Attention Costco shoppers: if you’re looking for an affordable, all-foam mattress, the Casper Select (a Costco exclusive mattress) might be for you. Don’t have a membership? Read on to see if the Casper Select is worth getting one.
The Casper Select is an all-foam, medium-firm, and budget-friendly mattress that works best for back sleepers and lightweight sleepers. Also, this bed’s foam construction provides surprisingly good edge support plus excellent motion isolation and noise reduction, but some hotter sleepers may want a cooler mattress.
At Mattress Nerd, we like to rate mattress firmness on a scale of 1–10, where a 1 is the softest possible and a 10 is like sleeping on bricks. That said, the Casper Select comes in at a medium-firm 6.5 on the scale.
The middle-of-the-road firmness will appeal to most sleepers, especially lighter sleepers and back sleepers. However, some heavier sleepers may want to opt for something firmer.
The Casper Select is an all-foam mattress, so you can expect to get less bounce and more sinking than a spring mattress. This also means that the Select does a solid job of muffling unwanted movement or noise from the bed. However, the Casper Select is still quite responsive and bouncy for an all-foam mattress. Overall, this bed feels lifted but soft.
And, since this Casper mattress is less on the firm side, it still feels lifting and supportive, especially on the lower back. And lastly, for temperature, this bed doesn’t stand out among other foam mattresses, but it does feel slightly cool to the touch when you first unbox it.
Weight Category | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight< 130 lbs: | 5 | 4 | 4 |
Average weight130 – 230 lbs: | 5 | 4 | 3 |
Heavyweight> 230 lbs: | 5 | 3 | 2 |
1 = Very poor 2 = Not good 3 = Fair 4 = Good 5 = Excellent
The best mattresses for back sleepers do their job by supporting the natural curves of the sleeper’s spine and keeping pressure off of the back. And, not coincidentally, it seems like the Casper Select was literally made for back sleepers. Whether you’re a lightweight, average-weight, or heavyweight sleeper, this all-foam bed has an ideal balance of softness, cushioning, and firm support for your lower back.
Next up, the best mattresses for side sleepers are beds that reduce pressure on key areas like the hips and shoulders, and also have enough softness to “sink” into. For the Casper Select, you shouldn’t have any issues getting that support and cushion if you’re a lightweight or average-weight sleeper, but heavyweight side sleepers may need a firmer mattress.
Stomach sleepers do best on a bed that will keep their hips from sinking; the best mattresses for stomach sleepers are usually a little firmer and supportive. So, for the Casper Select mattress, lightweight and average-weight sleepers shouldn’t have any issues with staying lifted enough on top of this bed, despite its softness. However, this sinking will be an issue for heavyweight sleepers who need more hip support.
The best mattresses for combination sleepers allow you to move around and change positions without having to fight against the mattress. For lightweight combination sleepers, the Casper Select should provide enough bounce and support to do this, but average-weight and heavyweight sleepers may want a more responsive, lifted mattress.
If you tend to sweat or overheat during the night, the Casper Select probably shouldn’t be at the top of your list. While this mattress feels slightly cool initially, it doesn’t have any noticeable cooling when lying down on it.
For hot sleepers needing a mattress with temperature-regulating features, check out our best cooling mattresses.
The best mattresses for couples usually have solid edge support, meaning that you and your partner can spread out and lie on the edges without falling off onto the floor. For seniors too, edge support can also be important for getting in and out of bed. And, in this case, the Casper Select has pretty killer edge support for a foam mattress—you shouldn’t have any issues here.
Responsiveness is how well your bed lets you move across it, something that’s a must-have for combination sleepers. For the Casper Select, although this mattress is on the softer, more sinking side, it still has enough bounce to it for combination sleepers to enjoy.
For couples, if your mattress has good motion isolation, then you won’t feel your partner tossing, turning, and getting up during the night. The Casper Select, like many other all-foam mattresses, has outstanding motion isolation—its foam layers absorb any disturbances.
Just like with motion isolation, the Casper Select’s all-foam design kills it at keeping your bed quiet. So, if your partner’s (or your own) movement is causing creaking on your current bed throughout the night the Casper Select might make a great next mattress.
For sleepers needing pain relief, the Casper Select’s supportive foam design targets back pain the best, but sleepers with shoulder and hip pain may not be as satisfied. For heavier sleepers, especially side sleepers, the Casper Select can cause pressure to build up in the shoulders.
Check out our best mattresses for shoulder pain for more options.
The best mattresses for sex are quiet, responsive, and cooling. Although the Casper Select isn’t great for couples who might overheat, this mattress has all of the quietness you’d expect from an all-foam mattress with extra bounce.
Just like the “new car smell,” mattresses can come with a new smell too. In the case of the Casper Select, you shouldn’t have any issues with odor when unboxing it. Also, this mattress is CertiPUR certified against any harmful emissions.
Usually, foam mattresses aren’t the most durable due to them being softer and deforming more easily. However, the Casper Select has a durable construction, along with its strong edge support which prevents warping on its edges.
The Casper Select mattress is made entirely from foam, similar to the original Casper mattress, but is still designed to provide a medium firmness and bounce. Overall, the Casper Select comes in at 12 inches tall and has a soft feel on top with responsive support layers.
Let’s take a closer look at this mattress’s layers:
Open-cell foam: First up, this top layer of foam is breathable and soft, designed to keep excessive heat from building up around the sleeper.
Memory foam: Next, below the Casper Select’s top layer of foam, is a dense, comfort layer of memory foam. For sleepers, this layer offers contouring and pressure relief.
Zoned support layer: Getting deeper in the Casper mattress, next up is the foam Zoned Support layer. This layer is responsible for most of the firmness in the Casper Select, and it provides alignment for sleepers’ backs.
High-density foam base: Finally, the Casper Select’s high-density foam base layer is the firmest of all the layers and serves to keep you elevated when lying on the bed.
