TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid vs. Sealy Cocoon: Firmness & Feel Differences
Here’s how TEMPUR-Cloud and Sealy Cocoon Chill fare against each other in terms of firmness and feel.
What’s the Firmness Of the TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid & Sealy Cocoon Mattresses?
When choosing a mattress, one of the first things you should consider is mattress firmness. Choosing the right firmness level that can support and accommodate your sleeping position and body type will have a big impact on the quality of your sleep.
At Mattress Nerd, we measure mattress firmness using a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. That said, we gave the TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid a medium-firm rating or a 6/10, while the Cocoon Chill got a 5/10 or a medium-soft.
What Do the TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid & Sealy Cocoon Mattresses Feel Like?
The TEMPUR-Cloud is a true hybrid mattress, which means that it does a great job of balancing that classic memory foam feel and the springy and bouncy feel that comes from a coil layer. It feels soft and hugging when you first lie down on it, but you quickly feel the lift and support from the coil system beneath. It’s also very cool to the touch and doesn’t trap heat as much as other mattresses.
As for the Sealy Cocoon mattress, it feels soft and doughy to lie down on. It has a more hugging feel compared to the TEMPUR-Cloud, and there’s not much bounce to it. We feel that memory foam lovers who love that traditional hugging feel will love how the Cocoon mattress feels.
What’s It Like to Sleep On the TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid & Sealy Cocoon Mattresses?
As a medium-firm mattress, the TEMPUR-Cloud can accommodate a wide variety of sleeping positions. That said, we feel that this mattress will better accommodate average-weight sleepers compared to the Cocoon mattress, which is more suited to lightweight sleepers. In terms of sleeping positions, the softer Cocoon is a better match for side sleepers who need extra cushion for their sides, while the firmer and bouncy TEMPUR-Cloud will be better for back and combination sleepers.
The TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid vs. Sealy Cocoon Mattresses By Body Type
TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 4 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 5 | 4 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 5 | 3 | 4 |
Cocoon Chill Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 3 | 5 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 4 | 2 | 5 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 3 | 1 | 3 |
1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent
Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 lbs)
Average-weight back sleepers will probably feel more comfortable on the TEMPUR-Cloud than the Cocoon Chill, since some may feel like the latter feels too soft on their back. The same can be said for stomach sleepers – the Sealy Cocoon is too soft to provide enough support for their hips or keep their spine aligned.
On the other hand, side sleepers will sleep better on the softer Cocoon Chill as the TEMPUR-Cloud may feel too firm on their shoulders and hips. Combination sleepers who need a responsive mattress will probably be better off with the hybrid TEMPUR-Cloud vs the Sealy Cocoon.
Heavyweight Sleepers (> 230 lbs)
Heavyweight sleepers of all sleeping positions are better off with the TEMPUR-Cloud mattress and its sturdy coil base. The Sealy Cocoon Chill’s hugging foam layers are too soft to support heavyweight sleepers who will likely feel that they sink too much into the mattress. However, some folks will probably still feel like they need a firmer and more supportive mattress. For that, we recommend taking a look at our list of the best mattresses for heavy people.
Lightweight Sleepers (< 130 lbs)
Both mattresses can support lightweight back sleepers easily, so it depends more on your preferences. The same goes for combination sleepers. If you want a bouncy and firmer mattress, go for the TEMPUR-Cloud, but if you want a softer and hugging mattress, choose the Cocoon Chill.
Lightweight side sleepers will probably be more comfortable on the Sealy Cocoon’s soft foam layers, while stomach sleepers will want the firmer TEMPUR-Cloud for their hips.
Differences In Mattress Construction
The TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid is a 10” hybrid mattress, while the Cocoon Chill is a 10” all-foam mattress. Let’s take a closer look at how the TEMPUR-Cloud and Cocoon Chill mattresses differ in terms of mattress construction.

The TEMPUR-Cloud’s comfort system is made from soft memory foam that excels at pressure relief and closely contours the body. Cocoon’s Perfect Fit Memory Foam also does a great job of adapting to your body’s curves to provide pressure relief.

TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid vs. Sealy Cocoon Mattress Performance Ratings & Differences
Temperature
When it comes to cooling, hybrid mattresses usually have the upper hand over other mattress types, and this seems to be the case for the TEMPUR-Cloud and Cocoon Chill mattresses.
Based on our testing, the TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid excels because of its coil layer, which facilitates better breathability and ventilation than the Cocoon. However, we have to give credit to Cocoon Chill for being able to keep a temperature-neutral feel despite being an all-foam mattress, thanks to the Phase Change Material technology in its cover.
Motion Transfer
Usually, foam mattresses have better motion isolation compared to hybrid mattresses. But we were surprised to see that this was the opposite in this case.
The TEMPUR-Cloud scored very well in terms of motion isolation. We had two people lie down on the mattress and move around. According to them, they felt little to no movement from the other side, which means that the TEMPUR-Cloud has low motion transfer. Unfortunately, the Cocoon Chill scored low in this category since our testers easily felt the others’ movement, which means that this mattress is probably a bad choice for couples and co-sleepers.
Edge Support
A mattress with good edge support allows you to maximize the perimeter of your mattress and makes it easy for you to get in and out of bed. This is an important factor to consider, especially for couples and seniors.
Between the two mattresses, the TEMPUR-Cloud got a better score. However, we still feel that its edge support is at an okay level. We felt some sagging when we lay down on its sides, and it became more noticeable when we sat on the edges. On the other hand, we rated the Cocoon Chill’s edge support as less than ideal, since the sagging was more noticeable on it.
Pressure Relief
Overall, both mattresses provide great pressure relief. The TEMPUR-Cloud’s memory foam layers do a fantastic job of contouring the body and cushioning the body’s pressure points. However, sleepers weighing over 230 lbs may feel like they sink in too much, which prevents them from getting enough pressure relief to feel comfortable.
The Cocoon Chill’s comfort layers closely contour the body’s natural curves and promote a healthy neutral spine alignment. However, we feel like it’s better suited to lightweight sleepers than average-weight sleepers, especially when compared to TEMPUR-Cloud.
Pain Relief
If you’re suffering from body pain and aches, you’ll want a mattress that offers you excellent pain relief to prevent the pain from getting worse.
For those with back pain, we think the TEMPUR-Cloud’s medium-firm foam layers and coil support system are a great match, especially if you weigh 230 lbs or lower. But for those who sleep on their side and experience shoulder or hip pain, the Cocoon Chill’s softer and hugging memory foam layers can provide great pain relief for lightweight sleepers and some average-weight sleepers. Heavyweight sleepers will likely sink too far into the mattress, which may have the opposite effect and exacerbate the pain.
Durability
Like most hybrid mattresses, you can expect your TEMPUR-Cloud mattress to last you around seven to 10 years with proper care and maintenance. All-foam mattresses like the Sealy Cocoon have shorter lifespans, so expect it to last you around six to eight years. Fortunately, both mattress brands offer 10-year warranties.

Our Final Take
The TEMPUR-Cloud and Sealy Cocoon Chill mattresses are great mattress options in general, but they’re better suited to specific types of sleepers.
If you’re a side sleeper or someone who likes the closely hugging feel of traditional memory foam, you’ll want to get the Sealy Cocoon Chill. It’s also a great match for lightweight sleepers looking for pressure or pain relief on their hips and shoulders. But if you’re an average-weight sleeper who wants a cooling mattress, the TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid mattress should be your pick. It’s also an excellent choice for people dealing with back pain.
