We’re comparing the GhostBed Classic with the more expensive, extra cooling GhostBed Luxe. Is this extra cost worth it to meet your mattress needs, or will the more budget-friendly original fit the bill?
The original GhostBed has a responsive latex top layer, plus several pressure-relieving layers of gel memory foam. The GhostBed Luxe is an all-foam mattress with seven layers that boasts cooling technologies for hot sleepers.
There’s a hefty price difference between the models, so based on our testing process, we’re here to help you decide if the affordable GhostBed Classic meets your needs or if the Luxe is worth the extra cost.

Budget-conscious shoppers | Hot sleepers |
The GhostBed and the GhostBed Luxe differ only by one on the 1–10 mattress firmness scale: The GhostBed is 6/10, and the Luxe is 5/10. Six out of 10 is medium-firm while 5/10 is medium-soft.
The GhostBed and GhostBed Luxe are both generally too soft and lacking in spinal support for most people over 230 lbs. The Luxe has the conforming “hug” of more traditional memory foam. The latex comfort layer of the original GhostBed gives it more of a bounce. We felt like we were lying more “on” it than “in” it.
What does this mean for the sleeper? The original GhostBed’s slightly firmer construction will appeal more to the back and stomach sleepers. The side sleeper will likely prefer the GhostBed Luxe as it curves closer to the body and better cradles the pressure points.
GhostBed Classic Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 4 | 4 | 2 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 4 | 4 | 3 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 2 | 3 | 2 |
GhostBed Luxe Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 4 | 3 | 5 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 4 | 2 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 3 | 2 | 4 |
Both GhostBeds are great mattresses for average-weight back sleepers because their layers keep you aligned. Stomach sleepers will prefer the Classic GhostBed for its more elevating support, but average-weight side sleepers should enjoy the pressure relief on the GhostBed Luxe.
Heavyweight back and stomach sleepers should pass on both of these mattresses because they aren’t firm or supportive enough for those positions. On the other hand, heavyweight side sleepers should feel comfortable with the pressure relief of the GhostBed Luxe.
Lightweight side and back sleepers can choose either mattress, because they are soft enough to conform to this weight category. Lightweight stomach sleepers will probably prefer the firmer GhostBed Classic mattress.
The GhostBed mattresses have similar all-foam construction, but the Classic offers more bounce and the Luxe offers more cooling features and is taller (13”).

The GhostBed Classic’s quilted cover has a breathable, soft feel, and is made from a blend of viscose and polyester fabric, while the GhostBed Luxe’s cover is quilted with cooling fibers that increase airflow and Ghost Ice fabric with Phase Change Material that regulates heat.
The Classic’s aerated latex layer pulls heat away from the body, as does the gel-infused memory foam. The gel-infused memory foam on the GhostBed Luxe helps keep you cool by drawing heat away from your body. The Ghost Bounce layer responds a bit like latex while still contouring the body.
Both mattresses feature thick, dense foam for support.

Memory foam beds often underperform when it comes to cooling, especially compared with innerspring and hybrid mattresses, which have both foam and coils. Memory foam tends to trap more body heat because it’s denser than coils. But the GhostBed brand has targeted this problem to help the hot sleeper.
The GhostBed Classic has a breathable cover followed by an aerated latex foam. The small holes are designed to allow heat to move away from the body. The gel memory foam has larger cells than traditional memory foam, which also helps transfer heat away.
The GhostBed Luxe has even more technology to address the issue. With Phase Change Material that reacts to your body heat and their patent-pending Ghost Ice layer, the Luxe has the advantage for keeping you cool atop your fully foam mattress, even transfering heat to keep the entire support core of the mattress cool.

When sleeping with a partner, kids, or pets, you want a mattress that will stop motion transfer from one side of the bed to the other. The GhostBed’s latex top layer creates a slight bounce causing it to have an average score for motion isolation. The GhostBed Luxe is an all-foam mattress with lots of absorbent memory foam, so it better isolates motion.
Edge support in a mattress has two primary categories: while lying flat along the edge and while sitting on the edge. Foam mattresses don’t usually make the top of the list in either category. While our testers did feel comfortable and stable lying stretched out on both, the firmer GhostBed Classic wins in this category, but not by much.
If you’re really looking to frequently sit on the edge to get up slowly or tie your shoes, steer away from foam. Instead, take a look at innerspring mattresses. They have edges encased in heavy coils or a firm polyurethane foam that provide superior support.
When you sleep, your body presses deeper into the mattress in certain places depending on your sleeping position. For a side sleeper, your shoulders and hips support most of your torso’s weight. The GhostBed Luxe has a more plush feel that cushions these spots while still providing spinal support. In contrast, the original GhostBed received only an average rating in this category.
Back pain from your mattress typically stems from poor spinal alignment. Stomach sleepers are more likely to need support to keep their spine aligned throughout the night. The firmer original GhostBed helps prevent the hips from sinking too low, which is important for proper spine alignment while stomach sleeping.
The latex top layer and high-density foam of the base layer help alleviate back pain. The Luxe is softer, so it’s not ideal for stomach sleepers, but it should keep back and side sleepers’ spines aligned.
Both the GhostBed and GhostBed Luxe should last you around seven years before showing wear such as body impressions. This is typical for a quality memory foam mattress, which begins breaking down after that point. If you notice more than a 1” indentation, you can file a claim to have GhostBed replace or repair your mattress during the warranty period.
GhostBed is an online mattress company that offers free shipping on all of their beds. Your mattress is compressed and vacuum-packed for bed-in-a-box delivery. If you need white glove delivery, this can be purchased for an additional $279.
GhostBed mattresses are non-toxic and CertiPUR-US certified for low emissions and no toxic chemicals, which means there will be minimal off-gassing after unpacking your new mattress.
GhostBed includes a 101-night sleep trial period with every mattress. They want you to try your new mattress for at least 30 days. After that and BEFORE day 101, you can request a refund and return the product if you’re not satisfied.
Note: The trial period and return policy may differ if you buy your GhostBed from Amazon.
The GhostBed Luxe has a 25-year warranty, while the more affordable original GhostBed’s warranty is 20 years. Despite this, foam mattresses should be replaced every seven to 10 years. Memory foam and polyfoam begin to break down, and you may begin to notice body impressions. The good news is, as long as you don’t void the warranty, you can make a warranty claim.

If you’re a hot sleeper, we think you’ll find it worthwhile to spend the extra money to sleep cooler on the GhostBed Luxe. It’s also more pressure-relieving for side sleepers. If you sleep on your stomach or back, the support of the GhostBed Classic will be a better match.
Also, the GhostBed Luxe has a higher rating for motion isolation, which appeals to couples or those who co-sleep with kids or pets. For the budget-shopper, the GhostBed Classic is a quality mattress with a value price point.
The GhostBed Luxe is the softest GhostBed mattress in terms of firmness. It falls at a 5/10 on our firmness scale, meaning it is medium-soft. So, it will not be the softest bed in the world, but it feels plush enough to sink into.
The most similar mattress to GhostBed is the Purple mattress. Both are all-foam mattresses, and both beds have a unique, bouncy feel: GhostBed thanks to latex foam and Purple thanks to the gel grid. Both mattresses also offer great airflow to keep hot sleepers cool.
GhostBed mattresses are not toxic. In fact, they are CertiPUR-US Certified, meaning they have been tested for harmful chemicals and emissions. A mattress with the certification should be safe to have in your home. Check out the GhostBed Natural mattress for a natural and organic alternative.
