WinkBed vs. Helix Overview
The WinkBed is better for heavier folks (> 230 lbs), hot sleepers, and combination sleepers who change positions while sleeping. The Helix Midnight is more budget-friendly and offers superior pressure relief and motion isolation.
WinkBed is best for… | Helix is best for… |
Soft and firm mattress fans | Shoppers on a budget |
Heavyweight people | Memory foam fans |
People with lower back pain | Couples and those who co-sleep |
Who Should Choose the WinkBed Mattress?
- Soft and firm mattress fans: The WinkBed comes in four firmness levels that range from medium-soft to very firm. As such, it’s a good option for people who prefer the extremes in comfort.
- Heavyweight people: The WinkBed Plus model is made with those over 230 lbs in mind. It’s constructed with durable materials, including latex foam that’s responsive, cool, and resists sinkage.
- People with lower back pain: The WinkBed’s zoned coils provide extra support for the lower back and hips. The zoning also helps to evenly distribute body weight, which improves spinal alignment (aka, good sleeping posture).
Who Should Choose the Helix Mattress?
- Shoppers on a budget: The Helix Midnight is on the more affordable end of the hybrid mattress price spectrum.
- Memory foam fans: The memory foam top layer of the Helix bed has a distinct memory foam hugging feel. This cradling foam sensation is what people who love memory foam typically look for in a bed.
- Couples and those who co-sleep: The Helix’s memory foam comfort layer does an impressive job of dampening motion transfer. Couples and those who share their bed with pets or kids won’t have to worry about feeling every move their sleep partner makes.
WinkBed vs. Helix: Top Similarities
- Temperature Control: The Helix and WinkBed both have breathable builds that enable warm air to escape from the core of the mattress. The WinkBed sleeps a little cooler, but we think both beds stay at a comfortably neutral temperature.
- Durable design: Both mattresses are more durable than average thanks to thick innerspring coils layers supported by high-density base foam.
- Edge Support: We felt supported whether sitting or lying near the edges of both the Helix and WinkBed.
WinkBed vs. Helix: Top Differences
- Feel: Even though these are both hybrid mattresses, the Helix has the deeply contouring feel and slow response of a memory foam top layer, while the WinkBed has a traditional, cushioning pillow top feel.
- Body Type Compatibility: The WinkBed Plus mattress is the version of the original WinkBed that’s designed for those over 230 lbs. Predictably, it’s the better choice for heavyweight and plus-size sleepers, particularly for stomach or back sleeping. The Helix Midnight works for heavyweight side sleepers, but the Helix Plus mattress is a better Helix bed for heavyweight sleepers.
- Responsiveness: The WinkBed mattress is easier to move around on since it’s topped with responsive polyfoam. In contrast, the Helix is topped with slow-moving memory foam that requires a little more effort to compress.
- Motion Isolation: The Helix Midnight has a memory foam layer that reduces the amount of movement felt across the mattress surface. The WinkBed allows much more motion to transfer from one side of the bed to the other.
WinkBed vs. Helix: Firmness & Feel Differences
Firmness and feel are important factors to consider when choosing a mattress, read on to know more about it in this section.
What’s the Firmness of the WinkBed & Helix Mattresses?
The WinkBed mattress comes in four firmness options—Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus. The Helix Midnight is a medium-firm mattress with a balanced contouring feel that’s a good fit for every sleeping position, depending on your body type.
What Do the WinkBed & Helix Mattresses Feel Like?
With a Euro pillow top, WinkBed feels soft and body-conforming. It also has a moisture-absorbing exterior that keeps you cool and dry while you sleep. The Helix Midnight feels like a hotel bed—cushioning on top that’s balanced by a supportive, springy coil base. You’ll sink an inch or two into the memory foam top layer and feel the foam contouring around your curves.
What’s It Like to Sleep On the WinkBed & Helix Mattresses?
While both mattresses are well-suited to all sleeping positions, the multiple firmness levels of the WinkBed are better for people who like beds that are softer or firmer than average. We recommend the Helix Midnight mattress for couples for its great motion isolation, which is ideal for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers.
The WinkBed vs. Helix Mattresses By Body Type
WinkBed Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 4 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 4 | 4 | 3 |
Helix Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 4 | 4 | 5 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 4 | 4 | 5 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 3 | 3 | 4 |
1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent
Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 lbs)
If you’re an average-weight back sleeper, you’ll probably prefer the luxury-firm or firmer WinkBed; if you’re an average-weight stomach sleeper, you’ll probably prefer the firmer or plus WinkBed. In the same way, average-weight side sleepers will appreciate the softer WinkBed that relieves pressure. The Helix’s contouring promotes lateral spinal alignment in average-weight side sleepers. For average-weight back sleepers, the Helix offers great comfort and support.
Heavyweight Sleepers (> 230 lbs)
Heavyweight side sleepers might need a little extra firmness to prevent sinking too deep, so the luxury-firm WinkBed is a good option. Since the Helix is a hybrid mattress, heavyweight back sleepers should work just fine, however, for ensured comfort, we recommend the Helix Plus. Be mindful that the Helix Midnight has a memory foam top layer that slows the bed down when it comes to responsiveness, that means it may be hard for heavyweight combination sleepers to change positions throughout the night.
Lightweight Sleepers (< 130 lbs)
Lightweight back sleepers will probably be most comfortable on the luxury firm or firmer WinkBed. The Helix Midnight was designed for side sleepers of all weights. Weight will not accumulate under major pressure points in lightweight side sleepers. Similarly, lightweight stomach sleepers should expect little to no lower back arching when they are positioned on their stomachs.
