Bear Pro Hybrid Mattress Firmness and Feel
Bear Pro Hybrid Mattress Firmness
The Mattress Nerd firmness scale ranges from 1–10, with 1 being the softest and 10 the firmest. The Bear Pro Hybrid has a medium-firm feel and a 6/10 firmness rating. This is known as the universal firmness level, since it works for a broad range of sleepers.
What Does the Bear Pro Hybrid Feel Like?
The Bear Pro Hybrid has an elevating feel with not much give or cushion. It offers lots of support, which is partially why it can support both all body types and provide alignment in just about every sleeping position.
What Sleeping Position Is Bear Pro Hybrid Mattress Best For?
Body Type: | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers |
Lightweight< 130 lbs: | 5 | 5 | 2 |
Average-weight 130–230 lbs: | 5 | 4 | 3 |
Heavyweight > 230 lbs: | 5 | 4 | 4 |
1 = Very poor 2 = Not good 3 = Fair 4 = Good 5 = Excellent
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers usually need a mattress that’s medium-firm or firm, and the Bear Pro Hybrid checks that box. Its firm, pocketed coils and dynamic foam layer help keep the hips and shoulders from sinking in this position, while the soft foam layers on the top will conform to the neck and lower back of lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight sleepers.
If you aren’t sure the Bear Pro Hybrid is right for you, see our picks for the best mattress for back sleepers.
Side Sleepers
Most side sleepers won’t see pressure relief on the Bear Pro Hybrid. The top two comfort layers and the thick foam base keeps the spine aligned.
That being said, if you’re a side sleeper who likes a bed with a “sinking” feel, this mattress might not provide enough flexibility. We think heavyweight side sleepers will really love the bed’s neutral feel and combination of responsiveness and softness. Lightweight and average-weight side sleepers may have pressure relief issues.
For more pressure-relieving options mattresses, see best mattresses for side sleepers.
Stomach Sleepers
For stomach sleepers, body weight is the most important thing to take into account when considering the Bear Pro Hybrid. Heavyweight sleepers may find that their hips sink too far into the top layers, which can cause lower back pain. Lightweight sleepers should feel completely supported on this bed in this position, and most average-weight sleepers should be, too.
However, if you sleep on your stomach and have struggled with back pain on medium-firm beds in the past, we recommend a firmer mattress like those on our list of the best mattress for stomach sleepers.
Combination Sleepers
Lightweight and average-weight combination sleepers will love the Bear Pro Hybrid’s mix of responsiveness and soft comfort. Its top layers cradle your pressure points in any position, and the bouncier-than-average feel of this bed’s coils prevent you from ever feeling “stuck” in the mattress. Heavyweight combination sleepers should look for a more supportive mattress: check out the best mattresses for combination sleepers for more options.
Bear Pro Hybrid Mattress Performance
Is the Bear Pro Hybrid Mattress Cooling?
Hybrid mattresses are generally known for their cooling feel, the Bear Pro Hybrid doesn’t differ from this, offering the best temperature control. With its breathable set of pocketed coils at its base, this bed’s foam comfort layers shouldn’t retain too much body heat.
Using our thermal camera we were able to gauge how long the Bear Pro Hybrid took to return to its resting temperature after one of our testers spent time on the bed. It took about four minutes and nine seconds from the time the tester got off of the mattress for it to return to within one degree of its original temperature, which indicates efficient temperature regulation.
Edge Support
Edge support is how much the perimeter of your bed supports your weight, and it’s important for seniors, people with mobility issues, couples who need some space from their partner, and edge-of-the-bed sleepers. If this were a test in Mattress Nerd school, the edge support on the Bear Pro Hybrid would get a ‘C’: very average.
Responsiveness
Hybrid mattresses are generally known for being responsive since they have a base layer of pocketed coils. In this case, the Bear Pro Hybrid is no exception, making it a great choice for combination sleepers.
Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?
Since the Bear Pro Hybrid is a responsive and bouncy mattress, thanks to its pocketed coils, it doesn’t have the best motion isolating on the market. Essentially, this means it won’t absorb and muffle unwanted movement on your mattress as well. So, if you sleep with another person and are worried about this, you should probably check out the Bear Original or another one of the best mattresses for couples.
Noise
If you’re worried about the coils in your Bear Pro Hybrid creaking like with some innerspring mattresses, it’s worth noting that, with the Bear, they’re individually wrapped and pretty silent.
Pain Relief
When we rolled out our pressure map on the Bear Pro Hybrid mattress, we saw great results for pressure relief for back sleepers and heavyweight side sleepers. However, lightweight and average-weight side sleepers with hip or shoulder pain many want to look for a softer option.
