Layla Mattress Firmness and Feel
Layla Mattress Firmness
At Mattress Nerd, we rate firmness on a 1–10 scale, where 1 is the softest. Layla Sleep calls the two sides of the Layla original mattress the “soft” and “firm” sides, but we could more accurately label the sides as medium-soft (4/10) and medium-firm (6.5/10).
The Layla’s more plush soft side is great for lightweight and some average-weight side sleepers who need cradling around the hips and shoulders. Layla’s firm side is more like a medium-firm, good for back sleepers and average-weight side sleepers. The soft side of the mattress is a great stand-alone bed in its own right: In fact, it ranks on our comprehensive list of the best soft mattresses.
If you’re a combination sleeper who moves around often during the night, or if you simply don’t want to feel stifled in your mattress, the firmer side could be for you. If you love the comforting hug of an all-foam bed, the softer side will be ideal.
What Does the Layla Mattress Feel Like?
Like many facets of this mattress’s performance, the bed’s feel changes between the soft and firm sides of the bed. The softer side offers more of a hugging, traditional memory foam sensation as you lie down, while the firmer side gives more responsiveness and bounce thanks to its higher-density foam. If you are looking to sink into the soft, comfort layer of your mattress, check out the best memory foam mattresses.
What Sleeping Position is the Layla Mattress Best for?
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 4 | 5 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 4 | 3 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 2 | 2 | 3 |
1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent
Back Sleepers
We don’t recommend the softer side of the mattress for back sleepers because proper firmness and support are required to keep the spine aligned, but the firm side of the mattress may give enough support for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers, ensuring proper spinal alignment and helping to ease back pain.
Still, the bed is not ideal for heavyweight back sleepers because of the mattress’s all-foam construction. Even the “firm” side of this mattress is more of a medium-firm feel and might not give enough support for heavyweight back sleepers.
If you are worried about waking up in pain, check out the best mattresses for back sleepers.
Side Sleepers
Each individual’s sleeping preferences are different, but side sleepers should look for beds that cradle pressure points like the hips and shoulders, the best kind is a mattress for hip pain. If a bed is too firm, it may put too much pressure on a side sleeper’s joints.
This mattress truly shines when it comes to accommodating side sleepers. We recommend the softer side of the bed for lightweight and average-weight sleepers. Heavyweight side sleepers should get a similar feel on the firm side. The soft side of the Layla mattress could offer enough pressure relief to help those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
For other pressure relieving mattresses, check out the best mattress for side sleepers.
Stomach Sleepers
Lightweight stomach sleepers should find enough support on the Layla, but we recommend that stomach sleepers use the firm side to offer maximum support and keep the neck, hips, and spine aligned. Some average-weight and heavyweight stomach sleepers might experience sinking in the hips on this bed, even on the more supportive firm side.
For other supportive mattresses, check out the best mattress for stomach sleepers.
Combination Sleepers
Combination sleepers (our word for sleepers who change position throughout the night) need a responsive bed that allows for easy movement and position changes. If you are an average-weight or a lightweight sleeper, this mattress should feel easy to move around on and relatively responsive, especially on the firmer side of the bed.
Still, some heavyweight sleepers have reported feeling stuck in the Layla mattress. If you need to change positions frequently and do not want to feel stuck in your mattress layers, check out the best mattress for combination sleepers.
Layla Mattress Performance
Is the Layla Mattress Cooling?
Though all-foam mattresses have amassed a bad reputation for heat retention and for making people feel stifled or trapped in bed, Layla includes several advanced cooling measures to keep hot sleepers comfortable throughout the night.
Thermo-Gel cooling technology in the cover helps the bed feel cool to the touch, and Layla says the bed’s cooling capabilities are activated by a change in body temperature. What’s more, the comfort layer for each firmness level features copper-infused foam that’s antimicrobial and helps with cooling.
While the Layla is an all-foam bed, we think it will be great for those who sleep temperature-neutral or mildly hot. If you sleep like a furnace at night, it might be best to choose an innerspring or hybrid mattress with breathable coils or some of the best cooling mattresses available.
Edge Support
Our team found that the Layla’s edge support, or strength of the mattress around its perimeter, is decent for an all-foam bed. During testing, we noticed that the Layla’s edges will depress a little when you sit right on the edge of the mattress with your legs hanging over the side.
