Is the Helix Midnight Mattress for You?

Who’s Going to Love the Helix Midnight Mattress

  • Side sleepers of all body types—lightweight (< 130 lbs), average-weight (130–230 lbs), and heavyweight (> 230 lbs)
  • Couples
  • Memory foam lovers concerned about overheating
  • Value shoppers

Who Should Steer Clear of the Helix Midnight Mattress

  • Heavyweight back sleepers and stomach sleepers—instead, choose a bed that’s firmer and thicker, like the Helix Plus mattress.
  • Combination sleepers—instead, the Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress is very responsive and earned a perfect score for ease of movement.
  • Fans of extra soft or extra firm mattresses—instead, we recommend the Helix Moonlight mattress for those who like a plush feel and the Plank mattress for those who like extra firmness and support.

The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?

The Helix Midnight mattress works best for lightweight to average-weight back and side sleepers. Some stomach sleepers may crave a firmer feel, but it should adequately support those under 230 lbs. Heavyweight sleepers should try the Helix Plus. Couples are likely to appreciate the excellent edge support and motion isolation.

If you’re more of a visual person, check out our video review of the Helix Midnight. One of our editors, Loren, breaks down how this bed performs in key areas and lets you know who it’s best for.

Helix Midnight Mattress Firmness and Feel

Helix Midnight Mattress Firmness

At Mattress Nerd, we rate mattresses from 1–10 on the firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest. We scored the Helix Midnight as a 6/10, which means it has a medium-firm feel for the average sleeper

People of different weights will register firmness levels differently: lightweight folks feel mattresses to be a bit firmer, while heavyweight people tend to feel more hugged on mattresses than lightweight sleepers.

Check out our top picks for the best firm mattresses.

What Does the Helix Midnight Mattress Feel Like?

The Midnight has a true hybrid feel; in other words, it feels like a hotel bed—cushioning on top that’s balanced by a supportive, springy coil base. You’ll sink an inch or two into the memory foam top layer and feel the foam contouring around your curves. The coils below keep you lifted on top of the mattress.

What Sleeping Position Is the Helix Midnight Best For?

Body Type:BACK SLEEPERSSTOMACH SLEEPERSSIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): 445
Average-weight (130–230 lbs):445
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 334

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

The Helix Midnight offers a great balance of comfort and support for back sleepers. Neither our lightweight tester nor our average-weight tester felt any pressure while lying on their backs. This bed might not work as well for heavyweight back sleepers, but Helix has a bed designed especially for these folks: the Helix Plus.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers sometimes find that medium-firm mattresses are too soft to support their lower back. Fortunately, that’s not as much of an issue with the Helix Midnight

Our lightweight and average-weight testers reported no lower back arching when they were positioned on their stomachs, but a heavyweight sleeper might experience too much hip sinkage. Instead, they should check out mattresses for stomach sleepers, including the Helix Dusk or Helix Dawn.

Side Sleepers

The Helix Midnight was designed for side sleepers of all weights. The middle layer of the bed supports the contours of your body, allowing the shoulders and the hips to nestle into the bed.

Our in-lab testing proved this: When our lightweight tester positioned herself on her side, our pressure reader found no weight buildup under her major pressure points. When our average-weight tester laid on his side, the pressure reader only found minimal pressure buildup in his shoulders.

The bed’s contouring also promotes lateral spinal alignment in lightweight, average-weight and heavyweight side sleepers. When your spine is supported correctly, you have less back pain and achiness in the morning. We also favor the Helix Midnight Luxe, Helix Sunset, and Helix Moonlight for side sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

The Helix Midnight has a memory foam top layer that slows the bed down when it comes to responsiveness. That means it may be hard for lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight combination sleepers to change positions throughout the night.

If you enjoy sleeping more “on top” of your mattress so you can easily roll around, you may want to choose a mattress with a latex or polyfoam top layer. For a few of our favorite options, check out the best mattresses for combination sleepers

Helix Midnight Mattress Performance

Is The Helix Midnight Mattress Cooling?

The Helix Midnight possesses two qualities to help keep you cool at night. First, it features a soft, breathable cover that encourages airflow. Next, it’s a hybrid mattress, so the individual coils at the base enhance breathability throughout the whole mattress.

With that said, the memory foam layer on top of the mattress is not gel infused, which means it may not be the best cooling mattress for extra hot sleepers.

