Plank Firm Mattress Firmness & Feel
Plank Firm Mattress Firmness
The Plank Firm by Brooklyn Bedding (formerly known as the Plank) has a flippable design with a firm side and an extra-firm side. On a 1–10 firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest, the firm side rates a 7.5/10 and the ultra-firm side a 9/10.
The extra-firm side is one of the firmest mattresses we’ve tested, with just a bit more cushion than lying on the floor. This firmness level is best for back and stomach sleepers who find most firm mattresses too soft. The firm side is a tad firmer than the typical medium-firm mattress, and works well for people who enjoy some pressure relief alongside firm support.
What Does the Plank Firm Mattress Feel Like?
As an all-foam mattress, the Plank Firm feels dense and supportive. It lacks the springiness of a mattress with coils, but is easy to move around on because you stay lifted on top of the mattress.
The extra firm side feels a lot like lying on the ground with a thin sleeping pad. The firm side has a feel that will appeal more to the average sleeper, since it has a little more cushion for your curves.
What Sleeping Position Is the Plank Firm Mattress Best For?
Firm Side
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 5 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 5 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 4 | 4 | 4 |
Extra-Firm Side
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 2 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 4 |
1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent
Back Sleepers
The Plank Firm delivers a superb balance of contouring and support for back sleepers of all body types: lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight. The firm side has lightly conforming foam layers that cradle the lower back and help maintain excellent spinal alignment. The extra firm side is barely padded, and keeps you lifted and supported on top of the mattress.
For other options, check out our top picks for the best mattresses for back sleepers.
Stomach Sleepers
The Plank Firm is one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers of all body types who like a firmer feel. Both sides have a thin layer of soft, quilted polyfoam that brings comfort to the chest and hips, while firm core foam ensures the hips don’t sink in too far. Heavier stomach sleepers will get even more support on the extra firm side.
Side Sleepers
We didn’t expect to recommend the Plank Firm to side sleepers because firm mattresses typically cause pressure to build up around the hips and shoulders. Surprisingly, we saw very little pressure on both sides of the Plank Firm when using our pressure map.
Lightweight side sleepers showed minimal pressure near the shoulders and hips on the firm side, but some areas of high pressure on the extra firm side. Average-weight and heavyweight side sleepers had the opposite results: barely any pressure on the extra-firm side, and only moderate pressure on the firm side.
That’s not to say that every side sleeper will love this mattress. It’s very firm, so you won’t experience the cozy cushioning that you would on a softer mattress. If you like both softness and pressure relief, check out the beds that made our best mattresses for side sleepers list.
Combination Sleepers
Combination sleepers require a mattress that’s easy to move around on and does a good job keeping them comfortable in each of their sleeping positions. The Plank Firm keeps you lifted on top of the mattress, so it’s not difficult to roll from one position to the next. It also works for all body types and sleeping positions (except lightweight side sleepers on the extra firm side), so we consider it to be a great mattress for combination sleepers who like a firm feel.
Plank Mattress Performance
Is the Plank Firm Mattress Cooling?
The Plank Firm sleeps about as cool as most all-foam beds. Its firm construction means you won’t be “hugged” by the comfort foam, which reduces the chances of heat retention. However, the Plank Firm can sleep warmer than some hybrid or innerspring mattresses because it doesn’t have breathable coils.
If you sleep hot, consider adding the optional cooling panel. You can also check out the best cooling mattresses for hot sleepers.
Edge Support
The edges of the Plank Firm mattress are firm and reliably supportive, so you can use them to get into bed or sleep near them without feeling unstable.
Responsiveness
The ultra-supportive construction of the Plank Firm keeps you lifted on top of the mattress. This makes it much easier to move around and change sleeping positions. While it doesn’t have the bounce of a mattress with coils, we didn’t have any trouble getting from A to B on this bed.
Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?
So long as both you and your partner prefer firmer mattresses, the Plank Firm is a worthwhile consideration. It does only an average job of absorbing motion, so it’s not the best mattress for couples; still, unless you’re a really light sleeper, you probably won’t wake up when your partner moves around.
Noise
The Plank Firm is a quiet mattress that doesn’t make any noise. If you notice squeaking or creaking, it’s probably coming from your bed frame.
Pain Relief
Some people find that firm mattresses help with back pain. Because the Plank Firm has both a firm and ultra-firm side, it provides exceptional spinal support. If you’re looking for more options to relieve back pain, check out our picks for the best mattresses for back pain. Stomach sleepers especially need a bed that keeps their hips lifted and prevents their lower back from arching out of alignment, which is an area where the Plank Firm excels.
If you have joint pain, the Plank Firm may exacerbate irritation in your shoulders or hips. Even though we noticed very little pressure in those areas during our testing process, the lack of softness is definitely noticeable. For better options, see the best mattresses for arthritis.
Sex
The Plank Firm checks almost all of our boxes when deciding what’s a good mattress for sex: it’s responsive, easy to move around on, and stays quiet. We think adding the top cooling panel would help with temperature regulation.
Off-Gassing
We noticed a little off-gassing (AKA, that new mattress smell) when unboxing our Plank Firm mattress, but it aired out after a day. Brooklyn Bedding uses CertiPUR-US certified foams, so you don’t need to worry about any odors being toxic or harmful. If they bother you, let the mattress air out in a ventilated room before adding your bedding.
Durability
The Plank Firm is more durable than your average foam mattress. Its durability is due in part to ultra-firm foams that resist body indentations better than softer foams. The one issue you might run into is the foams starting to soften after five or so years, which happens to most foam beds.
The Plank Firm can support up to 950 lbs, but Brooklyn Bedding suggests the Titan mattress for folks weighing more than 300 lbs. Heavier folks are more likely to experience softening of the Plank Firm’s top foam layers over time.
Plank Firm Mattress Construction: What’s It Made Of?
The Plank Firm’s flippable design includes an extra-firm side and firm side. You can choose to add an optional cooling panel along both sides of the mattress. The panel contains Phase Change Materials that transfer heat away from the mattress’s surface to combat heat retention.
Layer #1—Quilted Top Layer, Extra Firm Side (0.75”): Along the top layer of the Plank Firm’s ultra-firm side is a thin layer of quilted polyfoam that adds a hint of cushion. Don’t expect much give, just a touch of softness.
Layer #2—High-Density Base Foam (7”): A thick core of firm, durable foam provides sturdy comfort without excess give or contouring.
Layer #3—TitanFlex Comfort Foam (2”): TitanFlex foam provides a slight cushion on the firm side of the mattress for sleepers who like a more traditional firm mattress feel.
Layer #4—Quilted Top Layer, Firm Side (1.5”): A thicker layer of cushiony polyfoam quilted into the mattress cover allows heavier body parts to modestly sink in for pressure relief.

Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm Policies
Shipping & Unboxing
Brooklyn Bedding offers free shipping in the contiguous U.S. with a non-refundable shipping fee for customers in Hawaii, Alaska, and Canada. The typical shipping time is three to five days. Brooklyn Bedding does not currently have a white glove delivery option, so you must set up your new bed yourself.
The Plank Firm is a bed-in-a-box mattress, meaning your new bed is compressed into a box smaller than the mattress before it’s shipped. Unboxing is relatively straightforward, but you may want to have a friend help because the Plank Firm weighs up to 120 lbs. Place it on your bed frame or box spring, unbox it, remove the plastic wrap, and unroll it. This process took us just over two minutes, though it took about an hour for the mattress to fully inflate.
Warranty
The Plank Firm comes with an industry-standard 10-year warranty covering defects, including things like body impressions greater than 1” or cracks in the foam. Normal wear-and-tear and problems caused by the owner are not covered.
Examples of normal wear-and-tear include increased foam softness and changes in the fabric color. Common issues that aren’t covered include sagging caused by an unsupportive foundation, spills, cuts, tears, or burns. We recommend using a sturdy foundation and a waterproof mattress protector to protect your new investment.

Trial Period & Returns
Every Brooklyn Bedding mattress comes backed by a 120-night sleep trial. From the date your new mattress arrives on your doorstep, you have 120 nights to try it out and determine if it’s right for you. You must wait 30 days before initiating a return, as this gives your body time to adjust to a new sleeping surface.
If you decide to return the Plank Firm mattress during the trial period, Brooklyn Bedding provides free returns. You must contact Brooklyn Bedding to start the return and then find a local charity to pick up the mattress. Be sure to grab a receipt from the charity as proof and give it to Brooklyn Bedding. After the process is complete, you can expect a refund on your original form of payment.
Note: The trial period and return policy may be different if you buy your Plank Firm mattress on Amazon.com.
Addressing Plank Firm Mattress Complaints
- No springy feel: The Plank Firm is supportive and easy to move around on, but it doesn’t have the bouncy feel of an innerspring mattress. Some people love the breathable, springy feel of hybrid and innerspring beds. If that’s you, Brooklyn Bedding has several other hybrid mattress models with coil base layers.
- Not good for joint pain: The Plank Firm has thin comfort layers, and may cause too much pressure at the hips, shoulders, and other joints. If you have arthritis, you may prefer a slightly softer mattress.
Comparing Different Brooklyn Bedding Mattresses
Plank Firm vs. Titan Plus
Plank Firm Mattress is Best For: | Titan Plus Mattress is Best For: |
People With Back Pain | Average-Weight & Heavyweight Sleepers |
Back & Stomach Sleepers | Hot Sleepers |
Firm Mattress Fans | Combination Sleepers |
The Titan is Brooklyn Bedding’s medium-firm, one-sided mattress designed for plus size sleepers. It’s a hybrid mattress that’s more durable than the flippable, all-foam Plank. Because the Titan contains coils, it’s a bit bouncier and cooler than the Plank.
Both mattresses work for all body types and sleeping positions, though the Plank is better for stomach sleepers. The two are priced similarly and have the option to add a cooling panel on top.

