Brooklyn Bowery Hybrid Mattress Firmness & Feel

Brooklyn Bowery Firmness

The Bowery Hybrid has a universal medium-firm firmness level. On the 1–10 firmness scale, with 1 being the softest and 10 the firmest, the Bowery falls at a 6.5/10. A medium-firm mattress like the Bowery tends to best support back and stomach sleepers thanks to gentle cushioning paired with excellent support.

While some medium-firm beds work well for side sleepers, the Bowery didn’t perform well in our pressure relief test. With thin foam layers atop steel coils, most side sleepers are going to find the Bowery a touch too firm at the hips and shoulders.

What Does the Brooklyn Bowery Mattress Feel Like?

Thanks to its innerspring coils, the Bowery sleeps cool and has a springy feel that supports ease of movement. You’ll notice moderate cushioning under your curves, but you’ll stay more “on top” of the mattress.

What Sleeping Position Is the Brooklyn Bowery Best For?

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  4 4 2
Average-weight (130—230 lbs): 5 5 2
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  4 4 2

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

Most back sleepers will enjoy the feel of the thinner comfort foams atop the pocketed coils. These two elements create an even sleeping surface that contours slightly around the lower back and shoulders to encourage proper spinal alignment. The feel is particularly well-suited for average-weight and heavyweight folks. Lightweight back sleepers may need more cushion than the Bowery provides.

For other back sleeper-friendly beds, head over to our best mattresses for back sleepers roundup.

Side Sleepers

The Brooklyn Bowery Hybrid is not one of the best mattresses for side sleepers. The surface is too firm to cushion pressure points for lightweight and average-weight people, while the comfort layers are too thin for heavyweight people. We recommend softer mattresses with thicker foam layers for most side sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

The firmness and feel of the Bowery Hybrid is also a good fit for most stomach sleepers. The thin comfort foam layers cushion the chest while the firmer coils keep the spine supported. Most average-weight stomach sleepers find an excellent balanced feel on the Bowery, but it may feel a touch firm to lightweight people and a bit too soft at the hips for heavyweight folks.

Check out our best mattresses for stomach sleepers if you fall into either of these categories.

Combination Sleepers

The Bowery mattress has lots of responsiveness and a slightly firmer feel, and these qualities make it a nice choice for lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight combo sleepers who don’t spend much time on their sides.

If you find yourself changing positions frequently throughout the night, but love side sleeping, check out our picks for the best mattresses for combination sleepers.

Brooklyn Bowery Mattress Performance

Is the Brooklyn Bowery Mattress Cooling?

The Brooklyn Bowery Hybrid is cooler than most hybrid mattresses. The top layer of gel memory foam transfers heat away from the surface, while open-cell foams and breathable coils help heat disperse. So while it isn’t as cool as the beds that made our list of the best cooling mattresses for hot sleepers, its cooling innovations are sufficient for most sleepers.

Edge Support

The Bowery incorporates stronger coils along its perimeter to improve edge support. During our testing process, we felt well supported whether lying or sitting along the sides of the bed. Sturdy edges are important if you have a partner who likes to hog the bed or if you need some stability when getting into or out of bed.

Responsiveness

The Bowery’s construction lends itself to great responsiveness—i.e. the amount of time it takes for the mattress to adjust to changes in your position on the surface. We gave it a perfect 5/5 score in this category, so it’s a good option for combination sleepers and those who toss and turn.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

We tested the Brooklyn Bowery for its ability to stifle motion transfer—one of the most important features to consider when finding a good mattress for couples or those who sleep with pets or children. The Bowery did only an average job at absorbing motion, which means you’re likely to feel your partner move around a little.

Noise

We didn’t notice any noise coming from the Brooklyn Bowery during our whole testing process.

Pain Relief

When shopping for a mattress to ease pain, you should consider your body type and sleeping position. You want a bed that supports your spine’s natural curvature and cushions your pressure points.

The Brooklyn Bedding Bowery Hybrid provides excellent spinal support for most back and stomach sleepers, making it a good mattress for back pain. The pocketed coils and pressure-relieving foam layers help keep the spine in a neutral alignment. We recommend that side sleepers with hip or shoulder pain look for a mattress that provides better pressure relief.

Sex

The Bowery is a great mattress for sex: it’s bouncy and responsive, stays relatively cool, and doesn’t make a lot of noise.

Off-Gassing

We didn’t notice any off-gassing coming from our Bowery mattress. If you do, it may take a day or two for the scent to fade, but it’s temporary and non-toxic—akin to a new car smell or the way a freshly painted room smells.

