Best Types of Mattresses for Allergies

The type of mattress you choose will not only affect your level of comfort and support, but whether the materials inside may affect your allergies. In this section, I’ll go over common types of mattresses and if they’re a good investment for folks that are sensitive to allergens.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses are entirely made of foam—from the comfort layers to the support layers. All-foam mattresses are great for those who sleep with a partner because motion doesn’t easily travel across the mattress; they also help relieve pressure for those with aches and pains. Since these beds tend to be pretty dense, they don’t often hold on to allergens, such as dust mites, but they aren’t completely resistant, so we suggest a mattress protector.

Memory foam beds are also a good alternative for those with a latex allergy. We recommend finding a memory foam bed with copper infusions or a hypoallergenic cover to be extra safe.

Latex

Mattresses may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of latex, but latex beds are the perfect option for folks with common allergies and are the only beds that can be 100 percent natural and organic. Latex foam is made from the sap of rubber trees, creating a material that is naturally cooling, pressure relieving—and more importantly—resistant to dust mites, mold, and other common allergens.

Buyer beware: Mattresses made with synthetic latex foam are not hypoallergenic as they don’t contain the same properties as naturally derived latex foam. Synthetic latex is cheaper, but you don’t reap all of the benefits.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses typically combine a foam comfort layer and a pocketed coil support core to create a “best of both worlds” mattress—the bounce and support of an innerspring bed with the motion isolating and pressure relieving properties of foam.

When it comes to people with allergies, we recommend going with a latex hybrid bed over a memory foam hybrid due to the naturally hypoallergenic properties. Hybrid mattresses also tend to have covers treated with antimicrobials and are usually built to resist the buildup of mold, mildew, and moisture in the coil layer.

Innerspring

Think about the mattress you slept on growing up, it more than likely was an innerspring bed. These mattresses are less common today and use thin comfort layers over a bed of interconnected, open coils. Innerspring mattresses are not going to be best for allergies: The comfort layers commonly used in innerspring mattresses can be a home for dust mites.

Look for Certifications

Any brand can claim their mattress is hypoallergenic, but the best way to tell is to check for official certifications. These organizations independently test mattress materials for harmful chemicals, sustainable sourcing, and to make sure they’re actually organic when they claim to be.

• CertiPUR-US: This organization rigorously tests foams in mattresses for harmful emissions and chemicals that can be hazardous for your health. 
• OEKO-TEX Standard 100: OEKO-TEX checks for harmful chemicals in textiles. For beds, that would include the fabric and stitching on your mattress cover.
• GOTS: The Global Organic Textile Standard ensures a brand is using organically sourced fibers and that it meets other ecological criteria.
• GOLS: The Global Organic Latex Standard is a certification to check for if you want to ensure that the organic mattress you’re eyeing is truly made with organic latex foam rather than a synthetic alternative.
• Eco-INSTITUT: The Eco-INSTITUT has a more rigorous standard for emissions testing—essentially making sure the mattress was tested against pollutants.
• Greenguard Gold: The goal of a Greenguard Gold certification is for a brand to have their products tested for low emissions, contributing to cleaner air.

Price

Here at Mattress Nerd, we’ve tested and reviewed hundreds of mattresses, and we’ve found that most Queen-sized beds range anywhere from $500 to $3,500 dollars. We consider anything $500 or below to be a cheap mattress, $1,000 or below to be an affordable mattress, and anything over $2,000 to be a luxury buy.

Many quality, hypoallergenic mattresses fall between $1,000 and $2,000 for a Queen, so you can expect to pay about that much. That doesn’t mean there aren’t exceptions, like the DreamFoam Latex, which falls under $1,000 for a Queen.

Pillows

You’ll have a few more options when it comes to sheets. Bamboo and silk sheets are naturally dust mite resistant, but must be laundered delicately. Cotton and tencel sheets are breathable and moisture-wicking, giving bacteria less of a chance to make a home there. Here are my recommendations.

Keeping your mattress allergen-free is only the first step to sleeping with allergies. If your symptoms make it difficult to sleep, here are some other tips to help.

• Close your bedroom window: The best way to prevent allergy flare ups is to prevent allergens from entering the bedroom. This is especially important if you have a pollen or cockroach allergy.
• Use an air filter: Along those lines, using an air filter helps keep you from breathing in those allergens.
• Wash your bedding frequently: Just because your mattress is hypoallergenic, doesn’t mean your bedding is. We suggest washing your sheets weekly to get rid of dead skin cells that may build up throughout the week.
• Talk to your doctor: At the end of the day, the best person to consult about your allergies is your doctor. If your symptoms are hindering your sleep, consult with your doctor to get medicine that should help.