People With Back Pain | Those Who Want Firmness Options |

Side Sleepers Who Like Firm Mattresses | Hot Sleepers |
The Brooklyn Signature is an affordable hybrid mattress with firmness options, including soft, medium, and firm. The two-sided Plank Firm is an all-foam mattress, with both firm and extra-firm sides. These two mattresses have almost identical pricing, so choose the feel you prefer: the springy, breathable Signature or the dense, supportive Plank Firm.
Because the Signature is offered in three firmnesses, it can accommodate every sleeping position and body type. It’s also a better fit for hot sleepers and side sleepers who like a softer feel. The Plank Firm also works for all body types and sleeping positions. Choose it if you’re a stomach sleeper, want supportive edges, and like an extra-firm mattress.

The Brooklyn Aurora is a luxury hybrid mattress with extra cooling features. Compared to the firm, flippable Plank Firm, the Aurora has more of a conforming and cloud-like feel. It’s offered in soft, medium, and firm, with each model softer than either side of the Plank Firm.
Opt for the Plank if you’re a stomach sleeper, prefer to sleep “on” your bed, and like the feel of a firm mattress. Choose the Aurora if you want more firmness options, sleep hot, and are willing to pay more for a luxurious, “cloud-like” feel.

Tempur-Pedic offers multiple high-end memory foam mattresses, with the TEMPUR-Cloud being priced the closest to the Plank. The TEMPUR-Cloud is only one-sided with a medium-firmness, but it also comes in a hybrid version.
Because the TEMPUR-Cloud has memory foam top layers, it’s more contouring and conforming than the Plank Firm. The Plank Firm stays cooler and is easier to move around, but it won’t provide the motion isolation or cradling feel of memory foam.

The Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress with a pillow top and extra lumbar support. Unlike the Plank Firm, the Saatva is one-sided and offered in Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm. The Firm version has the closest feel to the Plank, though two coil layers give it a springier feel.
The Plank Firm mattress is better than the Saatva for ultra-firm mattress lovers, but if you don’t need floor-like firmness, the Saatva still offers great support. It’s also worth noting that the Saatva comes with a 180-night trial period (compared to 120-nights) and includes free white glove delivery and old mattress removal (compared to free bed-in-a-box delivery).

People With Back Pain | Back & Stomach Sleepers |

Side Sleepers Who Like Firm Mattresses | Couples |
The Helix Dawn is a hybrid mattress that has a firmness level right in between both sides of the Plank Firm mattress. The Dawn is topped with thicker foam layers than either side of the Plank Firm, but the foam is very firm, so expect to sink only as deep as you would on the softer side of the Plank.
Since the Dawn has a coil base layer, it’s bouncier and more breathable. It also isolates motion better than the Plank Firm, so we recommend it to couples. The Plank Firm is handily the better choice for side sleepers, albeit those who like a firm mattress. If budget is your concern, base your decision on the feel of the mattress, since the Plank and Dawn are priced similarly.

Plank Firm Mattress FAQs
Which side of the Plank is firmer?
When you view the Plank mattress from the side, you can see the word “PLANK.” If the word is right-side up, the top is extra-firm. Another way to tell is that the ultra-firm side has a diamond stitch, while the firm side has a jump stitch.
How does the return policy compare to other brands?
Brooklyn Bedding’s return policy is slightly more generous than that of the average bed-in-a-box mattress. Brooklyn Bedding offers free returns during the first 120 nights, compared to 100 nights for most companies. Most brands, including Brooklyn Bedding, won’t accept returns until you’ve had the bed for at least 30 nights.
Is the Plank mattress worth it?
The Plank mattress costs around the same as the average Queen size foam mattress, and is more durable than the average all-foam bed. As it is one of the firmest mattresses on the market, it is a good deal for shoppers looking for a firm feel.
What’s the Bottom Line?
The Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm is best for back and stomach sleepers who love extra firm mattresses. Surprisingly, it also works well for side sleepers who don’t mind the lack of cushion. While it’s not the best cooling or motion isolating mattress around, it’s great for combination sleepers who change positions.
The Plank Firm is priced on par with its online competition, and significantly lower than luxury name brands—especially considering that it has a firm side and extra-firm side all in one mattress. Also, it comes with a 120-night risk-free sleep trial, so you can sleep on it before making a final decision.
