Today, we’re going to compare the Midnight and Midnight Luxe mattresses from the popular Helix mattress brand. Both are hybrid mattresses that excel at cooling and giving support. However, they differ in certain aspects that make them the better option than the other.
In this mattress comparison, we’ll talk about everything you need to know about the Helix Midnight and Helix Midnight Luxe mattresses to see which one is best suited to you and your needs. For more details on how we test and review mattresses, read up on our testing methodology.
Here’s a brief overview of the main strengths of each mattress and which type of sleepers we think should consider each.

In this section, we’ll go into detail about how the Midnight and Midnight Luxe mattresses compare against others in terms of firmness and feel.
When choosing a mattress, one of the first things you should consider is the firmness level. Finding a mattress with a firmness level that can accommodate your preferred sleeping position can really enhance the level of support and comfort you feel when you sleep.
According to our mattress firmness scale, both the Midnight and Midnight Luxe got a score of 6/10 or a medium-firm rating. At this firmness level, we think that both mattresses are best suited to lightweight to average-weight sleepers.
Since both are hybrid mattresses from the same brand, there are no major differences between the Midnight and Midnight Luxe when it comes to feel. Both of them have a truly hybrid feel that balances the soft cushioning feel of the foam layers and the bouncy, responsive coil base. Lying down, we felt that we were sleeping on top of both mattresses instead of in them.
The only difference we felt was that the Midnight Luxe has a deeper cushioning feel because of its thicker profile. It also felt cooler to the touch compared to the Midnight model.
Overall, we think that the Helix Midnight and Helix Midnight Luxe are best suited to lightweight and average-weight sleepers. Both mattresses may work for some heavier folks, but most will probably not get enough support and comfort from either mattress.
Out of all the sleeping positions, back sleepers are the ones who get the most support and comfort. Make no mistake, though — both Midnight models can accommodate stomach, side, and combination sleepers as well. However, for those looking for a plusher top layer and a bit more lumbar support, we recommend the Midnight Luxe.
Helix Midnight Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 4 | 4 | 5 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 4 | 3 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 3 | 3 | 4 |
Helix Midnight Luxe Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 4 | 4 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 5 | 3 | 5 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 4 | 3 | 4 |
Average-weight back sleepers will sleep comfortably on both Midnight models since they both bring a great combination of support and pressure relief. However, the Luxe model does have noticeably better back support than the standard version. Similarly, both mattresses also offer great pressure relief for side sleepers, but we think the Luxe model provides a plusher, softer feel that strict side sleepers will appreciate.
Some stomach sleepers may sleep well on both mattresses, but we think the others feel some pressure build-up around the hips later on. We recommend firmer and more supportive options, the choices in our best mattresses for stomach sleepers. Average-weight combination sleepers will have no issues getting either mattress since they both offer great responsiveness thanks to their springy coil base.
For heavyweight back sleepers, we recommend the Midnight Luxe for its enhanced lumbar support and zoned support system. Heavier side sleepers will also probably like the plusher Luxe model, but the standard Midnight mattress should still be able to provide enough pressure relief.
For heavyweight stomach sleepers, we recommend looking for a firmer mattress, as both mattresses struggled to keep the hips lifted and in proper alignment. As for combination sleepers, both mattresses are a good pick, though some may experience some excess sinking.
Lightweight back sleepers will get plenty of comfort and support from both the Midnight and Midnight Luxe mattresses. The same goes for lightweight side sleepers, but some may feel like they would want a softer version. Back sleepers should also get adequate pressure relief and hip support from both mattresses. Combination sleepers who toss and turn a lot at night will have no difficulty moving around on either mattress.
The standard Helix Midnight is a 12” hybrid mattress, while the Luxe version stands taller at 14”. Here’s a closer look at their differences in terms of mattress construction.

If you’re a hot sleeper looking for a cooling mattress, then you’re in luck. Both the Midnight and Midnight Luxe offer excellent cooling features to help dissipate heat and wick sweat away.
Both mattresses have individually pocketed coil bases that promote airflow, but the Luxe version gets the upper hand in cooling thanks to its breathable TENCEL cover and cooling gel-infused comfort layers.
If you’re sharing your bed with someone, there’s probably been a time when you’ve woken because of your partner’s movements. If you want to avoid that in the future, you’ll want a mattress with low motion transfer.
Overall, the Midnight and Midnight Luxe mattresses have very low motion transfer, probably due to their thick foam layers and pocketed coil base. So for couples, co-sleepers, or sleepers who share a bed with their pet, both Helix mattresses are great choices.
A mattress with great edge support will allow you to maximize your mattress space. It’s also beneficial if you have mobility issues and need extra support when getting in and out of bed. Sitting or lying down on the sides of a mattress with little to no edge support will have you falling off easily.
Fortunately, both Helix mattresses scored great when it came to edge support, especially since they have similar constructions. The individually pocketed coil layers reinforce the edges of the bed, making them sturdy and balanced. Our team found no issues lying down or sitting on the edges of both mattresses.
In terms of pressure relief, both the Midnight and Midnight Luxe showed similar results. That is, both mattresses scored well on our pressure map tests. There was minimal pressure build-up for the back. But we did notice some build-up around the shoulder and hip area. This is probably due to its medium-firm profile.
Pain relief is directly related to pressure relief. When pressure builds up in a certain part, there’s a chance that that part may experience body pains and aches. If you’re suffering from body and joint pain, you should look for a mattress with excellent pain relief.
Depending on your sleeping position, you’ll need a different type of pain relief. Back and stomach sleepers will want a mattress that’s firm enough to keep the back and hips lifted and supported. Side sleepers need a mattress that will cushion and cradle pressure points on the shoulder and hip. That said, both mattresses are great for relieving back and joint pain. However, we felt that lightweight sleepers should find plusher mattress options for better pain relief.
Since both are hybrid mattresses from the same brand, they are very similar in terms of durability. Like most hybrid mattresses, expect your Midnight and Midnight Luxe mattresses to last you around seven to 10 years, depending on how well you clean and maintain them. Fortunately, the standard Midnight version comes with a 10-year warranty while the Luxe version comes with a longer 15-year warranty.
The Helix Midnight ships free across the U.S. The mattress model also comes with a 100-night sleep trial with a 10-year warranty that covers full refunds.
Since they’re from the same company, the Helix Midnight Luxe also ships free across the contiguous U.S. with an extra fee of $250 for orders to Canada. It also comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a longer 15-year warranty with full refunds.
If you’re in the market for a hybrid mattress with low motion transfer that sleeps cool, both the Helix Midnight and Midnight Luxe make attractive options. However, if you’re on a budget, the Midnight is your better bet. If you’re a heavyweight back or side sleeper, though, it makes sense to splurge on the Midnight Luxe.
Yes, you can place the Helix Midnight mattress on any solid surface. Just know that some traditional box springs may not be supportive enough for the Helix Midnight. For your peace of mind, make sure you use a stable and durable foundation for your mattress.
Although we rated it at 6/10 (medium firm) in terms of firmness, it depends on your body type. If you’re a lightweight or average-weight sleeper (<230 lbs), the Helix Midnight Luxe will feel medium-firm. But if you’re a heavyweight sleeper, you’ll probably feel that it’s too soft and sinking.
Like most hybrid mattresses, expect your Helix mattress to last you for 7 to 10 years. You can get the most out of your Helix mattress through regular cleaning and proper maintenance. We also recommend you rotate your mattress every three to six months to prevent any sagging.
