Cocoon Chill Mattress Video Review
More of a visual person? Check out this video of me, Loren, talking through and demonstrating the best and worst features of the Chill mattress.
Cocoon Chill Mattress Firmness and Feel
Cocoon Chill Mattress Firmness
The Cocoon Chill is a 5/10 on our 1–10 firmness scale (10 being the firmest), making it medium-soft. This firmness level works best for the average side and back sleeper and not as well for most stomach sleepers. Lighter sleepers of all sleeping positions should feel accommodated on the Chill, while heavier sleepers may want to find a firmer, more supportive bed.
For mattresses that feel firmer and may provide additional support, check out the best firm mattresses.
What Does the Cocoon Chill Feel Like?
The Cocoon Chill has a medium-soft, doughy feel to it. When you lie down, the foam automatically molds to your body. It doesn’t have a very bouncy, elevated feel to it, so this is definitely a good choice if you like your mattress to hug you. If you prefer a bouncier feel, check out the best hybrid mattresses.
What Sleeping Position Is the Cocoon Chill Best For?
Body Type: | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers |
Lightweight < 130 lbs: | 5 | 3 | 5 |
Average-weight 130–230 lbs: | 4 | 2 | 5 |
Heavyweight > 230 lbs: | 3 | 1 | 3 |
1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent
Back Sleepers
The best mattress for back sleepers keeps the natural “S” curve of back sleepers’ spines maintained for optimal alignment. The Cocoon does just that for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers. This bed will still support heavyweight back sleepers, but they may find it to be too soft.
Side Sleepers
The Cocoon by Sealy is a great mattress for side sleepers. Side sleepers need extra cushioning and pressure relief for their hips and shoulders, and this mattress surely doesn’t disappoint with its comfort layer that cradles your curves.
The medium-soft firmness will benefit lightweight and average-weight side sleepers the most. This firmness level falls somewhere in the middle of the firmness scale and features a more flexible layer of support foam that both supports and relieves your pressure points. However, heavyweight sleepers may sink past the comfort layers, and so they probably won’t see as much pressure relief.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers need a firm, supportive mattress to keep their hips elevated with the rest of the spine. The Cocoon Chill is just too soft for average-weight and heavyweight stomach sleepers, instead see the best mattresses for stomach sleepers. Lightweight stomach sleepers who prefer a softer feel should be comfortable on the Chill.
Combination Sleepers
Combination sleepers need a responsive bed that’s easy to move around and change positions on. The Cocoon Chill isn’t the best mattress for combination sleepers, including lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight sleepers. The foams are just too soft to allow for easy movement.
If you’re a combination sleeper, check out some of the best latex mattresses, which have a better construction for ease of movement.
Cocoon Chill Mattress Performance
Is the Cocoon Chill Mattress Cooling?
I wouldn’t call the Cocoon Chill mattress “cooling”; I would say it keeps off excessive heat. The Chill model has Phase Change Material within the cover itself. “Phase Change Materials” help regulate body temperature in this mattress. The material absorbs heat when you’re too warm and releases it when you’re too cold. The material does that by changing phases, becoming solid in a cooler state and melting/liquefying in a warmer state.
That being said, the rest of this bed is completely foam: no breathable perforations, no gel infusions, no coils—just foam. This means below the surface of the cooling cover, there are no other cooling materials, so we gave this bed a 2.5/5 for temperature regulations. For beds with higher cooling scores, see the best cooling mattresses.
Edge Support
Edge support in a mattress just means how much the perimeter of the mattress supports your body weight. Like most all-foam beds, the edge support on the Chill mattress is less than ideal; we gave it a 2/5. I would not recommend it if you need those edges to help you get in and out of bed or if you like to sleep there.
Responsiveness
We also call responsiveness “ease of movement” because it refers to how easy a bed is to change positions in. The Chill mattress contains softer foams that are easy to get stuck in. Plus, there are no bouncy coils that make movement easier. We gave this bed a 2/5 in responsiveness, meaning combination sleepers should look for something bouncier.
Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?
People who share a bed may not love the Cocoon Chill. In our motion isolation test, we threw a weighted ball into the mattress to simulate someone getting in and out of bed and moving around. On the other side was a beaker of liquid. When we threw the ball, the liquid in the beaker shook quite a bit, showing how much motion transferred across the mattress.
We gave the Chill a 2.5/5 for motion isolation. If you and your partner are light sleepers, check out the best mattresses for couples.
Noise
Because the Chill is an all-foam mattress, it’s practically silent as you move around. If you hear any noise, it may be your foundation.
Pain Relief
We see how well a mattress deals with aches and pains using our pressure mapping technology. Blue and greens indicate no pressure, yellows indicate slight pressure, and oranges and reds indicate areas of high pressure.
When our light and average-weight testers lay on the pressure map, the Chill showed blues and greens all around. It proved to be one of the best mattresses for back pain.
However, it was a bit of a different story for our heavier tester. When he lay on his side, we saw red in his hips and shoulders and yellow in his low back. Heavier sleepers should check out the Cocoon Chill Hybrid instead.
