Is the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress one of the best all-foam beds for lightweight sleepers? Read on to learn more about this mattress, plus its pros and cons.
Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress for You?
Who’s Going to Love the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress
- Back sleepers—What makes the Mint mattress so great for back sleepers is its ideal balance of support and softness which keeps your back aligned properly and your spine cushioned.
- Combination sleepers—Combination sleepers love to change positions throughout the night, and a responsive, bouncy mattress makes that a lot easier. Fortunately for these sleepers, Tuft & Needle’s Mint bed is exactly that.
- Lightweight sleepers—Lighter sleepers (those under 130 lbs) tend to need more cushioning. As a soft, foam bed, the Mint mattress does an excellent job of providing pressure relief for lightweight sleepers, regardless of their preferred sleeping positions.
Who Should Steer Clear of the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress
- Couples—One possible red flag for couples is that the Mint mattress lacks motion isolation. In other words, if you share this bed, you’ll likely feel your partner tossing and turning. For an all-foam bed with stellar motion isolation, check out the Nectar mattress.
- Heavier stomach sleepers—Heavyweight stomach sleepers, over 230 lbs, tend to prefer more firmness to prevent their hips from sinking. Unfortunately, the Mint’s cushioning, all-foam design falls short here. Instead, for a hybrid mattress on the firmer side, check out the Titan Plus.
- Hot sleepers—The Tuft & Needle Mint actually has decent temperature control for a foam bed, but all-foam mattresses tend to be warmer in general. If you’re looking for a super cooling foam bed, check out the Nectar Premier Copper.

