Ikea Daybed Review

Sometimes we need an extra bed in our house, but don’t always have the room for one. During various times throughout the year, we have family and guests coming through who all need a place to sleep. Even if you do have a guest bedroom, when you have more than a couple of people staying with you, you can find yourself in need of more space quickly! That is where daybeds come in. They can double as sleeping space and daytime seating in any room of the house. 

There are six styles of IKEA Daybeds—five types made of pine and other woods (Hemnes, Ütaker, Brimnes, Flekke, Fyresdal, Markerad) and a sixth, which is made of steel. 

IKEA Daybeds 

The IKEA Hemnes daybed style is the best-selling version in the bunch. It has a back (solid or slatted) along three sides and comes with two drawers of storage for extra bedding. It also has a trundle bed. When fully extended, you can fit two twin-size mattresses to sleep, two adults. You can also buy two IKEA foam mattresses (Meistervik) that fit the frame itself.

The Ütaker is two-bed frames that you can stack on top of each other to turn it into a couch. Pull them apart and place them side by side and you have two twin beds. One set comes with 2 mattresses, the other does not.

The Brimnes echoes the Hemnes except it doesn’t have a back to it. You can turn the daybed into a seating area with pillows against the wall or simply use it as a bed. You can buy the frame alone or the frame with the Meistervik mattresses.

The Fyresdal comes with or without mattresses and is the lone metal style. It’s super simple. There are no additional features. It’s just a daybed with three-sided back support.

The Flekke is another wooden daybed. The base model has a backing section for one corner and comes with 2 drawers. The upgraded model also comes with two mattresses.

Finally, the Markerad, is a flat, wooden daybed foundation that comes with or without a Bonnell spring mattress. A spring mattress will be sturdier. 

Daybeds can be one of the smartest purchases you can make if you put them in the right place. Making them up for daily sitting use or being able to turn them down to accommodate an overnight guest makes for the perfect piece of furniture if you ask me! When used as a seating area, you can customize and easily change the look of the daybed with pillows and cushions that suit your taste.

All but one of the IKEA styles has a trundle underneath the main sleep area to accommodate two adults when necessary.

The IKEA brand of daybeds is fairly affordable. You’ll pay between $200-$600 to set yourself up with extra bedding or extra seating. You can buy a metal frame, or a wood and particleboard/fiberboard versions with solid wood backing or slatted backing, depending on your needs.

Warranty

IKEA gives a 10-year limited warranty on many of its products. If you have a problem with the product, IKEA will decide if your daybed is defective or damaged. If the daybed is deemed defective, you will get the repairs for free, but if IKEA determines you caused the damage the repairs will be out of pocket.

Shipping and returns

IKEA charges a flat rate of $49 to deliver large items to your home and into the room of your choice when you order online. If you’re buying your daybed frame from inside an IKEA store, ask a customer service person how much it will cost to have your purchase delivered to your door. 

You have 365 days to return items for a full refund. You’ll need proof of purchase, but keep in mind that IKEA won’t accept dirty, stained, damaged or abused items. 

Sleep Experience

Ikea daybeds are easy solutions to a common problem-needing more sleeping space. As far as a sleeping surface goes, they are not likely to provide the same comfort as a traditional bed, but they can definitely do the trick for a couple of nights. since they are typically used in a temporary setting, they usually do not cause any problems. 

IKEA sells a Meistervik foam mattress, which is advertised to fit the daybeds well. The Meistervik is a 5-inch memory foam mattress, and IKEA claims other standard size twin mattresses may not fit the daybed frames. It is not a very thick mattress, that’s why even the twin-size daybed frames come with two of the mattresses. You can always purchase a sturdier mattress if IKEA’s is just not going to cut it, just make sure you have a trial period in case it does not fit.

Conclusion

Daybeds are easy, temporary sleeping solutions for rooms in your home when you need to accommodate one or two people overnight. 

As far as a sleep surface goes, it is definitely better than having your guests sleep on the floor, but not as luxurious as having an entire guest bed for them. The mattresses that IKEA sells you for their daybeds, isn’t the most durable or comfortable, so consider all your options before buying their mattress. At the end of the day, if versatility and efficiency is your goal, then the IKEA daybeds are good, affordable options.
