firmer foam around the hips, waist and lower back to help align the spine.
However, the feel of these two mattresses is much different. Our expert testers found that the Level Sleep’s three targeted zones are much more pronounced than with the Casper. For example, the Level Sleep’s shoulder zone is much softer than the firm lumbar area. Thus, we think it might take sleepers longer to grow accustomed to the Level Sleep’s zoned construction.
The original mattress that made the brand famous, the Casper is known for suiting all sleep positions. Casper's Zoned Support feature is engineered to support the hips, shoulders, and back to keep the spine aligned. And at an affordable price point, this mattress is hard to beat.
We recommend this mattress for the following sleeper types: Financing options are available for this mattress. "From the delivery of the box to the magical unfolding of the king size mattress to the first time laying on the bed, all smiles here! I have traveled for work for years, often sleeping on different beds at different hotels night after night."

Level Sleep vs. Zenhaven
While both of these mattresses offer ergonomically zoned support, they are very different in style and feel. The Level Sleep’s zoned TriSupport system runs the length of the mattress, with a softer zone at the head, neck and shoulders; a firmer zone to support the lumbar area; and a medium-firm zone to cushion, yet support, the hips. The goal is to keep the spine aligned in a natural “S” curve and avoid back pain.
The Zenhaven is flippable, with a plush, firm mattress on one side and a firm mattress on the other. Unlike the Level Sleep’s foam construction, the Zenhaven is crafted from all-natural latex, so it will have a much more responsive, bouncy feel than the cradling sensation of foam. Typically, foam mattresses also have less motion transfer, thus the Level Sleep is better for couples, as well as those on a budget. The Zenhaven is by Saatva and comes with a heftier price tag to pay for all of its all-natural materials, such as wool sourced from New Zealand. So the environmentally conscious will appreciate Saatva’s efforts to construct a nearly 100 percent organic mattress.
Made by Saatva, the Zenaven mattress is a unique latex mattress, unique because you can flip it to change the feel of it. One side is a plush, soft layer and the other is a gentle firm layer.

Level Sleep vs. Purple
Unlike the Level Sleep, the Purple mattress does not have targeted ergonomic support zones. The Purple’s claim to fame is its unprecedented construction: Its comfort layer consists of two inches of Hyper-Elastic Polymer foam in a grid structure that is malleable and can cradle the body in a distinct way.
The Purple mattress has a medium-firm feel throughout the area of the mattress, which could be problematic for side sleepers who require more cushioning at the shoulders and hips to keep their spine in lateral alignment. Level Sleep works for both back sleepers and side sleepers given its unique TriSupport zoned support system, with a softer zone at the head, neck and shoulders; a firmer zone to support the lumbar area; and a medium-firm zone to cushion, yet support, the hips.
The Purple mattress is temperature-neutral with a floating feel, thanks to its 2" Purple Grid and dual-layered comfort foam base. The Purple Grid is made with hyper-elastic polymer, which is a gel-like substance that provides lots of pressure relief.

Level Sleep Mattress FAQs
Does the Level Sleep mattress have a smell or off-gas when you unbox it?
You may smell an odor for a few hours or even a few days after you open the mattress, and according to their website, this is only natural. This smell is not due to any harmful chemicals; it comes from the fact that the foam is new and packaged in plastic for shipping. We suggest opening a window in the room and turning on fans to help alleviate any odors.
What setup is recommended for a Level Sleep mattress?
The company recommends keeping the mattress off the ground to allow for maximum breathability and airflow. Thankfully, the mattress is able to fit most bed frames, box springs and bases. Keeping the mattress elevated off the ground also helps when it comes to cleaning.
Does Level Sleep's TriSupport system work effectively if my partner and I are very different sizes?
The topper works best for those who are between 4'2" and 7' in height. As long as you both fit between these heights, the three zones of support should work for you.
What’s the Bottom Line?
The Level Sleep mattress promises to relieve pain that comes from sleeping on an old bed or selecting the wrong mattress. It actually promises to do the work a dose of ibuprofen or a chiropractor might do.
You likely won’t fumble around as much looking for the right position when your body is relaxed in a natural position. Chiropractors recommend it. Science says it will reduce pain by 56 percent, tossing and turning by nearly 35 percent and fatigue the following day by up to 43 percent. If you’re suffering with back pain, your primary focus will probably be on the spinal support the Level Sleep offers.
While the edge support and cooling capabilities of this mattress are its downsides, the bed’s innovative design—three different firmness levels along the length of the mattress to keep the spine aligned—has us convinced that this is truly one of the best mattresses on the market for back pain. With a full-year trial period to try out the mattress and a lifetime warranty to back it up, the Level Sleep is absolutely worth a try.
