Which Helix Sleep Mattress is Best for You?
Helix Sunset Mattress

Our Recommendation

The Sunset is the softest mattress in the Helix Sleep standard collection. It has the most traditional memory foam feel and contours around the body better than any other Helix standard mattress, making it one of the best mattress for side sleepers.
The Sunset’s comfort layer contains soft memory foam, so you’ll sink in and feel hugged, especially if you sleep on your side. Helix designed the bed to provide side sleeper support for petite body types, but average-weight sleepers who enjoy a very plush feel may find it comfortable as well.
Although it shares a similar firmness level to the Helix Moonlight, the Sunset has more of a “traditional” memory foam feel, while the Moonlight has a neutral foam feel, meaning that it doesn’t feel distinctly like memory foam. The Moonlight also provides a bit more support for petite back and stomach sleepers.
Who’s Going to Love the Helix Sunset Mattress
- Side sleepers
- Back sleepers with a lightweight (< 130 lbs) body type
- Those who want a plush, cloud-like mattress
- Couples
Who Should Steer Clear of the Helix Sunset Mattress
- Stomach sleepers
- Back sleepers with average-weight (130–230 lbs) and heavyweight (> 230 lbs) body types
- Combination sleepers

Our Recommendation
Financing Options
The Helix Moonlight mattress is advertised alongside the Sunset as having a “Soft Feel.” While it is soft, it doesn’t offer a sinking sensation that memory foam purists tend to enjoy. It uses the brand’s proprietary Helix Dynamic Foam in the comfort and transition layers, which together create a neutral, gentle buoyancy for the sleeper.
This bed is great for petite back and stomach sleepers, but we also recommend it as a mattress for combination sleepers who switch primarily between their back and stomach. The Helix Moonlight can also work for petite side sleepers who don’t enjoy a memory foam feel.
Who’s Going to Love the Helix Moonlight Mattress
- Lightweight sleepers (< 130 lbs)
- Side sleepers with lightweight and average-weight (130–230 lbs) body types
- Those who enjoy the feel of a plush mattress
- Hot sleepers
Who Should Steer Clear of the Helix Moonlight Mattress
- Heavyweight (> 230 lbs) and plus size (> 300 lbs) sleepers
- Couples concerned about motion transfer
- Stomach sleepers of all body types

Helix Midnight Mattress

Our Recommendation
Financing Options
The Helix Midnight is the brand’s most popular model, with a medium firmness level that can suit side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers. It has a classic memory foam feel that’s reminiscent of Tempur-Pedic mattresses, but it’s also responsive and supportive thanks to the pocketed coil core and transition layer of latex-like Helix Dynamic Foam.
The versatility of the Helix Midnight also makes it one of the best mattresses for couples who fall into the average-weight category. The Helix Dusk, the brand’s other medium-firm bed, has a neutral foam feel and slightly more support. If you’re having trouble deciding between the two, we recommend the Midnight for those who have aches and pains, enjoy the feeling of sleeping “in” their mattress, and spend more time sleeping on their sides.
Who’s Going to Love the Helix Midnight Mattress
- Side sleepers of all body types—lightweight (< 130 lbs), average-weight (130–230 lbs), and heavyweight (> 230 lbs)
- Couples
- Memory foam lovers concerned about overheating
- Value shoppers
Who Should Steer Clear of the Helix Midnight Mattress
- Heavyweight back sleepers and stomach sleepers
- Combination sleepers
- Fans of extra soft or extra firm mattresses

