Both beds in this mattress comparison come with multiple firmness options: the Brooklyn Signature is available in soft, medium, and firm. We’ve personally tested the medium Brooklyn Signature, and give it a 6/10 firmness level rating. The flippable Layla mattress has a medium-soft side and a medium-firm side. The softer side falls around 4/10, and the firmer side is close to 7/10.

What Do the Brooklyn Bedding & Layla Mattresses Feel Like?

Both of these beds have motion-isolating foam comfort layers, but the support foam at the core of the Layla absorbs motion a little better than the coils at the base of the Brooklyn Signature.

Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 lbs)

Average-weight back sleepers will likely get the support they need on the “medium” version of the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid, and side sleepers will likely find adequate pressure relief and spinal alignment in the medium version of the Signature Hybrid. Average-weight stomach sleepers probably won’t find the support they need in the medium Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress, but they might find proper support in the firm version of the bed while combination sleepers will likely be able to change positions easily on the medium version of the mattress.

For average-weight back sleepers, Layla ensures proper spinal alignment and helps ease back pain. Similar combination sleepers will find this relatively responsive for motion transfer. Side and stomach sleepers might experience sinking in the hips on this bed, therefore, should opt for a firmer mattress.

Heavyweight Sleepers (> 230 lbs)

If you’re a heavyweight back sleeper or someone who prefers an ultra-firm mattress, the “firm” version of the Signature Hybrid could work for you. Side sleepers and combination sleepers will likely find adequate pressure relief and spinal alignment but stomach sleepers probably won’t find the support they need in the medium Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress, but they might find proper support in the firm version of the bed.

Layla is not ideal for heavyweight back sleepers because of the mattress’s all-foam construction. Side, stomach, and combination sleepers reported to feel sinking on the hips and may need a firmer mattress.

Lightweight Sleepers (< 130 lbs)

Lightweight back sleepers will likely get the support they need on the “medium” version of the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid. The “soft” version of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid should be good for side sleepers but stomach sleepers may find proper support in the medium version of the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid. Combination sleepers will likely be able to change positions easily on the medium version.

Layla’s firm mattress may give enough support for lightweight back sleepers, as well as for stomach and side sleepers who should find enough support on the Layla. Combination sleepers should feel easy to move around on and relatively responsive, especially on the firmer side of the bed.

Differences in Mattress Construction

The Layla mattress is flippable and comes with a color-coded cover that provides visual cues for which side is which. The Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress is a great example of an affordable hybrid bed with three foam layers used in the mattress.

The Brooklyn Signature is wrapped in a soft, breathable polyester mattress cover. Layla’s four layers of foam are encased in a cooling mattress cover that’s infused with heat-absorbing ThermoGel.

Comfort Layers

The top layer is Brooklyn Bedding’s proprietary TitanFlex foam that easily compresses under pressure and rapidly springs back to shape when you change positions (a great feature for combination sleepers). The soft side is topped with 3” of gel and copper-infused memory foam.

Support Layers

The coil system rests on a thin layer of support foam and improves the overall support and airflow of the mattress. The core of the mattress is a dense layer of support foam that gives the mattress structure and durability.

Between these two beds, the Hybrid has a more cooling construction because of its gel-infused top layers and breathable coil base.

Temperature

If you run hot or cold at night, you need a mattress that keeps a neutral temperature profile. Both the Brooklyn Signature and Layla incorporate temperature-regulating gel memory foam and breathable base layers. Even so, the breathability of the coils at the base of the Brooklyn Signature gives it a cooling edge over the Layla. If you love memory foam, the Layla is still a relatively cool option, but it’s noticeably warmer than the Brooklyn Signature.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer can cause sleep disruptions if you share your bed, so it’s especially important for couples. In general, memory foam isolates motion better than coils because coils have a natural bounce-back. Both of these beds have motion-isolating foam comfort layers, but the support foam at the core of the Layla absorbs motion a little better than the coils at the base of the Brooklyn Signature. We don’t think couples will notice major motion disruptions on either bed, but if you’re an especially light sleeper, the Layla is the better choice.

Edge Support

Edge support is an important category for sleepers who share their bed or for anyone planning to use the edges of their bed for daily tasks (ex: putting your shoes on in the morning). Mattresses with reinforced edges—like extra firm springs or high-density foam—provide the best edge support.

The Brooklyn Signature has firmer coils around its perimeter, but the Layla doesn’t have any extra edge support elements. Predictably, we felt better supported around the sides of the Brooklyn Signature mattress. On the Layla, we felt more supported on the firm side than on the soft side.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is a performance category that demonstrates how well a mattress cushions your bumpier bits. Mattresses with lots of pressure relief have a cloud-like feel, thanks to deep contouring around pressure points. Depending on your sleeping position, you’ll need more or less pressure relief. For example, side sleepers need ample sinkage around their shoulders and hips, while stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress to keep their lower back supported.

Pain Relief

Good posture is important to avoid neck and back pain, but did you know that you can have bad posture while sleeping? Your spine naturally has gentle curves, and when it’s repeatedly pulled out of that shape, that puts strain on your muscles. You’ve experienced the effects of poor sleeping posture if you’ve ever woken up with a sore neck or lower back.

Mattresses that support spinal alignment evenly distribute your body weight, so your spine stays in a neutral position. We found that both of these mattresses sustained good spinal alignment, but the Brooklyn Signature did a slightly better job for side and back sleepers, while the firm side of the Layla was better for lightweight stomach sleepers. When you spend hundreds of dollars on a mattress, you want it to last for as long as possible. Generally, hybrid and memory foam mattresses last longer than innerspring mattresses. We think you can expect at least six to seven years from the Brooklyn Signature and Layla, though they may last up to a decade.
