The Mattress Nerd’s Take: The Idle Latex Hybrid mattress is a flippable bed made with sturdy innerspring coils and layers of eco-friendly latex (in Dunlop or Talalay latex). Since the bed is available in two firmness levels and comes with a generous 18-month trial period, we think many shoppers will find that it’s well worth its hefty price tag. While it’s not ideal for lightweight side sleepers, the Idle Latex Hybrid should keep the hips and torso properly elevated in stomach sleepers and back sleepers. For similar options, check out the best latex mattresses.

Who is the Idle Latex Hybrid Mattress Best For?
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 3 |
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): | 5 | 4 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 4 | 4 | 5 |
1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers of all different body types should find comfort and support on this bed, thanks to its two firmness levels. Our team recommends that lightweight back sleepers choose the bed’s medium-firmness level instead of the luxury firm, especially if they’re searching for a little cradling and softness along with hip-elevating support. On the other hand, plus-size back sleepers should go for the luxury-firm version to obtain optimal spine alignment and keep the hips properly supported. For average-weight back sleepers, choosing a firmness level comes down to individual preference. This mattress features two sides with a different firmness on each, so sleepers can try different options. The Idle is a great mattress for back sleepers to protect the spine and evenly distribute the body weight.
Stomach Sleepers
The trick to finding a great bed for a stomach sleeper is choosing a mattress that’s supportive enough to keep the hips elevated and the spine curved in its natural position. Thanks to the supportive coil system that runs through the middle of this mattress, lightweight, average-weight and heavier stomach sleepers should feel aligned on this bed. Be sure to purchase the mattress in a luxury-firm option, and if you’re set on an ultra-supportive mattress, the Dunlop latex construction will be a bit more supportive than Talalay latex. For other supportive mattresses, see the best mattress for stomach sleepers.
Side Sleepers
While this bed earns top marks for stomach and back sleepers, some side sleepers may find that the firmness options available in the Idle Latex Hybrid don’t accommodate sensitive joints like the hips and shoulders. Heavyweight side sleepers should enjoy this relatively firm mattress and feel their hips sinking in enough to achieve lateral spinal alignment. Average-weight side sleepers may want to choose the medium version of the bed to feel a bit more cradled, while even the medium-firmness level might not offer enough softness for lightweight side sleepers. For a mattress with more contouring and pressure relief, check out the best mattress for side sleepers.
Combination Sleepers
Combination sleepers, or those who switch sleep positions throughout the night, need a responsive bed that allows for easy movement. Unlike a mattress with foam layers, the Idle’s latex layers allow for plenty of bounce as a sleeper moves around on the mattress. Lightweight, average-weight and heavier combination sleepers should be able to find a firmness level that suits them in this mattress, but consider the sleeping position you spend the most time in (side, back or stomach) and choose a firmness level that matches that position as well as your body type. For responsive mattresses that make changing positions easily, see the best mattress for combination sleepers.
Idle Latex Hybrid Video Review
How Does the Idle Latex Hybrid Mattress Feel?
Responsiveness, Bounce and Ease of Movement
The Idle Latex Hybrid uses a 3” layer of latex as a comfort layer, which impacts much of the bed’s feel and responsiveness. Because latex is derived from rubber trees, the material is bouncy and keeps the body from feeling bogged down or “stuck” in the mattress. The 6” layer of coils in the middle of the bed also contributes to its bounce, giving this bed a hotel-bed feel. Combination sleepers should feel comfortable moving into different positions atop this bed, and those with mobility issues shouldn’t feel much difficulty getting in and out of bed. If you are looking for other naturally derived ingredients used in your mattress construction, see the best organic mattresses.
How Firm Is This Mattress?
The Idle Latex Hybrid mattress comes in two firmness levels: a medium firmness and a luxury firm version. Because the mattress is double-sided, sleepers can select a different firmness level for each side or the same firmness level for both sides. Based on our 1-10 mattress firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest, we rated the medium a 6/10 in firmness and the luxury firm a 7/10 in firmness. Back sleepers and stomach sleepers will especially appreciate the support, but this bed is great for some side sleepers as well. There’s not too big of a difference in feel between the luxury-firm and medium-firm version, but we recommend that heavier sleepers choose the luxury-firm option for a bit of extra support, while lightweight and average-weight side sleepers should choose the medium-firm version. If you are in need of a supportive mattress, check out the best mattress for heavy people.
Does It Sleep Hot?