Helix Dusk Mattress

Our Recommendation
Financing Options
Financing options are available for this mattress.
Like the Helix Midnight, the Dusk is a hybrid mattress with a medium-firmness. On our mattress firmness scale, we think both the Midnight and the Dusk fall around a 6/10, with 10 being the most firm.
However, the Dusk is designed to feel more like neutral foam as opposed to the Midnight’s memory foam feel. Helix achieves this by placing its responsive, supportive Helix Dynamic Foam on top of the Dusk. While you won’t experience as much pressure relief as you would on the softer Midnight or Sunset mattresses, you’ll most likely feel supported in any sleeping position atop the Helix Dusk.
The top layer of foam in this mattress also gives it slightly more bounce than the Midnight, which may appeal to combination sleepers and those who want more responsiveness.
Who’s Going to Love the Helix Dusk Mattress
- Back sleepers of all body types
- Those with average-weight (130–230 lbs) body types
- Stomach sleepers under 230 lbs
- Hot sleepers
Who Should Steer Clear of the Helix Dusk Mattress
- Heavyweight (> 230 lbs) stomach sleepers
- Lightweight (< 130 lbs) side sleepers
- Soft mattress lovers

Helix Twilight Mattress
Helix Twilight Mattress

Our Recommendation
Financing Options
Financing options are available for this mattress.
As the second-firmest mattress in Helix Sleep’s standard line, the Twilight has a firm feel but offers pressure point relief with a top layer of memory foam. If you sleep primarily on your side but enjoy a firmer bed, this could be a good option for you.
The Twilight is a great mattress for back sleepers and stomach sleepers who need a firm bed, but also want pressure relief to prevent aches and pains. The Twilight will feel more supportive than the Dusk and Midnight beds (each of which has a medium-firmness), but it isn’t going to feel quite as firm as the Helix Dawn.
See our list of the best mattresses for back pain for other firm mattresses that still provide pressure relief in crucial areas.
Who’s Going to Love the Helix Twilight Mattress
- Back and stomach sleepers requiring pressure relief
- Hot sleepers looking for a temperature-neutral mattress
- Average-weight and heavyweight sleepers
Who Should Steer Clear of the Helix Twilight Mattress
- Memory foam purists who enjoy sleeping “in” their mattress
- Lightweight sleepers
- Those who prefer a soft mattress

Helix Dawn

Product Details
Our Recommendation
Financing Options
The Dawn is the firmest bed in Helix’s standard line and is rated 8/10 on our mattress firmness scale. Helix recommends this mattress for stomach sleepers and back sleepers that are average-weight and heavyweight. We also think it’s also a good choice for combination sleepers who like to sleep “on” their mattress.
Unlike the Twilight, the Dawn has a layer of Helix Dynamic Foam in both its comfort and transitional layers. Each of these layers work to give the bed a bouncy, supportive feel throughout. If you prefer feeling lifted and supported as opposed to hugged on a firm bed, the Dawn is a great pick.
Who’s Going to Love the Helix Dawn Mattress
- Back sleepers
- Stomach sleepers
- Couples and those who sleep with a partner
Who Should Steer Clear of the Helix Dawn Mattress
- Side sleepers
- Soft mattress fans
- Those with joint pain

Here at Mattress Nerd, we classify lightweight sleepers as weighing < 130 lbs, while average-weight sleepers are between 130–230 lbs, and heavyweight sleepers weigh over 230 lbs.
All six Helix standard mattresses feature a polyester cover, a transitional layer of Helix Dynamic Foam and 8” pocketed coils over a high-density base layer. The main difference between the six beds is in the comfort layers, which contain either memory foam or Helix’s proprietary latex-like foam, depending on the model.
Because the construction is fairly similar, each bed’s firmness level and top foam layer are the most important factors when considering whether it will work for you. In general, Helix’s softer mattresses (the Sunset and Moonlight) are well-suited for lightweight sleepers, and the medium Midnight and Dusk models are popular among average-weight sleepers. The firmer Twilight and Dawn beds work for some heavyweight individuals and for average-weight sleepers who like firm mattresses.
Helix Mattress Performance
Cooling
All Helix mattresses are designed to sleep cool, making them some of the best mattresses for hot sleepers. The pocketed coil base layer provides ample room for airflow. Though the cover doesn’t feel cool to the touch, it has a stretchy feel that aids in overall breathability. The Helix mattresses made with memory foam may absorb slightly more heat than those with Helix Dynamic Foam, but the difference shouldn’t be noticeable to the average sleeper.
Back Pain
As long as you choose a Helix Sleep mattress that’s a good fit for your body type and sleeping position, you should also experience great pain relief. The comfort layers in these beds actively work to alleviate tension along the spine and at the hips and shoulders, regardless of whether they’re plush, medium, or firm.
If pressure relief is your top priority, we recommend choosing a model with a memory foam comfort layer to provide relief to joints like the elbows, shoulders, and neck. If you need a mattress that supports your lower back, choose one that has a firmer feel.
Couples
If you sleep with a partner and are concerned about being awoken by their movement throughout the night, motion isolation is worth some extra consideration. The firmness level and construction of each Helix model will determine each bed’s motion isolation capabilities.
Across the board, the Helix beds with memory foam (the Sunset, Midnight, and Twilight) absorb more motion than those with bouncier Helix Dynamic Foam (Moonlight, Dusk, and Dawn). And as a rule, softer mattresses also absorb more motion than firmer, more responsive options.