Tuft & Needle Mint Video Review
Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Firmness & Feel
Now that we’ve touched on the basics of the Tuft & Needle Mint, let’s go into more detail about how this bed actually feels.
Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Firmness
At Mattress Nerd, we measure mattress firmness on a scale of 1–10, with “1” being softer than a cloud and “10” being firmer than your floor. So, based on that, we found the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress to be a 6/10 on our scale. In other words, we would classify this foam bed as medium-firm.
This level of firmness is pretty standard and works for average-weight sleepers and lightweight sleepers too. However, some heavier sleepers (those over 230 lbs) may prefer more firmness.
What Does the Tuft & Needle Mint Feel Like?
The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress has the softness and “sinking” feel you’d expect from an all-foam bed, but it’s also noticeably responsive and bouncy. And, while it’s not the most cooling mattress on the market, the bed’s graphite infused top layers do provide a cooling feel.
What Sleeping Position Is Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Best For?
Body Type: | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers |
Lightweight< 130 lbs: | 5 | 5 | 4 |
Average-weight130–230 lbs: | 5 | 4 | 4 |
Heavyweight> 230 lbs: | 4 | 3 | 4 |
1 = Very poor 2 = Not good 3 = Fair 4 = Good 5 = Excellent
Back Sleepers
With a medium-firm feel and plenty of cushioning, the Tuft & Needle Mint is one of the best mattresses for back sleepers, especially those who are lightweight. For average-weight sleepers too, this bed does a great job of keeping the lower back supported and aligned, but heavyweight back sleepers may still want a little more firmness.
Side Sleepers
The best mattresses for side sleepers keep the back aligned and pressure off of the hips and shoulders. Overall, the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress has enough pressure relief and support for most kinds of side sleepers, especially average-weight side sleepers. However, heavyweight and lightweight side sleepers may notice a slight amount of pressure at their hips and shoulders.
Stomach Sleepers
The best mattresses for stomach sleepers are usually on the more firm side. This is because stomach sleepers need extra lift to keep their hips from sinking down. With the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress, lightweight and average-weight stomach sleepers should be able to get plenty of support, but heavyweight stomach sleepers will likely need a firmer bed.
Combination Sleepers
Last, but not least, let’s talk about combination sleepers, or those who switch between sleeping positions. The good news here is that the Mint mattress is responsive enough for most lightweight and average-weight combination sleepers. However, for heavyweight sleepers, the Mint mattress isn’t one of the best mattresses for combination sleepers.
Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Performance
Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Cooling?
This mattress has several cooling top layers that could help it be one of the best cooling mattresses; however, since the Mint is an all-foam bed, its breathability is only about average.
Edge Support
If your mattress has good edge support, then you can sit or lie on its perimeter without the bed warping or sagging. For seniors, or other sleepers with mobility concerns, having this feature can be especially important. With the Tuft & Needle Mint, you’ll get decent edge support, but heavier sleepers may prefer a sturdier bed.
Responsiveness
A responsive bed is bouncy and easy to move around on. In this case, the Mint mattress is one of the most responsive all-foam beds out there, making it a great choice for combination sleepers who like memory foam mattresses.
Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?
Unfortunately, this Tuft & Needle bed is not one of the best mattresses for couples, because it has poor motion isolation. In other words, if you’re sharing the Mint mattress with a partner, you’ll feel their tossing and turning.
Noise
One benefit of all-foam beds is there’s nothing inside of them that can creak. And, the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is no different here.
Pain Relief
While the Mint mattress is a solid choice for most side sleepers, it isn’t one of the best mattresses for shoulder pain. That said, most average-weight and lightweight sleepers should get decent pain relief on this bed.
Sex
If you’re wondering how to tell if a bed is one of the best mattresses for sex, it’s important to check for quietness, temperature control, and responsiveness. In this case, the Mint mattress is two for three with less than ideal cooling.
Off-Gassing
Off-gassing, AKA the “new mattress smell”, is when gasses escape from a bed-in-a-box mattress shortly after it begins expanding. With the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress, this faint odor should clear out within 24–48 hours.
Durability
In general, foam beds aren’t the durable mattresses on the market, and you can expect them to last about seven years. With the Mint mattress, you can expect about the same durability.
Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Construction: What’s It Made Of?
The Tuft & Needle Mint is a 12” all-foam mattress. By using proprietary polyfoam layers, Tuft & Needle achieves above-average pressure relief while maintaining ease of movement. Below the conforming 3” comfort layer is a transitional layer with gel beads that compress and add extra firmness when sufficient weight is applied. The balance between firm support and cushion creates a medium-firm feel that suits lightweight and average-weight folks in every sleeping position.
Plush-Knit Cover—The Mint mattress’s cover is made from a breathable, soft knit fabric.
T&N Adaptive Foam Comfort Layer—This 3” top layer of open-cell foam has a soft-to-medium density, and is both cushioning and responsive. It’s also infused with graphite pieces that help with temperature regulation.
T&N Adaptive Foam Transition Layer—Next is a second, firmer layer of Tuft & Needle’s Adaptive Foam which helps to keep your spine in a healthy, neutral alignment. It’s 2” thick and is infused with ceramic gel beads that further minimize heat retention.
High-Density Foam Support Layer—Lastly, at the bottom of this bed is a 7” thick base layer of durable, high-density polyfoam that keeps the mattress stable and helps reduce motion transfer.
How Much Does the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Cost?

How Do the Policies Measure Up?
Shipping & Unboxing
The Tuft & Needle Mint mattresses ship free to all 48 continental states via FedEx Ground, and arrive within 3–10 business days. The bed comes compressed in a box, hence the term “bed-in-a-box mattress.” T&N can ship to Alaska or Hawaii for an additional fee.
Once the mattress arrives, place it on your foundation to unbox it. Next, grab the ends of the plastic wrap and pull on them to unroll the mattress. Once it’s flat, remove the plastic wrap. The bed should start to expand, which typically only takes a few minutes but can take up to a few days. There will be a temporary odor called off-gassing that should fade within a similar timeframe.
Warranty
Tuft & Needle mattresses come with a 10-year warranty. This limited warranty covers material defects from defective materials or workmanship. Examples include visible sags greater than .75” in the foam layer or a physical flaw in the foam that causes it to split or crack.
Your mattress must be in good condition to qualify for a warranty claim. To safeguard your purchase, we recommend using a waterproof mattress protector along with a sturdy base. The T&N Mint is compatible with box springs in good condition and most bed frames and adjustable bases. Just be sure that if you use a slatted base that the slats are no more than 5” apart.
Trial Period & Returns
When you buy a mattress online from Tuft & Needle, you get to test it out in the comfort of your bedroom during the 100-night sleep trial. Most companies require that you keep your new mattress for at least 30 nights, but T&N allows returns at any time during the trial period for a full refund. T&N works with you to find a local donation or recycling center for mattress pickup.
Addressing Common T&N Mint Mattress Complaints
Not Supportive
Some heavier sleepers have complained that this mattress is not supportive enough, especially for stomach sleeping. We agree that, for many sleepers over 230 lbs, the Tuft & Needle Mint doesn’t have enough firmness.
Too Hot
Also, some reviewers have mentioned that the Tuft & Needle Mint lacks temperature control. While we found that this bed has decent cooling, it’s definitely not a top choice (like many all-foam beds) for hotter sleepers.

