Is the Douglas Summit one of the best all-foam mattresses for couples? Read on to learn more about the ins and out of the Summit, and our recommendation for you.
Is the Douglas Summit Mattress for You?
Who’s Going to Love the Douglas Summit Mattress
- Back sleepers—Cushioning, but medium-firm mattresses tend to work really well for back sleepers. In this case, the Douglas Summit is a great choice for back sleepers of all sizes.
- Combination sleepers—For combination sleepers, responsiveness is number one when it comes to a good night’s sleep. Fortunately for them, the Douglas Summit is unexpectedly bouncy for a soft, all-foam mattress.
- Couples—The Douglas Summit has a pretty rare balance of bounciness and motion isolation. This means, you can move around easily on this bed, without your sleeping partner feeling your tossings and turnings. All in all, this is great news for couples.
Who Should Steer Clear of the Douglas Summit Mattress
- Hot sleepers—The Douglas Summit, although cool to the touch, suffers from a lack of breathability, like many other solid foam mattresses. So, for a foam bed with more temperature control, check out the GhostBed mattress.
- Seniors—For seniors, or any other sleepers who prefer more support at the edge of their mattress, it’s important to have a bed with a strong perimeter. However, the Summit’s softer feel doesn’t quite cut it here. Instead, check out the Nectar mattress for a foam bed with more edge support.
- Heavier stomach sleepers—Stomach sleepers need a lot of firmness around their hips when sleeping. And, at the same time, heavyweight sleepers tend to need more supportive and firm beds in general. As a result, heavyweight stomach sleepers won’t find the Summit nearly supportive enough. So, for a foam bed that’s more solid, check out the WinkBed Gravity Lux.

Douglas Summit Mattress Firmness and Feel
Douglas Summit Mattress Firmness
Here at Mattress Nerd, we measure firmness on a simple scale of 1–10, where a “1” is softer than feathers and a “10” is harder than the summit of a mountain. With this scale in mind, we found that the Douglas Summit comes in at 6/10. This level of firmness corresponds to a medium-firm feel, which is ideal for the average sleeper and lighter sleepers, but may be a bit too unsupportive for heavyweight sleepers.
What Does the Douglas Summit Feel Like?
The Douglas Summit works by absorbing your body’s heat and then using that heat to soften the bed. So, when you first lie on the Summit, you’ll notice that it feels slightly firmer and cooling, but, as you continue to stay on the bed, you’ll sink deeper and warm up.
What Sleeping Position Is Douglas Summit Mattress Best For?
Body Type: | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers |
Lightweight< 130 lbs: | 5 | 4 | 3 |
Average-weight130–230 lbs: | 5 | 3 | 4 |
Heavyweight> 230 lbs: | 4 | 2 | 5 |
1 = Very poor 2 = Not good 3 = Fair 4 = Good 5 = Excellent
Back Sleepers
As we touched on earlier, medium-firm mattresses tend to be good for back sleepers. This is because the best mattresses for back sleepers offer a balanced feel that supports and cushions the natural “S”-curve of the spine. So, with the Douglas Summit, this medium-firm feel works best for lightweight and average-weight sleepers, but heavyweight back sleepers may benefit from a little bit more firmness.
Side Sleepers
For side sleepers, more softness and pressure relief is generally better. In fact, the best mattresses for side sleepers all have excellent pressure relief around the hips and shoulders. All that said, the Douglas Summit will be too firm for most lightweight side sleepers and some average-weight side sleepers, but heavyweight sleepers will find the Summit’s feel ideal.
Stomach Sleepers
Unlike with side sleepers, the best mattresses for stomach sleepers are more rigid and firm. Why? Because stomach sleepers need to keep their hips elevated to keep their backs supported. In this case, however, the Douglas Summit misses the mark with firmness. While lightweight stomach sleepers can get away with this bed’s soft feel, average-weight and heavyweight stomach sleepers will need a more firm mattress.
Combination Sleepers
Last, but not least, the best mattresses for combination sleepers are responsive and bouncy. The same is true of the Douglas Summit. So, whether you’re a lightweight, average-weight, or heavyweight combination sleeper, getting enough bounce on this mattress shouldn’t be an issue.
Douglas Summit Mattress Performance
Is the Douglas Summit Mattress Cooling?
Despite having a temperature-regulating mattress cover, the Douglas Summit isn’t one of the best cooling mattresses. This is because the Summit’s all-foam construction restricts airflow through the bed.
Edge Support
In general, all-foam mattresses are notorious for having less-than-ideal edge support, since they tend to be softer and less durable. That said, the Douglas Summit still performs decently here.
Responsiveness
For a soft, all-foam mattress, the Douglas Summit is also noticeably bouncy and responsive. So, if you’re a combination sleeper who likes the cushioning feel of memory foam, this bed is definitely worth checking out.
Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?
Motion isolation is how well your mattress captures and muffles unwanted movement throughout the bed. This can be especially important for couples or those who sleep light. All in all, the Summit has strong motion isolation, making it one of the best mattresses for couples.
Noise
Unlike innerspring or hybrid beds, all-foam mattresses have no coils or springs that could creak. And, since the Douglas Summit is a foam bed, it’s pretty much silent.
Pain Relief
To find the right mattress for your pain relief needs, it’s essential to know your body type and sleeping position. With the Douglas Summit, most back sleepers under 230 lbs should be able to get ideal back pain relief, but, for lightweight side sleepers, this bed definitely doesn’t make the cut for the best mattresses for hip pain.
Sex
Since the Douglas Summit is responsive and quiet, couples shouldn’t have any issues here, but it is worth pointing out that the Summit isn’t the most cooling mattress.
Off-Gassing
Like most bed-in-a-box, all-foam mattresses, the Douglas Summit will off-gas, or release an odor, as it expands. However, this process is totally safe and the off-gassing, or new mattress smell, should clear within two days.
Durability
Lastly, one area where the Douglas Summit stands out from other foam mattresses is in its durability. Despite being a softer bed with edge support that falls short of strong, the Summit will likely last you well past the average foam mattress lifespan of seven years.
Douglas Summit Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?
The Douglas Summit is a simply-designed, all-foam mattress that measures in at a foot tall. This bed has three foam layers situated below a cooling mattress cover: a cooling gel-infused layer, an elastic support layer, and a high-density foam base.
- Cooling Mattress Cover—The top layer of this Douglas mattress is a cover made from cooling nanofibers that feel cool to the touch. This fabric both reduces overheating throughout the night and draws sweat away from the body.
- Gel-Infused Foam Comfort Layer—Below the Summit’s cover is a 2.5” thick layer of memory foam that’s infused with cooling gel. For sleepers, this soft foam will also have a contouring and cushioning feel.
- Elastic Foam Support Layer—Getting into the support layers of this bed, the Douglas Summit features an elastic layer of foam that’s 2.5” thicker as well. Unlike the layer above it, this foam has a more lifted and bouncier feel.
- High-Density Foam Base—Finally, the foundation of the Douglas Summit is a 7” tall section of high-density and motion isolating polyfoam. When lying on the Summit, this layer provides extra firmness and durability too.