Edge Support

Edge support is important if you need to maximize your mattress space or need easy mobility getting in and out of bed. Members of our team felt especially secure sitting and lying along the edges of the Helix Midnight. This mattress features a layer of individually wrapped coils that provide extra reinforcement around the perimeter of the bed, which means excellent overall edge support.

Responsiveness

The Helix Midnight has a classic, slow-to-respond memory foam feel in the top layers of foam. One of our reviewers reported the foam top to be reminiscent of a Tempur-Pedic mattress. That said, the bed is not going to be the easiest to move around on—which is important to note for those who have mobility issues or change sleep positions at night.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

Motion isolation is the mattress’s ability to limit the spread of movement from one side of the bed to the other. This is important if you sleep with a partner or pet. We tested the Helix Midnight in our lab and found very little motion transfer across the surface of the mattress, probably due to the dense memory foam comfort layer.

Check out our top picks for the best mattresses for couples.

Noise

The Midnight is a fairly quiet mattress. The coils at the base of the bed are individually wrapped, not interconnected, so you won’t get the squeaking that’s characteristic of old-school innerspring mattresses.

Pain Relief

The amount of pain relief (or prevention) you’ll get from your mattress depends primarily on your sleeping position. To prevent back pain, all sleepers need good sleeping posture (AKA spinal alignment).

Stomach and back sleepers need enough firmness to keep their hips lifted on top of the mattress, and side sleepers need enough cushion to allow their hips and shoulders to sink into the mattress.

The Midnight should at least prevent new back pain for everyone besides heavyweight back and stomach sleepers. The Midnight is also pressure-relieving enough for most folks with joint pain to sleep comfortably.

Check out our top picks for the best mattresses for back pain

Sex

If you want a good mattress for sex, look for temperature regulation and bounce. The Midnight has the bounce and breathability of coils, but the foam layers will cause a little heat retention and make changing positions a little more work.

Off-Gassing

We noticed a slight off-gassing smell after unboxing our Helix Midnight, but it faded quickly. This odor resembles a “new car” smell, and is common with new mattresses that include foam.

Durability

As a hybrid mattress, we expect the Midnight to have a lifespan of 7–8 years. Pocketed coils are generally a durable material, but memory foam may develop body impressions after years of use. If your mattress develops any material defects, consult the Helix mattress warranty to see if you’re eligible for a replacement.

HELIX MIDNIGHT CONSTRUCTION

Helix Midnight Construction: What’s It Made Of?

The Helix Midnight is made with high-grade materials—from its soft fabric cover and comfort foams to the wrapped coil support layer. It stands 12” tall and comes in all standard mattress sizes.

*The construction listed below has been updated to reflect the most recent Helix Midnight model. The photo above is of the previous model.

Layer #1 Soft, Stretchy Mattress Cover: Every Helix mattress comes with their proprietary “Breathe Knit” cover, which has a light, stretchy feel. The fabric is also optimized for airflow, which should appeal to hot sleepers looking for extra cooling capabilities in their new mattress. You can upgrade to a cooling cover or pillow top as well.

Layer #2 Memory Plus FoamBeneath the cover is a 2” layer of Helix’s proprietary Memory Plus Foam, which has a medium firmness. This foam is designed to relieve pressure on the joints, such as the shoulders and the hips.

Layer #3 Responsive Foam: Below the initial foam layer, there’s another layer of firm foam that aids in responsiveness so that you stay buoyant and elevated on the mattress surface, instead of feeling like you’re sinking into the middle.

Layer #4 Transition Layer: The last layer of foam is a transition layer, between the comfort foams the coil support core, for added stability and elevation.

Layer #5 Individually Wrapped CoilsHundreds of individually wrapped coils cradle your body and provide added support. The Helix Midnight also has a reinforced perimeter for added edge support, which is great for couples who like to spread out along the edges of the bed. Individually wrapping each coil helps cut down on motion transfer, so you shouldn’t disturb your partner too much if you’re a restless sleeper.

Layer #6 Base Layer: To preserve the integrity of the mattress, the Midnight features a base layer of DuraDense foam. This base layer provides stability and helps to extend the life of the mattress.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

As an online mattress company, Helix Sleep uses the bed-in-a-box method to ship their mattresses. All Helix mattresses are made in the U.S. and ship for free anywhere in the country. The Queen size weighs around 90 lbs, so you may need to enlist the help of a friend to unbox it.

