If you’re looking for a top-of-the-line new mattress, Beautyrest and Tempur-Pedic are two household names worth your consideration. In this comparison, we’re focusing on the Beautyrest Black and Tempur-Cloud mattresses—both durable, high quality beds with middle-of-the-road firmness levels.
The Beautyrest Black is a hybrid mattress that’s built with cooling gel foam and a layer of innerspring coils. It offers a balance of comfort and support while helping you stay cool throughout the night. The Tempur-Cloud is a memory foam mattress that provides a supportive feel without compromising pressure relief for back sleepers and those with joint pain.
Beautyrest Black is best for… | Tempur-Cloud is best for… |
Back & stomach sleepers | Those with back pain |
Hot sleepers | Couples |
Heavy people | Foam lovers |
Both the Beautyrest Black and Tempur-Cloud mattresses are medium firm or “luxury firm” mattresses, meaning that they are about a 7/10 on the firmness scale.
Though these beds have the same firmness level, they have vastly different feels. The Beautyrest Black mattress has that traditional, hotel-bed feel. You stay elevated on the surface and it’s pretty bouncy.
The Tempur-Cloud isn’t as easy to move around on, but it hugs you instead of keeping you fully elevated on the mattress. This is a feel best for lighter people and foam lovers.
As I mentioned earlier, both beds have a 7/10 firmness level. This firmness level is ideal for back and stomach sleepers who need a little extra pushback to keep their spines in a healthy posture throughout the night. Side sleepers benefit from a softer bed that cushions their hips and shoulders. If that’s you, we suggest paying a little extra to add a plush pillow top to the Beautyrest Black.

These mattresses have very different constructions—even their heights. The Beautyrest is 13.” tall and the Tempur-Cloud is shorter at 10”.
Beautyrest Black Mattress Materials | Tempur-Cloud Mattress Materials |

Energy Foam (1.5”) | Tempur Material (Memory Foam) |
T3 Pocketed Coil System | Premium Support Foam |
The Beautyrest Black mattress has a temperature regulating cover that keeps the bed cool to the touch. The Tempur-Cloud comes wrapped in a moisture-wicking cover to help keep you dry and comfortable.
The pressure-relieving comfort layers in the Beautyrest Black are alternating layers of gel memory foam and firm comfort foam. The transitional layer is 1.5” of foam that contours around your curves while helping move your body heat away from the surface of the bed.
On the Tempur-Cloud, a comfort layer of Tempur foam allows your body to sink into the bed and feel hugged by the surface of the mattress while still providing firm support. Next, a firmer transition layer keeps your hips and spine from sinking too far into the bed without sacrificing comfort.
When it comes to the Beautyrest, a base support layer made of T3 pocketed coil technology provides airflow and responsive support to your back and spine. At the base of the Tempur-Cloud, an ultra-dense foam support layer provides durability that will help prevent the bed from sagging over time.

A breathable cover helps the Tempur-Cloud mattress sleep cooler than the average foam bed, but the Beautyrest Mattress is built with airy innerspring coils and gel memory foam, helping it stay cool to the touch in any season. If you sleep with a partner who tosses and turns or has a midnight snacking habit, motion isolation will prevent their movements from waking you up throughout the night. The Beautyrest Black has a good level of motion isolation, but between the two beds, the Tempur-Cloud mattress takes the cake. Three layers of dense foam absorb the movements of your partner, pets, or children as they climb in and out of bed.

The Beautyrest Black is reinforced with added edge support, which adds increased durability and allows you to stay supported while sprawling across the whole surface of the bed. The Tempur-Cloud, however, doesn’t have the same layer of support, so if you like to sit or sleep at the edges of the bed, you may not feel as secure.
Both of these beds are built with memory foam layers that gently contour around your curves, but the all-foam Tempur-Cloud bed was built with premium pressure relief in mind. Three foam layers redistribute your weight evenly along the length of the bed while allowing pressure points to sink gently into the surface.
Keep in mind, though, that both mattresses offer only average pressure relief. Side sleepers and those with joint pain will probably want a mattress that’s softer.
The best thing a bed can do to relieve pain is keep your spine aligned. The medium-firm firmness level of these beds makes them both great picks for keeping your spine in a healthy alignment throughout the night. Each bed provides a firm pushback to keep the back propped up, with just enough give to support your body’s natural curves.
These luxury beds are both made with high–quality materials that should withstand the test of time. The Beautyrest Black, however, has a slight advantage since its hybrid construction and added support layer give it extra durable edges.
The Tempur-Cloud is Temper-Pedic’s only bed-in-a box mattress, meaning that it arrives in a compact, vacuum-packed box at your doorstep. You simply unroll the bed on your bed frame, cut away the plastic wrapping, and it will expand to its full size within a few hours.
The Tempur-Cloud comes with a 90-day sleep trial so you can take a couple of months to decide if it works for you. It’s mandatory that you keep the bed for at least 30 days because it takes about that long for the bed to break in and for your body to adjust to the new feel. If you return the Tempur-Cloud, you’ll be responsible for the shipping costs when you send it back.
Lastly, the Tempur-Cloud is covered by a 10-year mattress warranty for the original owner of the mattress.
The Beautyrest Black comes with free white glove delivery, meaning that Beautyrest Black representatives will come to your house, remove your old bed, and set up your new bed at no extra cost. The Black comes with a 100-day sleep trial, free returns, and a 10-year warranty. Keep in mind that the warranty is only valid if purchased from an authorized retailer.

The Tempur-Cloud and Beautyrest Black mattresses are each solid choices if you’re in the market for a luxury mattress with a supportive feel. They both have a medium-firmness that suits sleepers of all body types (lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight) who sleep on their stomachs or backs.
Lightweight sleepers may prefer the Tempur-Cloud, since they may not be able to sink far enough into the Beautyrest Black to get comfortable. The Tempur-Cloud is also the best pick for sleepers looking for an all-foam construction, motion isolation, and pressure relief. The Beautyrest Black, however, is a hybrid bed that sleeps cooler and has a bouncy and responsive feel that’s great for those who toss and turn.