Durability

The Brooklyn Bowery should have an average lifespan of around seven or eight years. With a pocketed innerspring coil support system, the Bowery is supportive enough for individual sleepers weighing up to 300 lbs.

Our only concern is that the Bowery may break down a bit faster for plus-size sleepers. If that’s you, the Titan mattress by Brooklyn Bedding is made to last for those with bigger body types.

Brooklyn Bowery Hybrid Construction: What’s It Made Of?

The Brooklyn Bowery is a hybrid mattress that pairs layers of foam with coils for a balanced medium-firm feel. The memory foam quilted cover lightly cradles the body, with firmer foam and coils beneath providing sag-free support. Gel infusion, open-cell foam, and breathable coils make the Bowery an exceptionally cool bed.

Layer #1—Quilted Gel Memory Foam (1”): A thin layer of memory foam is quilted into the top of the mattress cover. It provides initial comfort and slight body contouring. An infusion of cooling gel minimizes heat retention along the surface.

Layer #2—Open-Cell Comfort Foam (2”): A medium-firm polyfoam layer stops the heavier parts of the body from contacting the firm coil layer below. The polyfoam has an open-cell design for enhanced airflow and quickly adapts to movements, so you don’t sink in too far or feel stuck.

Layer #3—Ascension X Pocketed coils (6”): A pocketed coil support layer responds to each zone of the body, sinking at heavier areas and supporting lighter ones. These coils facilitate generous airflow, keeping hot sleepers cool.

Layer #4—High-Density Base Foam (1”): A base layer of firm and durable support foam adds structure, helping the Bowery stay stable for years of use.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

When you buy online at brooklynbedding.com, you won’t pay for shipping to the continental U.S. Customers in Hawaii, Alaska, and Canada pay a shipping fee that varies based on the items purchased. Mattresses cost $125 to Hawaii and Alaska or $250 to Canada. Shipping typically takes around three to five business days.

As a bed-in-a-box mattress brand, your new Brooklyn Bedding mattress is shipped compressed into a box smaller than the bed itself. When you unbox it and place it on your foundation, unroll it, and carefully cut away the plastic packaging. You can sleep on the Bowery as soon as it inflates.

Warranty

All Brooklyn Bedding mattresses have a 10-year warranty that’s similar to the average mattress warranty. The coverage includes defects, such as indentations greater than 1” and physical flaws in the foam.

The warranty doesn’t cover any damage caused by user error. For instance, sagging that happens due to inadequate support or mold or mildew that results from an accident are not covered by the warranty. In fact, this damage can void the warranty altogether. We recommend using a supportive foundation and a waterproof mattress cover to keep your new bed safe from harm.

Trial Period & Returns

The Bowery comes with a 120-night trial period that begins the day your new mattress arrives in the mail. You must keep your new bed for 30 days before qualifying for a return. The 30 day waiting period allows time for the mattress to break in fully and for you to get used to a new feel.

During the sleep trial, you may return the Bowery for a full refund. Contact Brooklyn Bedding for instructions, which include finding a local donation or recycling center to pick up the bed.

Addressing Brooklyn Bowery Complaints

  • Not much pressure relief: The Bowery didn’t perform well in our pressure relief test, with high pressure at areas like the hips and shoulders of side sleepers. Side sleepers and those with joint pain will want a mattress that offers better pressure relief.
  • Motion transfer: With bouncy coils and a thin comfort system, you’re likely to feel when your sleeping partner moves around or gets into bed. This shouldn’t be an issue for the average couple, but light sleepers may want a mattress that does a better job of isolating motion.
  • Not as soft as expected: On the Brooklyn Bedding website, the Bowery is said to have a medium firmness levelWhen we tested the Bowery, it was on the firmer end of the medium-firm spectrum, so we understand how customers may expect the mattress to be softer than it is.

The Signature’s soft model is better for side sleepers and lightweight people, while the firm Signature is the better choice for those who prefer minimal give.

Both the Bowery and Signature medium have a medium-firm feel that works for most back and stomach sleepers. The Bowery’s memory foam top layer brings more of a slight cradle, while the Signature’s polyfoam comfort layers mean cooler sleep and a bouncier feel.

The T&N’s all-foam build minimizes motion transfer, so it’s typically better for couples who share the bed. The Bowery sleeps much cooler and is a more durable mattress, so it’s the better value.

Can I flip the Brooklyn Bowery Hybrid mattress?