For set up: unroll the vacuum-sealed mattress on your bed frame and carefully cut away the plastic packaging. It took our Nerd team less than two minutes to unbox the Helix Midnight, which is an average unwrap time. Keep your room ventilated for a day or two if the mattress has an off-gassing odor.

Warranty

The Helix Midnight comes with a 10-year limited warranty. This Helix mattress warranty extends only to the original purchaser of the mattress, so you should keep a copy of your receipt as proof of purchase. The Helix Luxe models are covered by a 15-year warranty.

The warranty covers defects such as indentations over 1”, but not subjective preferences like firmness or pressure relief. If your warranty claim is approved, you’ll initially be responsible for shipping costs associated with mattress repair or replacement, but Helix Sleep will reimburse you up to $100.

Trial Period & Returns

The Helix Midnight comes with a 100-night sleep trial that begins on the day it’s delivered. If your Helix bed isn’t a good fit, you can return it for a full refund within the 100-night trial period

Typically, the body takes about a month to adjust to a new bed. As such, Helix requires a 30-day break-in period before you can return a mattress. That means you technically have 70 nights to decide if the Midnight is the right mattress model for your needs.

Note: The trial period and return policy may be different for mattresses bought on Amazon.com.

Addressing Helix Midnight Mattress Complaints

Too Firm

Some customers were expecting a softer mattress and were disappointed with the firmness level of the Midnight. One in particular said she developed hip pain after sleeping on the bed.

Helix advertises the Midnight as a mattress with a medium firmness between 4–7/10 on the firmness scale. If you weigh less than 130 lbs, the Midnight may feel closer to 7/10. If you still aren’t sleeping comfortably after 30 nights, consider changing the Midnight for a softer Helix mattress, like the Helix Sunset.

Sleeps Hot

We noticed a few complaints about overheating on the Helix Midnight. While it’s not the coolest mattress we’ve tested, it’s also not the hottest. The coil base layer should allow for a fair amount of airflow under the memory foam layer. Still, if you tend to sleep hot or live in a warm climate, we recommend looking for a hybrid mattress without memory foam.

Lacks Edge Support

For some, the Helix Midnight lacks sufficient edge support. If you weigh more than 230 lbs, you’re more likely to sink down along the edges of the Midnight. For most folks, the edges should be supportive enough. We even gave it a perfect 5/5 score in this category.

Comparing Different Helix Mattresses

Helix Midnight vs. Helix Sunset

Helix Midnight Mattress is Best For:Helix Sunset Mattress is Best For:
Side SleepersSleepers Looking for a Softer Mattress
CouplesPeople Seeking Pressure Relief
Memory Foam LoversBack and Side Sleepers

While the Helix Midnight is a medium-firm mattress, the Helix Sunset mattress is decidedly on the softer side of the mattress firmness scale. Our team rates it around a 4/10. This firmness level is great for side sleepers and those who have sensitive joints.

The Helix Sunset uses two layers of foam to conform around the sleeper’s body and add extra comfort. For side sleepers, those soft layers are great news because they allow the hips to sink into the mattress and also keep the spine in proper alignment.

Helix Midnight vs. Helix Twilight

Helix Midnight Mattress is Best For:Helix Twilight Mattress is Best For:
Side SleepersShoppers Looking for a Firmer Mattress
CouplesAverage to Heavy-weight Stomach Sleepers
Memory Foam LoversBack Sleepers

The Helix Twilight mattress is an 8/10 on the firmness scale, meaning it’s on the firmer side. This firmness is great for back sleepers and stomach sleepers, both of whom need extra support to keep their bodies aligned on the bed. For extra edge support, the coils in this mattress are more supportive around the perimeter.

If you’re an average-weight or heavier stomach sleeper, our team thinks the Helix Twilight will work better for you than the Helix Midnight. On the other hand, the Midnight will serve side sleepers better than the Twilight because of its softer feel. If you’re a back sleeper, your personal firmness preferences will dictate which mattress feels best to you.