The only stipulation is that you wait a month to fully acclimate to your Summit before returning it.
Addressing Douglas Summit Mattress Complaints
Hip and Shoulder Pain
Some buyers of the Douglas Summit mattress have complained that the bed was causing them hip and shoulder pain from a lack of support. In our own tests, we did find that, for lightweight side sleepers, the Summit’s medium-firm would not have adequate pressure relief in the hip and shoulder areas.
Too Soft
On the other hand, some sleepers have also claimed that the Summit feels too soft. Despite this bed having a medium-firm feel that should work with most average sleepers, the Summit’s firmness level likely won’t be supportive enough for heavyweight stomach and back sleepers.

Douglas Summit Mattress FAQs
Do I Need a Bed Frame for the Douglas Mattress?
Not necessarily. While you can put your Douglas Summit on a bed frame, the company states that any sufficiently solid surface works as a support for your mattress. This includes platforms, box frames, and bed frames with slats that are closer than three inches apart.
Does the Douglas Summit Off-Gas?
Like with most all-foam mattresses, you might notice a slight odor as your Douglas Summit begins to expand out of its box. This is called off-gassing, and this process is totally safe, since the Douglas’ foam construction is CertiPUR-US-certified against any harmless emissions and materials.
Does the Douglas Summit Sleep Hot?
The Douglas Summit is cool to the touch, but the actual mattress isn’t very breathable. This is because the Summit features an all-foam construction with no cooling layers below the mattress cover. Overall, this bed performs decently in temperature regulation, but may not be ideal for hotter sleepers.
The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?
The Douglas Summit is an all-foam mattress with a medium-firm feel, great for back sleepers and average-weight sleepers. Plus, this bed balances motion isolation and responsiveness, which is ideal for combination sleepers and couples. However, the Summit isn’t firm enough for most heavyweight sleepers, nor does it have the best edge support.