Still, unless you are a heavyweight sleeper, you should be able to use the full surface of the mattress without feeling like you’re about to fall off. Even when we lie right along the edge of the bed, nobody on our team felt like they were at risk of sliding off the Layla. To make the most of your entire mattress surface, check out the best queen size mattresses and the best mattresses for sex.
Responsiveness
You sink pretty deep into the soft side of the Layla, and the memory foam has a slower response time. That means the soft side doesn’t allow for great mobility across the mattress surface. The firm side doesn’t have as much sink, so it’s a bit easier to move around on, but the memory foam still has a delayed response to change.
Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?
If you wake up easily from a partner’s late-night tossing and turning, motion isolation could be a top concern. Because the Layla is an all-foam bed, it earns generally high marks for motion isolation, or the ability to trap movement on one side of the bed. In fact, the bed made our list of the best mattresses for couples.
The soft side of the Layla shows just slight motion transfer from one sleep partner to another, especially when a sleeper gets out of bed or adjusts their sleep position. Still, this level of motion transfer isn’t enough to disturb a co-sleeper or to force them out of deep sleep.
Noise
As an all-foam bed, the Layla stays very quiet.
Pain Relief
If you suffer from back pain in the morning, your mattress could be the problem. Luckily, Layla does a good job of helping prevent this. When we looked at our pressure relief map, we saw great results for back sleepers on both the soft and firm sides: no pressure in sight.
Side sleepers need to have straight spines as they sleep to prevent back pain. The softer side of Layla showed spinal alignment, so lightweight and average-weight side sleepers should wake with any undue lower back pain. For more options like Layla, see our list of the best mattresses for back pain.
Sex
The Layla isn’t the best mattress for sex because it’s not very responsive to movement, it doesn’t have the bounce of springs, and can retain some heat.
Off-Gassing
We did notice a new mattress odor—called off-gassing—when we removed our Layla from its packaging, but it was gone after 24 hours. The smell is non-toxic, but if it bothers you, keep your sheets off the bed and ventilate your bedroom until the odor is gone.
Durability
Layla uses a high-density foam core to keep your body supported across the mattress. While this works well for lightweight and average-weight people, heavyweight sleepers won’t see as much support or durability from Layla.
Layla Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?
The Layla mattress is flippable and comes with a color-coded cover that provides visual cues for which side is which. Below, we’ve broken down how the mattress is built as if you’re looking at a cross-section, with the soft side on top.
Layer #1—Cooling Cover: The Thermo-Gel technology in the cover of the bed reacts to your body temperature and gives sleepers a soft, cool feel. It’s also removable and washable.
Layer #2—Copper-Gel Memory Foam: Sleepers will feel like they’re sleeping “in” the Layla’s soft side rather than “on” it with this contouring 3” top layer of foam. The brand added a cooling copper infusion to counteract the traditional overheating of memory foam. When we unzipped the Layla’s cover and took a look at the mattress layers in our lab, we could easily see the shiny copper flecks in this foam level.
Layer #3—Transitional Support Foam: This 2” support layer of polyfoam is designed to add a bit more responsiveness and bounce to the memory foam layer above it. The foam has been cut into a surface-level design to help with breathability.
Layer #4—Support Core Base Foam: The support core foam is 4” tall and adds to the stability and durability of the flippable mattress. According to the brand, the extra-thick layer helps with motion transfer and prevents sinkage.
Layer #5—Copper-Gel Memory Foam: Don’t worry—you’re not seeing double. The Layla uses an identical layer of copper-gel memory foam in the firm layer of the bed, except this second layer is just 1” thick. This thinner layer keeps the body closer to the firm support core, meaning that you’ll get more bounce and responsiveness from the firm side than the softer side.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?
Shipping & Unboxing
Layla ships for free to all of the 48 lower states and doesn’t charge shoppers for shipping if they return a mattress within the 120-day trial period window. You can expect your mattress to arrive in four to seven business days. Anyone from Hawaii, Alaska, or Canada wanting to buy a Layla product should call the company to discuss delivery options, but keep in mind that Layla might ask you to hand over $100 if you want to ship to these areas.
Shoppers can expect the new mattress to come compressed and rolled in a box, and ready for unboxing as soon as it arrives. It took us two minutes and 14 seconds to completely unbox Layla.