Sex
The best mattresses for sex are responsive, durable, cooling, and quiet. The Cocoon Chill got average scores in majority of these areas, so it will be a decent mattress for sex, just not great one.
Off-Gassing
Off-gassing is just the “fresh-can-of-paint” smell you experience when unboxing a foam mattress. This scent isn’t harmful; it’s just caused by the combination of foam and plastic and should go away after you air out your bed. The Chill had a slight off-gassing smell—nothing too strong.
Durability
We all know our mattress is a health investment—you want it to last. We think the Cocoon Chill has below average durability compared to similar foam mattresses. Foam breaks down quicker than coils or latex, and the softer foams in the Chill are more prone to sagging compared to firmer foams.
Luckily, Sealy offers a 10-year warranty. If your mattress sags within that time frame, you can get it repaired or replaced.
Cocoon Chill Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?
The Cocoon Chill is a 10” thick memory foam mattress with three layers of foam. The top comfort layer is made of the “Perfect Fit Memory Foam” from Sealy. It will cradle your curves and that’s what you want at the top to keep your spine in a neutral, straight position as you sleep. See what the other layers bring below.
Layer #1—Cooling Cover:
The mattress cover is made with something called Phase Change Material that’s supposed to draw heat away from the body. It puts the chill in Chill Memory Foam.
Layer #2—Memory Foam Layer:
The first comfort layer is literally called “Perfect Fit Memory Foam,” so you know where I’m going with this: the layer adapts to your unique body shape and sleep position.
Layer #3—Comfort Layer:
The second foam layer is responsive foam that’s supposed to add extra bounce to the mattress, but also reduce motion transfer.
Layer #4—Base Layer:
The support layer is made up of thick, dense foam for durability and resiliency.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?
Shipping & Unboxing
Mattresses are shipped compressed inside a box for free via UPS Ground from the company’s plant in Mississippi. Sealy won’t ship outside of the U.S. You can call the company if you’d like to talk about Saturday or expedited delivery. In general, the mattress will arrive between five to seven days.
It took us a little over a minute to completely unbox the Cocoon Chill and remove it from the packaging. It expanded almost instantly.
Warranty
This all-foam mattress comes with a 10-year limited warranty. Sealy will repair or replace the mattress for the original owner if it shows up with or eventually reveals manufacturing defects or material flaws that have nothing to do with normal wear and tear.
That’s also assuming you’re using the right kind of foundation—a firm, solid-surface or adjustable base that can hold the mattress and the sleeper. Or, a slatted base with at least 2” wide slats placed no more than 5” apart.
The warranty also covers indentations of at least 1”. It doesn’t cover any damage you caused or any mattresses sold by resellers.
Trial Period & Returns
You have 100 days to figure out if the mattress works for you. During that time frame, if you still want to send it back, you’ll receive a full refund of the purchase price one to two days after you make arrangements. Sealy will work to find a place to donate or recycle the mattress.
I would tell anyone to test drive a new mattress for at least 30 days of whatever trial period you have for your mattress. It’s just a smart way to approach a new mattress. It takes at least 30 days for you to adapt to the feel of the mattress and to break it in. If you end up not liking it, the company will refund you 100 percent of the purchase price with 70 days to spare.
Addressing Cocoon Chill Mattress Complaints
- Too soft: A few reviewers reported the Chill mattress as being too soft. We found it to be medium-soft, meaning stomach sleepers and heavier people may find this firmness level uncomfortable. If this sounds like you, check out the Plank mattress by Brooklyn Bedding instead.
- Not cool enough: We read a few reviews about this mattress not sleeping cool enough. The cooling feature in the Chill is the Phase Change Material-infused cover. The PCM will keep your temperature regulated, but it won’t sleep cool. We recommend the GhostBed mattress as an alternative.

Cocoon Chill Mattress FAQs
Who makes the Cocoon Chill mattress?
Sealy makes the Cocoon Chill mattress. I’m sure you’ve heard of the superstar mattress company Serta/Sealy. Chances are you’ve slept on their beds at some point in your life. The Chill line of mattresses are shipped directly to your door in a box, instead of being sold in your traditional mattress store.
How long before you can sleep on the Cocoon mattress?
The Cocoon arrives compressed into a box. You have to remove it from the box, unroll it, cut away the plastic, and wait for it to expand. When we unboxed, it expanded immediately. I would recommend waiting about 12 hours for the off-gassing to subside before sleeping on the Cocoon.
Does the Cocoon mattress need a box spring?
The Cocoon mattress does not need a box spring, but you can use one. In fact, you can use just about any foundation, including an adjustable base, platform bed, or a slatted frame (as long as the slats are 2u201d or wider and 4u201d apart or less).
The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?
The Cocoon Chill by Sealy is best for lightweight and average-weight side and back sleepers, as well as those with back pain and budget shoppers. This bed doesn’t sleep cool, but it sleeps temperature neutral, which is good for foam-lovers who are worried about foam overheating.
