Is the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress for You?
Who’s Going to Love the GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress
- Back sleepers: The GhostBed 3D Matrix blends pressure relief from soft foam layers with the support of latex and coils—a combination that is ideal for back sleeping.
- Side sleepers over 130 lbs: The 3D Matrix has a medium-firm feel that will cushion the pressure points of side sleepers, particularly those with average weight (130–230 lbs) or heavyweight (> 230 lbs) body types. Lightweight (<130 lbs) side sleepers will want an even softer mattress.
- Hot sleepers: With a breathable coil support system, a cooling cover, and gel-infused memory foam, the 3D Matrix gives hot sleepers a cool sleep experience.
Who Should Steer Clear of the GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress
- Most stomach sleepers: Stomach sleepers who weigh more than 130 lbs need a firmer mattress to keep their spine in alignment, which is key to avoiding back pain. A better option is the Plank mattress by Brooklyn Bedding.
- Budget shoppers: The GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress starts at over $2,000 for Twin XL, so it definitely doesn’t make our roundup of the best affordable mattresses. A better value buy is the Brooklyn Signature mattress.
- Plush mattress fans: With a medium-firm feel, the GhostBed 3D Matrix won’t please sleepers who want to be enveloped by plush foam comfort layers. The Helix Sunset mattress is better for those who like a plush feel.
As GhostBed's most advanced mattress, the 3D Matrix provides proprietary cooling technology that absorbs heat and actively moves it away from the body. You get the support of a hybrid mattress and the cradling comfort of foam layers.

GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress Firmness and Feel
GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress Firmness
The 3D Matrix is a medium-firm mattress, which is also considered the universal firmness level, since it’s not too soft and not too firm (Goldilocks anyone?). We pegged it at about 6/10 on our 1–10 firmness scale, with 1 being feather soft and 10 being hard as a board.
What Does The GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress Feel Like?
The GhostBed 3D Matrix has what we in the mattress testing world call a balanced feel. In other words, the cushioning effect of the foam top layers is tempered by the supportiveness of the coil base layer. As a result, you sink a little way into the foam, but stay lifted—more on top of the mattress than in it.
There’s a single memory foam layer near the top of the mattress that’s dense and contouring, but overall, the 3D Matrix doesn’t feel anything like the memory foam mattress we’ve reviewed.
Which Sleeping Position Is the GhostBed 3D Matrix Best for?
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 4 | 4 | 3 |
Average weight (130–230 lbs): | 4 | 3 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 4 | 2 | 4 |
1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers with lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight body types should all find the 3D Matrix is capable of supporting the spine and evenly distributing body weight. The upper comfort layers of foam are soft enough for the hips to sink slightly, while the coils keep the spine lifted in a healthy, neutral alignment. For more of our favorites for supporting the spine, see our best mattresses for back sleepers roundup.
Stomach Sleepers
The GhostBed 3D Matrix is not the best mattress for stomach sleepers, particularly those with average-weight or heavyweight body types. The top layers are a touch too soft to keep folks with those body types lifted on top of the mattress. It’s really important for stomach sleepers’ hips to stay in line with their shoulders, otherwise, they could develop lower back pain.
Lightweight stomach sleepers will probably fare well on the 3D Matrix, especially if they only spend part of the night on their stomach.
Side Sleepers
Average-weight and heavyweight side sleepers should experience ample pressure relief around their shoulders and hips—sinking just far enough into the foam layers to cradle their bodies. Lightweight side sleepers may find the GhostBed too firm to properly contour around their bodies. There are more pressure-relieving options on our best mattresses for side sleepers list.
Combination Sleepers
The buoyancy of the 3D Matrix polymer layer and latex-like Ghost Bounce layer gives the mattress responsiveness that’s well-suited to combination sleepers. With that said, keep your primary sleeping positions in mind; if you weigh more than 130 lbs and spend most of the night on your stomach, you may want to look for other options, like those on our best mattresses for combination sleepers roundup.
GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress Performance
Is The GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress Cooling?
With two layers specifically designed to absorb body heat and cool the sleeper, the GhostBed 3D Matrix excels at temperature regulation. The 3D Matrix polymer layer stretches out in all directions instead of simply compressing, which means that body heat is distributed outward and away from the user. The cool-to-the-touch mattress cover and gel-infused memory foam provide the pressure relief of memory foam without fear of heat entrapment.