The alignment on the Bear Pro was also great, so side and back sleepers shouldn’t have lower back pain issues.
Sex
The Bear Pro Hybrid is cooling, responsive, and quiet. Overall, we’re giving this bed a thumbs up.
Off-Gassing
Though the Bear Pro Hybrid features CertiPUR-US Certified foams, the off-gassing smell was pretty strong. You can’t really sleep on this instantly with the smell. We suggest letting it air out for a few days first in a well-ventilated area.
Durability
Looking at the Bear Pro Hybrid’s construction and edge support, it will have pretty average durability. It should last you about seven to ten years. Be sure to heed the warranty’s warning about your mattress foundation to extend your bed’s life. This includes staying away from box springs and using an adjustable base, platform bed, or any flat, sturdy foundation.
Bear Pro Hybrid Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?
This Bear mattress is a hybrid that measures in at 10” tall and features three major layers which include a cover, a cooling foam comfort layer, and a set of individually-wrapped pocketed coils.
Layer #1: Celliant Cover
The mattress cover is a removable, Celliant cover that’s designed to wick body heat from the sleeper’s body and reflect it back as infrared energy. The brand claims that covers with this design improve muscle recovery, help people sleep more deeply, and regulate temperature.
Layer #2: Gel-infused Memory Foam
Next, this Bear mattress also has a section of gel-infused polyfoam that offers cushioning and pressure relief in addition to temperature control by drawing body heat away.
Layer #3: Bear Dynamic Foam
This transition layer is made of bouncy and supportive foam that adds extra responsiveness to this hybrid bed in addition to keeping you elevated off of the pocketed coils below.
Layer #4: Individually-wrapped Pocketed Coils
The base layer of this Bear mattress is a set of individually-wrapped pocketed coils that are also reinforced along their edges. Essentially, this layer provides much of the Bear Pro Hybrid’s edge support and responsiveness too.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?
Shipping & Unboxing
The Bear Pro Hybrid ships compressed and rolled as bed-in-a-box, so you’ll need to give it about 72 hours to expand to its full size after unboxing. Free shipping is available in the contiguous United States. White Glove delivery is available for an additional $175 fee.
When our team unboxed this mattress it took us just over a minute. It was pretty heavy, so we recommend using a partner. The off-gassing smell was pretty strong, so allow your bed to air out for a few hours before putting on your sheets.
Warranty
The Bear Pro Hybrid comes with a Limited Lifetime warranty that protects against any manufacturing defects, but not against misuse of the mattress.
Trial Period & Returns
The Bear Pro Hybrid comes with a 120-night sleep trial, so you’ll have more than three months to decide if the bed is right for you. Bear requires that you keep the bed for at least 30 nights before making a decision, but returns are totally free during this risk-free trial.
Addressing Bear Pro Mattress Complaints
Strong Off-gassing
A few reviewers have reported a strong, lingering odor after unboxing the mattress. When you first unbox a foam mattress, it emits a smell like a fresh can of paint. This is normal and should go away after airing out your mattress. We experienced this as with the Bear Pro Hybrid, and it went away after a few days.
Too Firm
A few customers have reported their mattress as too firm. The Bear Pro Hybrid, according to our tests, has a firmness rating of 6/10, which is medium-firm, but it has a construction that does not allow you to sink into the bed.

Bear Pro Hybrid Mattress FAQs
Do You Flip the Bear Pro Hybrid?
No. The Bear Pro Hybrid is designed to be slept on one side only; however, you can rotate your mattress to improve its durability. This is because, by turning your bed 180 degrees every few months, you can prevent indentations and sagging from forming over time.
Does the Bear Pro Hybrid Off-gas?
Yes. The Bear Pro Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box mattress, meaning that you’ll notice an odor with its foam materials as it begins to expand. That said, this off-gassing odor, or new mattress smell, should begin to clear away within a few hours to a couple days.
What Makes the Bear Pro Hybrid Different?
Unlike the Bear Original, the Pro Hybrid contains a layer of pocketed coils at its base. This is what makes it a hybrid bed. Plus, it allows for the mattress to have extra bounce, a more durable design, and it allows for more breathability and ventilation too.
The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?
The Bear Pro Hybrid is a bed designed for athletes who need solid recovery at night. With great pressure relief and a medium-firm feel, this mattress appeals most to back sleepers and average-weight athletes, but lacks the necessary firmness for most heavyweight sleepers and stomach sleepers. Other than that, this bed has decent edge support and temperature control.