How Construction Impacts The Feel of the Mattress
The standard Helix mattress models share a similar construction, but feel a little different because of varying materials and firmness levels. Those with a memory foam top layer will provide better pressure point relief and body contouring. Those with Helix Dynamic Foam top layers will have better responsiveness. You can expect to sink deeper into the softer mattress models, while resting “on top” of the firmer models.
When deciding which Helix mattress is the best fit, consider the firmness level and materials that best align with your sleeping position, body type, and comfort preferences. For example, the medium-soft Helix Sunset is best for side sleepers of any body type who prefer the conforming feel of memory foam. In contrast, the extra firm Helix Dawn is best for back and stomach sleepers who like a more buoyant, supportive feel.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?
Shipping
All new mattresses from Helix ship as a bed-in-a-box and typically arrive within 7 to 14 business days. Customers may notice a slight odor when they first unbox their Helix mattress, especially if it’s one of the models that contains memory foam. Still, any off-gassing odor should dissipate within one to three days.
Sleep Trial
Helix Sleep offers a 100-night sleep trial period when you purchase a mattress from its standard line. Like many other mattress companies, Helix requests that consumers keep the mattress for at least 30 nights before initiating a return. It typically takes the body 30 nights to adjust to a new mattress.
If you’re not satisfied with the mattress, you can return it for a full refund or request a mattress topper from Helix at no additional cost. If the topper doesn’t make enough of a difference, you can still return the mattress within the trial period.
Helix Mattress Warranty Information
Which mattresses are covered by Helix’s Warranty?
The Helix mattress warranty policy ranges from 10–25 years. All of the standard mattresses are protected against workmanship and material defects for 10 years. The Helix Plus and upgraded Helix Luxe models are protected for 15 years, and the Helix Birch mattresses are covered for 25 years. The last 15 years of the Birch warranty are pro-rated, and you’ll be required to pay 50–95 percent of the original price, plus shipping.
If you find a defect, you must ship the mattress to Helix Sleep at your own expense. If Helix Sleep confirms the defect, they’ll reimburse you for shipping fees, repair or replace the mattress, and ship it back to you for no additional charge.
In the mattress industry, most warranties are around 10 years, so Helix is generally above average in this area.