Helix Midnight vs. Helix Plus

Helix Midnight Mattress is Best For:Helix Plus Mattress is Best For:
Side SleepersShoppers Looking for a Supportive Mattress
CouplesHeavyweight Sleepers
Memory Foam LoversBack and Stomach Sleepers

If you have a heavyweight or plus size body type, you need a mattress that offers ample support for your body type and sleep position. Though the Helix Midnight works relatively well for heavyweight folks —especially those who prefer side sleeping—the Helix Plus goes above and beyond for this body type

The Plus is a 13” tall bed with reinforced, individually wrapped coils and supportive, firmer foam top layers. It’s more expensive than the Helix Midnight, but it’s more likely to work for heavier folks.

Comparing Helix to the Competition

Helix Midnight vs. DreamCloud

Helix Midnight Mattress is Best For:DreamCloud Mattress is Best For:
Side SleepersSleepers Looking for Medium-Firm Mattress
CouplesSleepers who Toss and Turn All Night
Memory Foam LoversBack Sleepers

The construction of the Helix Midnight and the DreamCloud mattresses are quite similar: Both use layers of foam over coils. The main difference? The Midnight is 12” thick and the DreamCloud is more plush with a 15” thickness. Both are also medium-firm, making them good for back sleepers and some side sleepers.

The Helix Midnight has a balanced foam feel, and the DreamCloud feels more like a traditional innerspring mattress with some added cushion. The former is best for side sleepers, and the latter is great for combination sleepers who change positions throughout the night. Regardless, both are high-quality mattresses that should last seven to 10 years.

Helix Midnight vs. Nectar

Helix Midnight Mattress is Best For:Nectar Mattress is Best For:
Side SleepersShoppers Looking for a “Hug Feel” Mattress
CouplesLight to Average-weight Sleepers
Hot SleepersSide Sleepers

The Helix Midnight and Nectar share a memory foam top layer, but are otherwise different. The Midnight is a hybrid mattress, so it has both coils and foam, whereas the Nectar is an all-foam mattress. As such, the Helix has a more responsive, buoyant feel, while the Nectar is slow-moving and has the hug of memory foam.

The Helix is more breathable, so it’s a better fit for hot sleepers. It’s also the better option for heavyweight folks. The Nectar should appeal to those who prefer being cradled by their bed, as well as side sleepers who want maximum cushioning.

Helix Midnight vs. Purple

Helix Midnight Mattress is Best For:Purple Mattress is Best For:
Side SleepersShoppers Looking for a “Floating Feel” Mattress
CouplesHot Sleepers
Memory Foam LoversHeavy-weight Sleepers

The best indication of how a mattress feels is its construction, and the materials in the Helix Midnight and the Purple are completely different. While the Midnight is a hybrid bed with foam situated over coils, the Purple features a Hyper-Elastic Polymer grid. One of our testers remarked that it’s like floating on top of water.

The mattresses have a similar firmness level (medium-firm). While both are quite durable, the Purple’s proprietary materials may last longer. We’d recommend the Helix for lightweight to average-weight side sleepers who prefer a more classic mattress, and the Purple for heavier side sleepers, hot sleepers, and those who embrace new, innovative materials.

Helix Midnight FAQs

How firm is the Helix Midnight mattress?

Helix says the Midnight mattress has a medium firmness that could feel softer or firmer to different people, depending on their body type and comfort preferences. We give the Helix Midnight a 6/10 firmness rating, which is a little firmer than average and a good fit for most sleepers.

Is Helix Sleep a good mattress company?

Yes! When Helix Sleep says they have mattresses designed for every body, they literally mean every body. Helix sells a wide range of beds, more than a half dozen versions from soft to firm, designed for every sleep position. Plus, they”re made in the U.S. and come with a generous trial period.

Does the Helix Midnight sleep hot?

We think the Helix Midnight stays temperature neutral, though if you sleep in a warm room, the memory foam layer may cause you to overheat. We always recommend keeping the temperature of your bedroom between 62-68 degrees and adjusting your bedding until you reach a comfortable temperature.

Is the Helix Midnight worth the price?
Yes. The Helix Midnight is an incredibly well-rounded mattress at a reasonable price. For a queen, the mattress is priced at less that $1,400 before sales and discounts.
Is the Helix Midnight a good option for heavy sleepers?
The Helix Midnight should work well for heavier side sleepers, but it likely isn’t supportive enough for heavy back sleepers or heavy stomach sleepers. Check out our best mattresses for heavy people for better options.