Differences in Mattress Construction
The WinkBed is a hybrid mattress, meaning that it is constructed with both coils and foam—it stands 13.5” tall. While the Helix Midnight is made with high-grade materials—from its soft fabric cover and comfort foams to the wrapped coil support layer. It stands 12” tall and comes in all standard mattress sizes.
WinkBed Mattress Materials | Helix Mattress Materials |
Eucalyptus-Derived Tencel Cover | Soft Touch Design Cover |
Euro Pillow Top with Gel-Infused Foam | Memory Plus Foam |
Individually-Wrapped Pocketed Coils | Helix Dynamic Foam |
Extra-Edge Support System | Pocketed Coils |
High-Density Base Foam |
Cover
The exterior of the WinkBed is made of TENCEL, which is a performance fabric made from eucalyptus wood fibers, the cover is designed to keep you cool and dry as you sleep by absorbing moisture. The Midnight’s cover feels soft to the touch and has a slight stretch—it’s optimized for airflow to help keep you cool at night.
Comfort Layers
This quilted pillow top makes the WinkBed cushioning and supportive, while the gel-infused HyperSoft foam in the pillow top is designed not to retain heat like traditional memory foam. Beneath the cover of the Helix is a 2” layer of Helix’s proprietary Memory Plus Foam, which has a medium firmness designed to relieve pressure on the joints, such as the shoulders and the hips.
Support Layers
The WinkBed’s support layer of coils provides targeted back support that helps to keep you comfortable and correctly aligned. Hundreds of individually wrapped coils cradle your body and provide added support in the Helix Midnight.

WinkBed vs. Helix Mattress Performance Ratings & Differences
For each section, we describe how the two mattresses compare. Check out the performance scores and commentary from the individual mattress reviews.
The WinkBed 4.5/5
The WinkBed is a solid mid-range hybrid mattress, with some great features like temperature regulation, strong edge support, and responsive materials. Having a variety of firmnesses to choose from, the WinkBed will work well for a wide variety of sleepers.
The Helix 4.3/5
The Helix Midnight provides tailored support and a medium-firm feel geared toward back sleepers. The hybrid construction promotes airflow to keep you cool, while the foam layers provide cradling and support where you need it.
Temperature
The WinkBed stays a little cooler than the Helix. WinkBeds uses cooling gel in the top foam layers to help move body heat away from the sleeping surface. Helix’s top layer is memory foam, a material more prone to heat retention than WinkBeds’ polyfoam, and it doesn’t have any cooling innovations in this layer. However, we think both will stay cool enough for the average sleeper.
Motion Transfer
All-foam mattresses are typically the best at limiting motion transfer, but hybrid mattresses with thick foam layers are a close second. The Helix earned an almost perfect score for motion isolation, but the WinkBed doesn’t dampen motion as well. If you’re a light sleeper, the Helix is definitely the better option.
Edge Support
Both the Helix and the WinkBed have durable and sturdy edges thanks to extra-strong springs that line their perimeters. The Helix and Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus versions of the WinkBed offer the best edge support
Pressure Relief
When we pulled out our pressure map, we noticed very little pressure build-up in all sleeping positions on the Helix. The WinkBed’s pressure relief will vary depending on the firmness level you choose. The Softer model is the best for side sleepers, though heavyweight side sleepers should choose the WinkBed Plus.
Pain Relief
The firmer WinkBed options are great for those with back pain, especially lower back pain, since they keep your hips lifted in alignment with your shoulders. The Midnight should at least prevent new back pain for everyone besides heavyweight back and stomach sleepers. The Midnight is also pressure-relieving enough for most folks with joint pain to sleep comfortably.
Durability
The Helix and WinkBed have similar durability levels, with each mattress likely to last seven to 10 years.
Shipping, Returns, & Warranties
WinkBed
WinkBeds mattresses offer free shipping and are only available in the continental U.S. The WinkBeds return policy comes with a 120-night trial period with a 30-day adjustment period. Between nights 30–120 of owning the mattress, you can return it for a full refund. Every WinkBeds mattress is backed by a generous Lifetime warranty that covers defects, including body impressions greater than 1.5”. Another perk is WinkBeds’ 50 percent replacement guarantee.

If you decide it’s not right for you, contact Helix customer service to organize a return. The Helix Midnight mattress has a 10-year warranty. The WinkBed mattress is best for people who like a soft or firm feel, hot sleepers, heavyweight people, and combination sleepers. The Helix mattress is a better choice for most budget-conscious consumers, light sleepers who share the bed, and people who love the hugging feel of memory foam. Both beds come with risk-free sleep trials, so you only keep your new bed if it’s the best mattress for you.
WinkBed & Helix FAQs
Where are WinkBeds manufactured?
Orlando, Florida. All of their materials are American-sourced, and WinkBeds are designed with CertiPUR-US certified foams in all their mattresses to ensure that their products are high-quality.
How firm is the Helix Midnight mattress?
Helix says the Midnight mattress has a medium firmness that could feel softer or firmer to different people, depending on their body type and comfort preferences. We give the Helix Midnight a 6/10 firmness rating, which is a little firmer than average and a good fit for most sleepers.
Will I overheat on the Helix Midnight?
We think the Helix Midnight stays temperature neutral, though if you sleep in a warm room, the memory foam layer may cause you to overheat. We always recommend keeping the temperature of your bedroom between 62–68 degrees and adjusting your bedding until you reach a comfortable temperature.