What is Covered by the Helix Warranty?
- Visible Indentation or Deterioration– The warranty covers visible, permanent indentations in the polyfoam or memory foam comfort layers that are deeper than 1”—unless they are associated with the use of an improper or unsupportive base or foundation.
- Physical Flaws– The warranty covers physical flaws that may cause the foam or innersprings to split or crack despite regular usage and appropriate handling. If the mattress has been stored or used on an improper base, then these physical flaws may not be covered.
- Assembly/Manufacturing Defect– Any defects caused during the manufacturing or assembly process. If your mattress arrives with a defect—including a damaged mattress cover—be sure to contact customer support right away.
What is Not Covered by the Helix Warranty
- Comfort Preferences – The Helix mattress warranty clearly states that it doesn’t cover issues with comfort preferences after the 100-night sleep trial ends. Examples of comfort preferences include firmness level, motion transfer, temperature regulation, edge support and pressure relief
- Normal Increase of Softness – Over time, your mattress may become softer. This is normal and is just the result of regular use.
- Mattresses Sold By Unauthorized Resellers – Helix mattresses have to be purchased through an authorized retailer like Helixsleep.com or Amazon for the warranty to be valid.
- Non-Defective Part Replacements – The warranty only covers the replacement of defective pieces, not the whole mattress. In some cases, the whole mattress will be replaced, but it’s possible that only the damaged part of the mattress will be replaced.
- Off-Gassing – Most bed-in-a-box mattresses have a slight scent when they’re unboxed. This is due to off-gassing caused by the chemicals used in the foam layers. The chemicals are safe, and the scent should only last a few hours. If it lasts longer, it might be a potential manufacturing issue, but otherwise, it’s not covered by the warranty.
Addressing Helix Mattress Complaints
Sleeps Hot
A few customers complained that their Helix mattress caused them to overheat. There are several reasons why a mattress might seem to sleep hot for certain people. Memory foam mattresses tend to cause some sinkage and provide a “hugging” sensation, which can trap heat around the body. Plus, some people naturally have a higher body temperature than others.
The Helix mattress line is designed to stay cool. All Helix mattresses have a breathable cover and hybrid construction with individually wrapped coils that allow airflow through the bed. The models that have Memory Plus Foam layers may retain more body heat, so hot sleepers should be aware of that. Also, softer models will allow you to sink deeper and be more enveloped by the foam.
Overall, Helix beds should work well for most people sleeping with air conditioning. For extra-hot sleepers, we recommend upgraded to a Helix Luxe mattress or adding the Helix Ultra-Cool Mattress Pad—a topper that features cooling phase-change material that absorbs heat.
Can Cause Backaches
A few Helix customers complained of back pain after sleeping on their new Helix mattress. Chances are, those folks didn’t choose the best model for their sleeping position and body type. If you choose the correct mattress for your needs, sleeping should not cause new back pain or exacerbate chronic pain.
Each Helix mattress is designed to maintain proper spine alignment and provide pressure relief for certain kinds of sleepers—both of which are key to avoiding back or joint pain. Hopefully, this overview of Helix’s standard mattresses helps you choose which model is right for you. We also recommend taking the free sleep quiz on Helixsleep.com. And remember that you can return your mattress during the 100-night sleep trial.

The primary difference between Helix and Purple mattresses is that Helix creates hybrid mattresses consisting of both foam and coils, while Purple uses a unique, gel-like polymer grid on top of either support foam or coils.
The Helix Midnight can work for all sleeping positions, depending on your body type. The original Purple mattress is best for back sleepers, hot sleepers, and those weighing less than 230 lbs. The Helix is more affordable, but the Purple may be more durable.

Helix Mattress FAQs
Is Helix a good mattress brand?
We consider Helix Sleep to be one of the top online mattress brands currently on the market. They use quality materials to make a standard and upgraded Luxe mattress model for every firmness preference. They also offer free shipping, an industry-standard 100-night trial period, and 10–15 year warranties.
Do Helix mattresses sag?
Helix mattresses have a durable design and shouldn’t sag if stored on a supportive enough bed frame. The warranty for all standard Helix mattresses requires a supportive base with slats no greater than 5″ apart. Platform bases, adjustable bases, and box springs are all acceptable if they provide adequate support.
How long does a Helix mattress last?
We expect Helix mattresses to last seven to 10 years. The mattress models with thicker foam top layers may show signs of wear earlier than those with thinner layers of foam. Experts recommend replacing your mattress every 10 years, so Helix mattresses last about as long as they should.
What if my mattress is uncomfortable right away?
The Helix mattress warranty doesn’t cover comfort preferences, but these beds do come with a 100-night sleep trial. If you’re not loving your new mattress after the 30-day break-in period (but before the 100-night sleep trial period is over), then you can return it for a full refund.