If you’re prone to waking up in the middle of the night sweating, you’ll want to look for a mattress with plenty of breathability and airflow. While materials like memory foam tend to leave sleepers feeling trapped in their mattress and stifled temperature-wise, latex (the material used in the Idle Latex Hybrid) is more breathable and airy. The coils in the center of the mattress also allow for airflow, making this bed a great option for folks who need extra cooling capabilities in their mattress. For other mattresses that feature cooling components, see our picks for the best mattress for hot sleepers.
Is the Idle Latex Hybrid Mattress Good For Couples?
Couples who sleep in the same bed tend to look for mattresses that isolate motion well, or keep movement on the side of the bed where it originally occurs. That way, if a sleep partner gets in and out of bed during the night, the other person in bed is less likely to feel their movement and wake up. Because the Idle Latex Hybrid mattress uses bouncy and responsive latex in its construction, we saw motion transfer quite easily across the surface of this mattress. So, couples looking for a responsive bed may have to forgo top-notch motion isolation for cooling and responsiveness. If motion isolation is a top priority for you, check out the best mattress for couples.
How’s the Edge Support?
The Idle Latex Hybrid excels in edge support, or the strength of a mattress along its outside perimeter. In our in-house mattress testing lab, our team was able to sit and lie along the edge of the mattress without feeling unstable or insecure. This is great news for anyone who likes to sit along the edge of the bed or has a partner who takes up more of their fair share of the bed, forcing them to spread out to the edge.
Construction: What’s Under the Surface?
This flippable mattress is made with natural materials like latex and organic cotton, which is perfect for sleepers who care for the environment and still want a supportive bed. While it might be a little too firm and supportive for some side sleepers, the construction is great for back and stomach sleepers. Because the construction layers are the same on either side of the 6” coil core, the following construction notes start at the top of the mattress and end at the coil core.
Layer #1: Organic Cotton Cover: The construction layers within the Idle Latex Hybrid are covered by a layer of organic cotton that feels fresh, plush and comforting when you run your hand along it. We appreciate the sturdy feel of this layer and the inch of organic wool woven into the top of the bed for added comfort.
Layer #2: Latex Comfort Layer: This 3” layer of latex offers more bounce than memory foam and a breathable surface for those who struggle with sleeping hot. Shoppers can choose between Talalay and Dunlop latex, but you’ll find a bit of extra support with Dunlop latex.
Layer #3: Coil Support Layer: While this layer is a low-profile addition to the mattress, it sits right above the layer of coils in the mattress and offers pressure relief, especially for side sleepers.
Layer #4: Individually Wrapped Coils: Adding breathability and support to the mattress, this 6” layer of coils runs through the entire bed and serves as the “core” of this flippable mattress. They’re great for supporting heavier sleepers and helping to ensure spinal alignment. Check out the best innerspring mattresses for a variety of coil constructions designed to provide support and promote airflow.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?
Shipping & Unboxing
Free shipping is included with the purchase of a mattress from Idle Sleep. Once the mattress has been shipped, it should arrive within two to six business days. Our in-house mattress testing team took around three minutes to unbox the mattress, which is longer than the average time of less than one minute. This bed is very hefty (a Queen-size mattress weighs 150 lbs.), so we recommend enlisting the help of a friend to unbox the bed.
Warranty
Idle Sleep offers a Lifetime warranty for the Idle Latex Hybrid mattress, meaning customers can receive a repair or replacement mattress under certain conditions. The warranty covers manufacturing defects in the bed’s springs and cover, as well as body indentations greater than .5”, which is a more comprehensive policy than we’ve seen among other brands. Be sure to keep the receipt from your purchase, and keep in mind that the warranty is only applicable to the original owner of the product.
Trial Period & Returns
One of our favorite selling points of the Idle Sleep brand is its lengthy 18-month sleep trial. That means customers have up to 548 days to try the mattress out, and they can return the bed within that period of time for a full refund. Still, you’ll have to keep the mattress for at least 30 days before initiating a refund. We agree with this policy because it can take the body up to a month to get used to a new mattress. Many of the best online mattress brands feature similar brand policies and procedures.
Comparing the Idle Mattresses
Idle Latex Hybrid vs. Idle Gel Foam
The Idle Gel Foam mattress is made with layers of foam instead of the Idle Latex Hybrid’s layers of coils and latex. While some memory foam beds are notorious for sleeping hot, the Idle Gel Foam mattress incorporates Cooling Buoyancy Foam made without visco elastic chemicals. One key similarity between both the Idle Gel Foam and the Idle Latex Hybrid is that both beds are flippable to ensure a long lifespan and avoid body indentations.
Though each bed should work relatively well for most sleep positions, heavier sleepers should consider choosing the Idle Latex Hybrid because it offers more support with its coil system. Those who are concerned about environmental sustainability will find more to love in the Idle Latex Hybrid as well, but side sleepers (especially lightweight side sleepers) will appreciate the added softness of the Idle Gel Foam mattress.