Edge Support
Reinforced coils around the edges of the 3D Matrix mattress provide strong edge support, which enables sleepers to stretch across the whole mattress surface or sit securely along the edges of the bed.
Responsiveness
Even with a memory foam layer, the GhostBed 3D Matrix is a very responsive mattress, which enhances ease of movement. The foam layers cradle your body as you change sleeping positions without causing you to feel stuck in the mattress.
Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?
Though every couple is different, most will be happiest with a mattress that isolates motion. A mattress that prioritizes motion-isolating construction can help prevent those unfortunate wake-ups when your partner moves during the night.
Although the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress includes motion-transferring coils, the multiple foam layers effectively trap surface motion where it starts, making this one of the best mattresses for couples.
Noise
If you want a truly quiet mattress, opt for one made entirely of foam. Innerspring and hybrid mattresses tend to squeak more, simply because of the possibility of friction between coils. This is especially true for innerspring mattresses, which have coils that are connected into one unit.
Even with coils, the GhostBed 3D Matrix is fairly quiet. That’s probably because the coils are individually wrapped to prevent steel-on-steel contact between the coils.
Pain Relief
The supportive feel of medium-firm mattresses like the GhostBed 3D Matrix is ideal for reducing or preventing back pain. Still, if you sleep on your stomach, look for a firmer mattress that keeps your hips lifted on top of the mattress.

Sex
The GhostBed 3D Matrix is an excellent mattress for sex, mainly because it’s so buoyant. You’re unlikely to have any issues moving around on the surface of this mattress.
Off-Gassing
Mattresses with foam layers often have an odor—a lot like a new car smell. This is called off-gassing, and it usually takes place in the factory where the foam is manufactured. Some of the odor gets trapped during the boxing process, and we did notice a little odor when we unboxed our GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress. Fortunately, the scent didn’t stick around for long.
Durability
The GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress will probably last you in the ballpark of seven to 10 years. If you notice any issues that affect your sleep quality, check to see if they’re covered by the GhostBed mattress warranty.
GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?
The GhostBed 3D Matrix hybrid mattress consists of seven layers including foam and coils. These materials together create cushioning, yet supportive, experience for sleepers. At 13” tall, the 3D Matrix is taller than average for a bed-in-a-box mattress.
Layer #1—Ghost Ice Cooling Cover: This mattress cover is made with breathable, cool-to-the-touch Ghost Ice fabric that provides immediate relief to hot sleepers.
Layer #2—3D Matrix Polymer Layer: This top layer, made of temperature-regulating gel polymer, absorbs body heat and redistributes it across the mattress surface.
Layer #3—Gel Memory Foam: A 2″ layer of gel-infused memory foam cradles your body, providing pressure relief and active cooling.
Layer #3—Ghost Bounce Layer: This latex-like layer balances out the conforming feel of the memory foam layer above. It prevents sleepers from feeling trapped in the upper layers and adds a little extra bounce to the mattress.
Layer #4—Ghost 3D Matrix Soft Transition Foam: This layer helps distribute weight across the mattress evenly while also supporting pressure points.
Layer #5—Individually Wrapped & Reinforced Coils: As a hybrid mattress, the GhostBed 3D Matrix includes individually wrapped coils that improve airflow and improve mobility across the mattress.
Layer #6—High-Density Support Layer: The support core of this mattress is made of a 1″ layer of high-density foam, giving the 3D Matrix a sturdy and durable foundation.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?
Shipping & Unboxing
GhostBed has multiple manufacturing locations across the continental USA, which allows you to get your bed within two to five days of placing your order. Shipping is also free for all 48 contiguous states, but it costs $600 for deliveries to Alaska or Hawaii.
Customers have the option to purchase white glove delivery for their new mattress orders, which starts at $199. If you opt for white glove delivery, GhostBed will handle the unboxing and setup of your mattress. They’ll also remove and dispose of your old mattress and shipping and packaging materials.
Warranty
All GhostBed mattresses are covered by the GhostBed mattress warranty, which ranges between 20–25 years. The 3D Matrix mattress has a 25-year warranty that covers indentations over 1” and splits or cracks in the foam. If your mattress develops a defect, you may be eligible for a free replacement mattress or repairs (minus shipping and handling costs).
The warranty is prorated, meaning you’ll be required to pay a percentage of the original purchase price for a replacement mattress after year 10 of ownership. For a deeper dive into all the warranty details, read our GhostBed mattress warranty break down.
Trial Period & Returns
Returns are simple and hassle-free. If you’re unhappy with your GhostBed mattress during the 101-night sleep trial period, you can begin the return process at GhostBed.com or by calling the customer support line. The customer service team will coordinate the best time for the pickup crew to come and get the mattress.
Returned mattresses are either donated to a local charity or recycled so as to reduce waste. Once the return is fully processed, you will be refunded your payment in full.
Addressing GhostBed Mattress Complaints
Delayed Shipping
A few customers complained of delayed mattress deliveries or receiving the wrong mattress. Ultimately, the issue wasn’t with the comfort of the bed, but with the shipping experience. The customers who were shipped the wrong mattress were satisfied with how the company resolved the issue, but that doesn’t excuse long shipping delays, especially when the company promises delivery within five days. If you haven’t received your mattress after a week, reach out to the GhostBed customer support team for a solution.
Not Cooling
We consider the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress to be a cool mattress, but not all customers felt that way. A handful of reviewers were disappointed with the level of cooling they experienced on the 3D Matrix. There’s a chance that those who are especially prone to overheating won’t be sufficiently cool on this mattress. If that’s the case, you can return the mattress during the trial period. Alternatively, you could try a pair of cooling sheets and turn down the temperature in your bedroom.
Comparing Different GhostBed Mattresses
GhostBed 3D Matrix vs. GhostBed Flex
GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress is Best For: | GhostBed Flex Mattress is Best For: |
Back Sleepers | Memory Foam Lovers |
Hot Sleepers | People Seeking A Medium-Firm Mattress |
Average-weight Side Sleepers | Back & Side Sleepers |
The GhostBed Flex is GhostBed’s basic hybrid mattress model. It has a base of pocketed coils and cooling technologies similar to the 3D Matrix, but it lacks the gel polymer layer that makes the 3D Matrix mattress stand out. Both mattresses are compatible with back and side sleeping. We recommend the Flex to budget-conscious shoppers and the 3D Matrix to hot sleepers.