People Seeking Pressure Relief | Lightweight Back & Stomach Sleepers |
Hot Sleepers | Average-Weight Back & Side Sleepers |
Couples Concerned About Motion Transfer | Budget-Conscious Shoppers |
The Original Tuft & Needle mattress and Tuft & Needle Mint mattress are made with similar materials and designs, but the Mint is an upgraded version of the Original. Also, the Original is slightly firmer than the Mint and doesn’t have the same pressure-relieving cradle, which makes the Mint better for side sleepers and lightweight people.
The Original is less expensive and has a similar responsive feel that’s great for combination sleepers. Both beds do a good job isolating motion, helping couples sleep better.

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid has two layers of coils that create a much bouncier feel than the all-foam Mint mattress. While both beds sleep cool, the added breathability of the hybrid’s coils is better for hot sleepers.
These two mattresses have a similar firmness that works well for back, stomach, and side sleepers. The Mint delivers superior motion isolation and is, therefore, a good pick for couples.

Most adults are better suited by the Mint thanks to its greater support and pressure relief. But if you’re on a tight budget or shopping for a mattress for a guest room or teenager, the Nod is an excellent option.

The TEMPUR-Cloud is Tempur-Pedic’s most affordable mattress, and the only one available online as a bed in a box. The Cloud is a memory foam mattress with the doughy feel and slow-response that shoppers expect from memory foam mattresses.
The Cloud is firmer than the Mint, making it better for heavy people and firm mattress fans. The Mint sleeps cooler and is easier to move around on. It’s also better for most side sleepers and lightweight folks thanks to a much softer top layer.

The flagship Casper mattress is a mixed foam bed that pairs the responsive breathability of polyfoam with the contouring pressure relief of memory foam. Although it has the same medium-firm firmness as the T&N Mint, Casper’s Zoned Support foam better accommodates bigger bodies.
The Mint sleeps a touch cooler than the Casper mattress, while they are both top picks for couples thanks to sturdy edges and above-average motion isolation.

The Nectar is a memory foam mattress with the traditional “hugging” sensation of memory foam. While it and the Mint are both medium-firm mattresses, the Mint has a slightly softer surface and the Nectar’s takes more time to mold to the body.
If you love the contouring of memory foam, the Nectar might be a better fit, but it does sleep warmer, so hot sleepers should stick with the Mint.

FAQs
Is Tuft & Needle Mint worth it?
Tuft & Needle provides high-quality mattresses at affordable prices, and the Mint is T&N's most luxurious all-foam mattress. With thicker-than-average comfort and transitional foam layers, the Mint offers exceptional pressure relief and opulent comfort for its price. Plus, T&N regularly runs promotions on its mattresses.
Is the Tuft & Needle Mint too soft?
The right firmness varies from one person to another and depends on how you sleep and your body type. The Mint is the correct firmness for most lightweight and average-weight sleepers, no matter their sleeping position. It is, however, too soft for most heavyweight people and firm mattress fans.
Does the Tuft & Needle Mint sleep cool?
The T&N Mint is one of the coolest all-foam mattresses. By utilizing open-cell polyfoams rather than heat-retaining memory foams, the Mint minimizes heat retention. Additionally, the incorporation of cooling graphite and gel beads further supports cool sleep. However, the Mint isn't as cool as most hybrid and innerspring mattresses.
The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?
The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is a great choice for combination sleeping foam mattress lovers. This bed has decent temperature control and edge support, but it isn’t the best for heavier sleepers who need more support. Lastly, the Mint falls short in terms of motion isolation for couples.