Idle Latex Hybrid vs. Idle Gel Plush
Two main factors differentiate the Idle Gel Plush from the Idle Latex Hybrid: construction and firmness level. Instead of being made with latex and coils (like the Idle Latex Hybrid), the Idle Gel Plush is made with gel-infused foam. It offers more cooling capabilities than the Idle Gel Foam mattress, but we still think the Idle Latex Hybrid offers more relief for hot sleepers than either all-foam version.
The Idle Gel Plush mattress is a 14” tall bed that’s on the softer side of the firmness scale, making it great for side sleepers and lightweight sleepers. Those who struggle with chronic pain or joint aches will find soft support on the Idle Gel Plush mattress. Heavier sleepers or stomach sleepers looking for extra support should appreciate the Idle Latex Hybrid, especially if they select the luxury-firm version.

Idle Latex Hybrid vs. Idle Hybrid
Both the Idle Latex Hybrid and the Idle Hybrid mattress are available in the same two firmness levels: medium and luxury firm. They’re each flippable, which helps prolong the life of the mattress, and they’re situated at a similar price point. The warranty and trial period policies backing the Idle Latex Hybrid and Idle Hybrid are identical.
Still, while the Idle Latex Hybrid includes a 3” layer of latex on either side of its 6” tall innerspring coils, the Idle Hybrid’s coils are flanked on either side by a 2” layer of cooling buoyancy foam. This foam may not be as cooling as the natural latex, but it should offer adequate comfort and cushioning for sleepers with sensitive joints.

Idle Latex Hybrid vs. Other Brands
Idle Latex Hybrid vs. Avocado Green Mattress
Like the Idle Latex Hybrid, the Avocado Green mattress is an eco-friendly bed made with coils and latex. The constructions of these two beds differ in that the Avocado uses only Dunlop latex and 2 additional inches of coils compared to the Idle Latex Hybrid mattress. The Avocado’s medium-firm feel is great for body contouring, and we expect the lifespan of the mattress to be lengthy.
Though the Avocado Green mattress is a bit less expensive than the Idle Latex Hybrid, both are praise-worthy beds for those seeking a good value. Avocado and Idle Sleep both offer competitive warranties (25 years and Lifetime, respectively), especially considering that the average warranty in the bed-in–a-box mattress industry lasts 10 years.
The Avocado Green is a hybrid mattress made from organic materials that’s great for back sleepers, hot sleepers, and combination sleepers. However, this mattress doesn’t have the strongest motion isolation or edge support, making it less than ideal for couples and seniors.

Idle Latex Hybrid vs. Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress
Another latex bed, the Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress, mirrors the Idle Latex Hybrid in its materials and its emphasis on eco-friendly design. Priced just a bit below the Idle Latex Hybrid before discounts, the Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress uses zoned Talalay latex to provide additional support for the back. Recycled steel makes up the zoned pocketed coils that run through the middle of the Saatva Latex Hybrid, making it ideal for heavier sleepers who want extra support that doesn’t come at too high of an environmental cost.
Though the Saatva Latex Hybrid isn’t a flippable bed like the Idle Latex Hybrid, both beds should have a similar feel and ensure spinal alignment in most back and stomach sleepers. Still, each bed may feel a bit too firm for some side sleepers.
The Saatva Latex Hybrid is a luxury mattress with a nice balance of comfort and support. It's made with natural latex, organic cotton and wool, and pocketed coils. We recommend it to back or stomach sleepers and those prone to overheating at night.

Idle Latex Hybrid vs. Layla Hybrid Mattress
The Layla Hybrid mattress is a flippable bed that uses coils and foam to ensure a supportive, yet soft feel. While customers can choose the firmness level of the Idle Latex Hybrid, the Layla Hybrid mattress is made in one style: a firm feel on one side with a soft feel on the other.
Both of these beds excel in edge support (in fact, the Layla includes extra-strong coils along the perimeter for extra support), but the Layla Hybrid’s foam layers make the bed better at motion isolation than the Idle.
The Layla Hybrid mattress resembles the original Layla in temperature neutrality, comfort and dual-firmness. In addition, the hybrid's pocketed coil core improves edge support and responsiveness.

The Idle Latex Hybrid mattress is an eco-friendly, hypoallergenic mattress made with antimicrobial materials. Our team loves that customers can choose between two different firmness levels, which collectively will offer support and softness for most sleeper types. Couples who choose the Idle Latex Hybrid may have to give up a bit of motion isolation in return for edge support and cooling capabilities, but we think the trade-off will be well worth it for most sleepers.