GhostBed calls the GhostBed Luxe “the coolest mattress in the world.” However, with a coil base layer and gel polymer top layer, we think the 3D Matrix hybrid should have that title. The GhostBed Luxe is still one of the coolest all-foam mattresses that we’ve reviewed. It’s also a little softer than the 3D Matrix, so we favor it for side sleepers and those with joint pain.

The original GhostBed mattress is a simplified version of the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress. It swaps support foam for pocketed coils, so it’s less breathable than the 3D Matrix, but it has a naturally cooling latex foam comfort layer. It’s also considerably lower cost than the 3D Matrix—a Queen size original GhostBed $1,295, while a Queen size 3D Matrix costs over two times that price.

Both the GhostBed 3D Matrix and the Casper Wave are hybrid mattresses with relatively similar firmness levels. They both provide pressure relief without sacrificing support, especially with Casper’s Zoned Support layer. We think the GhostBed may be the better choice for strict side sleepers and the Casper for those with back pain.

It’s hard to say which is the better mattress, but we think the Purple Hybrid is better for hot sleepers and those who want multiple firmness options. The GhostBed is an excellent choice for those who don’t want to gamble on unique mattress construction (the Purple Grid is shaped like a waffle with hundreds of pockets).

If pricing is your main concern, the Midnight Luxe is the more affordable option. It’s also a little better for side sleepers. GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress FAQs
What is the weight limit for the GhostBed 3D Matrix?
The GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress has a weight limit of 750 lbs total, which equates to 375 lbs max per person. Most folks won't surpass this weight limit, but if you're looking for a better option for plus-size sleepers, consider the Saatva HD mattress or Brooklyn Bedding Titan mattress.
Is the GhostBed 3D Matrix a flippable mattress?
The GhostBed 3D Matrix is not a flippable mattress, so it's meant to be used only on one side. If you're concerned about body impressions forming, rotate your mattress once a month for the first few months and then every few months as long as you own the mattress.
Where can I buy the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress?
GhostBed mattresses are available on the online mattress store at GhostBed.com. Select models are also sold through retailers like Amazon, Lowe's, and Costco. Keep in mind, when you don't buy your mattress directly from GhostBed, you may have a different trial period and return policy.
The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?
The GhostBed 3D Matrix has a responsive, cooling hybrid construction that’s best suited to back sleepers, side sleepers over 130 lbs, and hot sleepers. It’s not a budget item, but it’s an excellent choice for luxury shoppers who want pressure relief, support, cooling technologies, and the security of a 25-year warranty.
