At Mattress Nerd, we like to rate mattress firmness on a scale of 1–10, where a 1 is the softest possible and a 10 is like sleeping on bricks. That said, the Casper Select comes in at a medium-firm 6.5 on the scale.
The middle-of-the-road firmness will appeal to most sleepers, especially lighter sleepers and back sleepers. However, some heavier sleepers may want to opt for something firmer.
What Does the Casper Select Feel Like?
The Casper Select is an all-foam mattress, so you can expect to get less bounce and more sinking than a spring mattress. This also means that the Select does a solid job of muffling unwanted movement or noise from the bed. However, the Casper Select is still quite responsive and bouncy for an all-foam mattress. Overall, this bed feels lifted but soft.
And, since this Casper mattress is less on the firm side, it still feels lifting and supportive, especially on the lower back. And lastly, for temperature, this bed doesn’t stand out among other foam mattresses, but it does feel slightly cool to the touch when you first unbox it.

Side Sleepers
Next up, the best mattresses for side sleepers are beds that reduce pressure on key areas like the hips and shoulders, and also have enough softness to “sink” into. For the Casper Select, you shouldn’t have any issues getting that support and cushion if you’re a lightweight or average-weight sleeper, but heavyweight side sleepers may need a firmer mattress.

Stomach sleepers do best on a bed that will keep their hips from sinking; the best mattresses for stomach sleepers are usually a little firmer and supportive. However, this sinking will be an issue for heavyweight sleepers who need more hip support.

If you tend to sweat or overheat during the night, the Casper Select probably shouldn’t be at the top of your list. While this mattress feels slightly cool initially, it doesn’t have any noticeable cooling when lying down on it.

Edge Support
The best mattresses for couples usually have solid edge support, meaning that you and your partner can spread out and lie on the edges without falling off onto the floor. For seniors too, edge support can also be important for getting in and out of bed. And, in this case, the Casper Select has pretty killer edge support for a foam mattress—you shouldn’t have any issues here.
Responsiveness
Responsiveness is how well your bed lets you move across it, something that’s a must-have for combination sleepers. For the Casper Select, although this mattress is on the softer, more sinking side, it still has enough bounce to it for combination sleepers to enjoy.

The Casper Select mattress is made entirely from foam, similar to the original Casper mattress, but is still designed to provide a medium firmness and bounce. Overall, the Casper Select comes in at 12 inches tall and has a soft feel on top with responsive support layers.

Open-cell foam: First up, this top layer of foam is breathable and soft, designed to keep excessive heat from building up around the sleeper.

When you order your Casper Select mattress, you’ll receive free shipping and free returns from Costco anywhere in the US and Canada (excluding Hawaii and Alaska).
However, if you do choose to buy your Casper Select at Costco, instead of having it shipped, you’ll be able to see the Casper Select in person before you bring it home, but you won’t be able to try it out at the store. That said, you’ll be able to return it for free.

Addressing Casper Select Mattress Complaints
- Pain for stomach sleepers: Some stomach sleepers have reported the Casper Select mattress feeling uncomfortable and placing unwanted pressure on their hips. Specifically, customers have cited that the mattress sinks too deep, lacks firmness, and sags under their bodyweight. This issue applies mostly to heavier sleepers and some average-weight sleepers as the Casper Select lacks enough firmness for these kinds of sleepers.
- Odor: Several customers have also reported that the off-gassing smell of the Casper Select was unusually strong and didn’t dissipate, even after days of ventilating their room. One customer complained that their mattress has a noticeable smell up to a month after they had purchased it. Although we didn’t notice any significant odor when unboxing the Casper Select, any odors you may notice are nontoxic and harmless.