We experienced a chemical-like, off-gassing smell when we rolled the bed free of its plastic wrapping; however, it was pretty minimal. The smell isn’t indicative of a defect, isn’t harmful, and is almost guaranteed to dissipate within a day or so. If it bothers your nose, you can open a window and get some indoor fans whirring to help disperse the scent faster.
Layla Mattress Warranty Policy
What the Warranty DOES Cover
Layla offers a limited Lifetime warranty to the original buyer as long as they have followed the terms of the warranty: for instance, if they haven’t abused the mattress and have used a firm, rigid, and smooth surface to support it. The warranty covers indentations of greater than one inch, loss of mattress height or shape, seams that are coming apart, splitting or cracking of the foam, and issues that result from a manufacturing problem.
What the Layla Warranty DOESN’T Cover
The Layla mattress warranty doesn’t cover off-gassing smells. Fortunately, the scent is temporary, and because Layla uses high-quality CertiPUR-US certified foams, you don’t need to worry about this odor being harmful. Layla mattress warranty also doesn’t cover changes in firmness level, improper flipping that causes tears, poor edge support, or personal discomfort.
What Can Void the Layla Warranty
Keep in mind that customers will void the warranty if the mattress is stained, abused, or infested with bugs. To make sure you can take advantage of the warranty and don’t void it, we suggest getting a mattress topper or mattress protector. The Layla Mattress Topper would be a compliment to your new mattress.
You’ll also void the warranty if you don’t take the mattress out of the box within two weeks, damage the mattress by not unboxing carefully, or if you’re using a weak box spring or any bed frame with weak center support. Layla sells both a foundation and a bed frame on their website if you need new ones.
How to File A Claim
If you need to file a Warranty Claim with Layla you can call Layla Customer Support at 855-385-1676 and that option is available daily from 9 a.m.–5 p.m PST. Another option that is available is to Email an explanation of your claim and any photographs of the damage to support@laylasleep.com. You will likely need to include your purchase receipt, personal identification, and a written explanation of the claim, in addition to the photographic evidence.
Trial Period & Returns
Layla’s 120-night sleep trial allows you to test the mattress for about four months. If you don’t like the mattress, you can return it for a full refund anytime after two weeks and before the four months are up, which is according to the Layla Return Policy.
Why the two-week waiting period? The body typically takes up to 30 days to adjust to a new mattress, so it’s best to wait at least two weeks to make sure your body has become acclimated to a new bed. Layla will pick it up and donate the returned mattress to a charity if you decide to return the mattress.
Addressing Layla Mattress Complaints
- Lack of Responsiveness: On the soft side of the mattress, combination sleepers might have trouble changing sleep positions.
- Tends to Sleep Hot: People who often wake up sweaty might not appreciate the ensconcing foam layers of the Layla.
- Not Great for Heavyweight Sleepers: As a rule, heavyweight sleepers are best suited by a hybrid mattress with coils, not an all-foam bed.

Layla Mattress Frequently Asked Questions
Is Layla a good mattress?
Like true, unbiased mattress reviewers, we say it depends. Layla is a good mattress if you sleep with a partner or are unsure of what firmness level you enjoy or need. Layla may not be a good mattress for you if you sleep extremely hot.
How long does the Layla mattress last?
Like most all-foam mattresses, Layla should last you anywhere from five to seven years. But remember: Layla is a flippable mattress, so you may be able to get more life out of your bed by flipping it once one side wears down. Be sure to rotate it regularly.
Is the Layla mattress toxic?
No, it is not toxic. You're probably wondering about the off-gassing smell Layla emits when you unbox the bed. This is completely normal when foam is vacuum-packed. Let your bed air out for a few hours to days, and you should be just fine.
The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?
With Layla, you get two mattresses in one: It’s perfect for modern shoppers who want a great mattress with a little flexibility. You may be unsure whether a softer or a firmer mattress is what you are looking for, or you may know you’ll only use the bed for a few years before passing it on to a sibling or a friend.
Either way, the Layla offers flexibility and a high-quality mattress for a relatively low price. Though the memory foam mattress might not work perfectly for larger people or those who sleep as hot as furnaces, it’ll be great for back sleepers and anyone who wants a flexible, modern mattress.
