Birch Luxe Mattress Firmness and Feel
Birch Luxe Mattress Firmness
At Mattress Nerd, we rate firmness from 1–10 where 10 is the solidest possible. (Think sleeping on your floor). Coming in at an 8 on firmness, the Birch Luxe will appeal to most sleepers looking for a more solid mattress, especially heavyweight sleepers. The Birch Luxe also appeals to all kinds of heavyweight sleepers—regardless of sleeping position. However, side sleepers under 230 lbs may find the Birch Luxe too firm and lacking enough give.
What Does the Birch Luxe Mattress Feel Like?
The Birch Luxe mattress offers a firm but breathable and luxurious feel that appeals to sleepers looking for extra back support. As a solid and heavier mattress, the Birch Luxe provides strong edge support and decent motion isolation. This makes it easier to move around, get off and on, and share the bed without any sinking or waking your partner up.
The mattress itself is made all from organic and luxury materials that reduce pressure in key areas and increase support, bounciness, and breathability. When lying down on the Birch Luxe, you can feel your weight evenly supported and distributed across the mattress.
What Sleeping Position Is Birch Luxe Mattress Best For?

Average-weight130–230 lbs: | 5 | 5 | 3 |

Back Sleepers
The Birch Luxe is great for average-weight and heavyweight back sleepers looking for extra pressure relief and back support.
If you’re a back sleeper, then you’ll need the right spine and neck support to get comfortable. With a strong firmness level, the Birch Luxe mattress more than delivers on spine support, which keeps your back from sinking. In fact, some lightweight back sleepers may even find the Birch Luxe too firm. Want to learn more? Check out the best mattresses for back sleepers.
Side Sleepers
For average-weight and lightweight side sleepers, the Birch Luxe might feel too firm, but heavyweight side sleepers will enjoy the extra support.
When sleeping on your side, it’s important to keep your spine aligned and to keep pressure off of your hips and shoulders. This is because side sleepers put most of their weight on these areas. As a result, the best mattresses for side sleepers are often softer than those for back sleepers. While the Birch Luxe lacks the give that many average-weight and lightweight side sleepers need, heavyweight side sleepers will find this mattress more comfortable.
Stomach Sleepers
If you’re a stomach sleeper, the Birch Luxe offers support where you need it—whether you’re a lightweight, average-weight, or heavyweight sleeper. The best mattresses for stomach sleepers are often firm and keep the hips of stomach sleepers from sinking and their backs properly aligned. For this reason, the Birch Luxe mattress’s hip support and elevation is ideal for all kinds of stomach sleepers.
Combination Sleepers
For sleepers who move around a lot during the night, the best mattresses for combination sleepers are responsive and comfortable in many different positions. The Birch Luxe’s bounciness and responsiveness makes it easy for combination sleepers to change position, and the mattress is most comfortable for average-weight and heavyweight sleepers switching between their backs and stomachs. However, lightweight combination sleepers may find that the Birch Luxe lacks cushion when sleeping on their sides.
Birch Luxe Mattress Performance
Is The Birch Luxe Mattress Cooling?
Despite its weight, the Birch Luxe mattress maintains a comfortable airflow. The mattress’s naturally breathable materials—plush cotton cover, ultra-fine cashmere, and latex design—are to thank for its coolness and temperature regulation. If you’re a hot sleeper, check out more of the best cooling mattresses for hot sleepers.
Edge Support
Strong edge support means that your mattress is durable and that it holds its shape—especially near the edges. This is exactly what the Birch Luxe mattress does. Because of its firm and heavy build, you can sit or lie on the mattress’s edges without bending them and sliding off onto the floor.
Responsiveness
Responsiveness is how well someone is able to move across the mattress, whether to get more comfortable, for sex, or to get up. The Birch Luxe’s sturdy design and supportive coils offer a bounce that keeps you from sinking down.
Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?
Motion isolation is well movement stays in just one part of the mattress. In other words, no motion isolation means you’ll be waking up your partner every time you move. The Birch Luxe comes in decently with motion isolation. While it isn’t the mattress’s biggest selling point, you (or your partner) can expect to sleep soundly.
Noise
The Birch Luxe’s weight-distributing coils can cause some squeaking noises when someone is lying on the bed. Although not loud, the Birch Luxe is more noisy than an all-foam mattress.
Pain Relief
For heavier sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers, the Birch Luxe’s firmness and support reduces back, neck, shoulder, and hip pain. However, for lightweight sleepers and some side sleepers, the mattress’s solid build can be uncomfortable in the back and hips.
Sex
The Birch Luxe’s responsive design, edge support, and cooling materials make the mattress more usable and comfortable for sex. However, the mattress’s supportive coils can create squeaking which may be problematic for some couples.
Off-Gassing
Since the Birch Luxe mattress is made of natural materials like wool, unboxing it can smell, well, like unboxing a sheep. Although sleeping in a barnyard might sound less than ideal, the mattress’s organic smell should clear within a couple of days.
Durability
The Birch Luxe’s strong edge support and long-lasting materials mean that purchasers can expect to continue enjoying their mattress past the average mattress lifespan of seven years. Additionally, Birch provides a 25-year warranty on the Birch Luxe with the first 10 years being non-prorated, or with complete coverage.
Birch Luxe Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?
The Birch Luxe mattress features organic, natural, and luxury materials that provide a soft, supportive, and cooling feel to the mattress’s sturdy and firm build. The top layers of the mattress have an insulating and luxurious feel, while the supportive layers reduce pressure and comfortably distribute weight.
Layer #1: Cotton Mattress Cover
The top layer is a quilted euro top made of organic cotton plush that is breathable and soft.
Layer #2: Wool Comforter Layer
Below the mattress cover are several layers of wool which act as fire barriers and comfort layers to cushion the firm Birch Luxe mattress. The organic wool within these layers is naturally hydroscopic and pulls moistures from the air, increasing breathability and airflow.
Layer #3: Latex Foam Comfort Layer
Next, the foam comfort layer provides pressure relief and support through a naturally bouncy and cooling latex foam.
Layer #4: Steel Coil Support Layer
Finally, the support layer of the Birch Luxe mattress includes individually wrapped steel coils. These coils boost the durability and support of the mattress while also creating an even distribution of weight across the bed.

Warranty
If you decide to keep your mattress, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy it with a 25-year warranty. To protect the condition of your mattress and qualify for your warranty, be sure to place your Birch Luxe on a frame with slats less than 5” apart.

Once the first 10 years are up, your Birch Luxe warranty moves to limited coverage. Instead of guaranteed full coverage, Birch will decide whether to replace or repair your mattress at a prorated charge.
Specifically, for each year of limited coverage, mattress replacements will cost you an additional 5% of the total cost, starting at 50% on year 11.
